Tamiya 1:10 Radio Control Cars
« on: 09 March 2013, 12:48:37 am »
Anyone else into these?
I was 17/18 years ago, bought a TA-02 Chassis with a Repsol Escort Cosworth shell, but then I lost interest!! Then, a couple of weeks ago, on FaceBook, in one of them "for sale groups, a lady advertised a built but unused TL-01 chassis with Alfa Romeo shell, boxed, I got it for a song. My 12 year old stepson, who is Autistic, showed an interest, which is rare for the lad, so a love affair has been rekindled lol I feel like I'm 17 again. Anyone else into these RC rockets?

Yes I have a few of them. They are 1:10 Nitro cars by Tenth Tech. One is set up for track and the other for off road. Not run them for a couple of years though.

I did have a Tamiya once but prefered the smell and the noise of the petrol cars.  :lol

I'm loving it, just stripped both down, cleaned and regreased all the gears and ball raced throughout (Aint ball race bearings cheaper than they used to be, did both cars for £20 using ABEC9 rated bearings  :)  ) Also fitted a ESC and 15T motor to the TL-01. Wear & Tear & Storage has taken its toll on the TA-02 so just searching the net for a few parts and awaiting delivery of the new radio gear.

My other half has a Nitro 4WD (Although with a shaft missing to the front wheels, so just 2WD) that I have no idea about, Ive looked around the net and think (but probably wrong lol) HPI RS4 with a Dodge Viper Shell. My other halfs Dad gave it to her a few years ago when she was with her ex, but from what I can see, her ex took some bits like the glowplug starter, so at the mo, its sitting in a box awaiting attention!!!

The best thing about this is at the moment, it gives me and my step-son something to do together, and from there, if he keeps interest and is pretty good, then I may see if he wants to attend a club. The downside of Autism is he has very little social skills, and introducing him him to new people, can be hard on him, very tiring, which is a crying shame, because once you get to know him, he is a smashing kid who will do anything that he can to help regardless if there is a reward or not. Love him to bits, and wouldnt change him, so this is a positive step forward at the moment.

I do like the look of that Snapper, Ill post picture's when I figure out how lol

Looking forward to hearing how it goes mate, good to have common interest with the step kids, makes things so much easier. My stepdaughter has some autistic tendencies socially and with her communication but like u say, she is a great kid behind that. Good luck with it

I love nitro monster trucks. Hard wearing, fast and don't need a battery charger.

Here's my two. Last time I got them out my daughter was a bit weary of them  but have since taken her to Crystal Palace to see a few races. I think next time I run them she'll be ckucking to crash them.
 :lol

They've both got two speed gear boxes and were pretty competitive last time I raced them some ten years ago, except I was the weakest link. Probably better if I stuck to racing karts.

The Vauxhall Calibri runs with propper belted tyres and has more of a race tuned engine. Also ball race bearings throughout.

Good luck with your project Fazerboy and hope your step-son takes to it like a duck to water.

Cheers for the well wishes, I appreciate that.
I'm just a sucker for Cossies lol she does look awesome. RC Racing at Crystal Palace, gonna have to look this up, sounds like a fun day (well to me anyway)
I think we all have Autistic tendencies slightly (Not that Im trying to take anything away from your stepdaughter Jazz999 or my stepson by any means) I mean, on here, I can type the hind legs of a dingbat, having never met any of you personally, but if we were sat in a pub/cafe around a table, I'd be the the one who said very little, listening for an "in" where I can say something witty or relevent, BUT cock it up and just look a knob lol that is untill I have met you a few times then I can be comfortable at being part of the group, have always been the same.
To be fair, He has taught me a lot about myself, helped me understand things I thought I never would or would need to, be more tollerent of those with mental health issues and helped me find a little bit more of my patience (OK well a lot!!!) and the best part, he doesnt know that he has, he has by being him, massive respect to the lad, he faces a struggle in life but with his Mum and his Dad, I'll be by his side fighting his corner as and when he needs it.
Right, back on topic, RC cars are more complex and tuneable than the hubble telescope these days, geez how things have changed since I bought my first many moons ago lol

Hera ya go...
A few links for you.

You used to be able to use the track on non race days but now the club lock scaffold bars accross verious parts of the track to stop you using it. It's also now fenced off.

Ho hum.  :rolleyes

HPI Baja 5b ss at London Radio Car Club, crystal palace 12

Crystal Palace RC

There's also indoor racing to consider if you have electric car. "Carpet Wars" A mate of mine still races in this series and is very competitive.

Isn't the baja a 1/5 petrol? That is pretty damn mad.

It makes the track look small. I always fancied a marder truck myself.

I must say that i've never really thought about getting one of these although maybe some time in the future I'll get one, funds allowing etc, they look like a riot.

On the side note of this thread I am so happy to hear you have found something that you and your stepson connect over, I truly hope it helps you become closer. I have worked with children with Autism for over 5 years and they are some of the most genuine people I've ever met, they certainly teach us a thing or two about ourselves! You are right in what you say about us all having a few tendencies here and there and it's interesting to see because you never really notice until you've been trying to understand others.

Anyway, all the best with the cars and the relationships!  8)

It wouldn't be fun if it was easy, I just wish it wasn't this much fun.

To add a new dimension to it you can now get drift tyres. In the grounds of Snetterton race track there is a huge model and toy shop and the last time i was there they had a round of the UK drift championships. was awesome to watch.
This vid isn't the same time I was there but gives you an idea.

Lord,
Grant me the WD-40 to move those things that are stuck, the Duck tape to fasten those things that are loose, And the wisdom to know the difference.

I was into TC a few years ago, tried the 1/10th cars and then moved onto 1/8th buggys. It cost me a fortune keeping it running and all the hop ups! Eventually sold it but now i'm waiting for my son to take an interest then I can go and buy another one!!
