Where do you put your helmet ? (ooer!)
« on: 24 May 2013, 10:45:16 am »
I noticed in a recent pic (and elsewhere) people put their prized crash helmets on seats, mirrors, etc.

Having lost a custom painted (motor racing) helmet to the tarmac after it blew off the boot of the car I have always tried to stick to - "If it's not on my head it's on the floor" - on the basis that it is difficult for it to fall off the floor.

Any views ?

Yer not wrong.

See also pillion footpegs.
Less distance to fall if it does go.

Bar ends. Although they fall off very easy from there.

Mirrors are fine, as long as the gloves aren't in the hat, then it takes a mighty wind to knock it off. Floor is fine. Prolly best kept on the head tho. I find this especially helpful whilst in areas of financial transactioneering

Yip, panoramic, but only when not wearing it.

Floor most of the time but sometimes on mirrors

Seen my prize helmet bounce across the floor once, it goes on the mirror now, it takes some effort to knock ot off there. Either on there, or on my head. If in doubt, carry it. :))

Always always on the floor after listening to others & before i learnt any bad habits,

At the petrol station i put it on top of the pump casing, not the cleanest place but then the padding is washable & a bit o dirts still better than a ruined helmet.

usually on the floor (on top of the palms of the gloves)

occasionally on the wing mirror when me backs playing up and cant reach the ground.

That works, till it's windy - I've seen helmets (fortunately not mine!) blown off the top of pumps, and they roll a hell of a long way!

Always on the floor for me, usually on top of my gloves.
I always fill up straddling the bike with helmet on, then dismount, helmet off and go into pay, never had a problem. You wait thats put the curse on it. :lol

On my head or on the floor.

At petrol stations it's on my head, if they don't like it I shop elsewhere.

When im riding its on me head when parked for a short time like at a petrol station then on me right hand mirror, if parked up for awhile like a bike meet then its locked to my left hand pillion footpeg.

On the rare occasion it isn't on my head or in the cupboard at home, it will be hooked over the mirror (mirror through where the visor goes) or wedged between the bars and the clocks on the tank. The latter only happens when I am with the bike though.

I would never put my helmet on top of a petrol pump or on the floor in a petrol station as the petrol that does accumulate there would do it some damage. with family that run garages I know these pumps are not as clean as they look!

They've started to refuse service at petrol stations around the Preston area now if you wear a helmet, apparently they've been getting a few ride off bilkings, but Its utter bullshit!
They've also said its for health and safety reasons, yet again, utter bullshit! I refuse to take my helmet off at fuel stations because there's nowhere to put it, and apparently any fuel that touches your lid degrade the helmet materials.
I've asked the cashier to come and hold my helmet before now, but she wasn't impressed!

Mirrors are fine, as long as the gloves aren't in the hat,

Please don't do this. I sent one of my Arai Astros to Arai for inspection after I accidently biffed it into a revolving door and the helmet came back with a letter telling me not to use the helmet ever again as it had 'sustained lining damage presumed to be from hanging on a m/c mirror' I rang them up at Phoenix to find out more and they said that this was a very common way of damaging a lid, it doesn't take much force for the side of the mirror to slice into the polystyrene liner. £450 of helmet written off.
I always put mine on the ground if possible or if it's raining I lock it into the helmet holder on the seat catch.

On the floor, on top of my gloves, or if I'm parked up and it's a nice day I hang it on the hook under the seat.  In the garage it sits on its own little shelf, with carpet stuck to the brick work so it doesn't scratch.
Money doesn't buy happiness, but it buys beer, and that helps!

Is it really that much hassle to take off your helmet to go and pay for some fuel?

I always take it off and carry it with me when going into pay - just ask the cashier next time how many times they have been robbed at knife point by someone wearing a motorbike helmet and see their response.

I'd hate to be in that position where you are scared shitless every person walking in with a lid on might pull something on you.

And for that reason...

Yeah, round here it doesn't happen bud, hence why its bullshit. I take my gloves off, and walk in to pay for my fuel with my wallet in my hand, and quite often my chip-n-pin card in my other hand, its obvious I'm no threat. Body language is about 70% of communication.

I never take my helmet off when filling up for fuel but that's because its a pain in the ass to deal with getting my glasses off and back on again with a full face helmet. When I'm wearing my contacts, its soooo much easier that its no hassle at all - I just rarely wear my contacts :(

Don't want to hijack this thread off the original topic but IMO yes, it's too much hassle to take it off when filling up.

I don't make any fuss any more, I just get back on and go elsewhere, but most of the time I use Tesco as they have 'pay at pump' facilities and everyone's happy.

I usually put mine on the mirrors or on the ground at the rear wheel if dry. After reading Simon.p's post I will be looking carefully at where my helmet is put. Food for thought.

My son kept getting asked to take his off, even with the front flipped open. He used to ask them why, and they just told him "no helmets" but didn't explain why.
And they wonder why bikers boycott petrol stations!

It's a security thing. A helmet is similar to wearing a balaclava (in so far as it covers most of your face) so you can't be identified by cctv.

They're not saying every biker is a criminal out to rob the place but it limits risk to put that rule in place.

It takes 30 seconds to take your lid off, you would spend more than that arguing it with the staff if you really wanted to keep it on.

I don't see the hate for it to be honest.
