Tape to fix fairings
« on: 31 July 2017, 06:24:08 pm »
Hi Guys, just exploring options re my bike and broken fairing my first quote to weld and respray was £400 so looking like 2 options, sell bike as is or bodge it.

Does anyone know if there is a clear tape out there that I could stick over the painted side of the break to protect the cracked paint?  All the paint is on the fairing, I've not lost any of the paint it's just blown along one crack and split and lifted on another crack.  I'm wondering if I can epoxy the inside of the fairing where it's not overly seen and then put some sort of clear, waterproof etc tape over the paint to stop it lifting any more.

Ideas.......... has anyone tried this kind of option?

Sounds like you're having a shit time of it Harry....advice of the nog...sorn it, store it, wait til you have some dosh and in the meantime keep your eyes peeled on here for when the cheap bits come up...

Getting out on the bike in situations like these may be the thing needed to clear your head.......but having it looming over you might be more of a hindrance under the circumstances.......but you'll feel good that you still have a bike for when things get better..

Also something tells me yours is a red boxeye.....might be wrong though....but if its a foxeye theres a couple of front fairings on ebay for £120

This bloke http://www.boyztoyzunlimited.co.uk/ did me a good cheap repair on my bellypan,  sanded down. I then primed, sprayed and glossed. Might be worth a ring. Also there's a Honda red car paint from Halfords which is very close to VRC1  :)

I've just had a second quote (based on photos only) of £180 including respraying.  That's doable, but not yet. I think I may well SORN the bike, cancel insurance and start saving.  :)

I guess if I bodged it using that plastech plastic repair kit and some Honda paint (cheers for the advice guys) I would be making it worse for the chap when it comes to repairing?  I can't ride the bike as it is because I don't want to make the cracks worse.

I saw something on you tube how to weld fairings and other plastic bits tried it myself on side panels using a soldering iron , cable ties as a filler welding rod, and metal paper staples as reinforcement to give strength to the welded crack. they were still good when I sold it a year later.
It's worth watching the you tube clip

No point in cancelling the insurance, you will get fec all back from them. Keep the insurance going till renewal time but just SORN the bike and put it away in the garage till you can get it repaired.

alternatively, get some gaffer tape and continue riding it for now.

What about fibreglass? You can get some cheap polyester resin and tape from Cornwall Fibreglass Supplies. Fibreglass on the inside of the fairing, fill the outside with Plastic Padding and paint it. It'd do for a while until you can sort it properly.

Hi Bobby, the insurance is due in 6 days so I wasn't going to cancel, just not renew right now.

ah, ha, yes, deefer, good shout.  Although would need to post and that would needlessly increase the costs if I can find someone more local.

Errr, is there no genuine fairing left for you bike? Or is it some custom colour?

https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/4158528/fzs600-fazer-5dm1-1998-070-a/cowling-1
(deep redish cocktail red 1 - so double check your colour)

£173 + vat for genuine, painting box eye fairing from Fowlers . In Stock.
Won't include decals though.

oooooooo that's a similar price to the repair, and will look loads better, nice one Arthur.  :thumbup  I thought fairings were mega bucks (£300+).

I'll check my colour tonight.  I suspect it's F45T Red ;-)
