value clearance check at 25000
« on: 08 August 2021, 11:35:49 am »
Hi, the bike has reached 25000 and my question is do I really need to have the valves checked?
Money is a bit tight at the moment and I could do a small service my self,  but the valve check is way beyond me.How critical is it to do the check?
Can I wait till next year ( I am only doing less than1000 miles a year)The mechanic doing the job is unhelpful and non committal.I understand many will say it is important to follow Yamaha service schedules.
Just wanted to know what are peoples experience with the valve check and how many have had to do any adjustments.

If the bike's running smoothly and with the milage you're doing, I can see no reason why you couldn't leave it for at least another year.

When you get it looked at you'll probably find, like most of us, that nothing needs doing!

Hello. Everybody will have their own opinions on wether you should check the valve clearances or not.

At 25000 mine where all in specification, no adjustments required. I think most people get this result at that mileage. Other foccers will confirm if this is the case.

Waiting an extra 1000 miles before you check them in my opinion won’t be a problem.

Understandably your mechanic may be non commital, he hasn’t got a crystal  ball, he won’t want the comeback on him if anything should go wrong.

1000 miles more or less will not make much difference, but get them checked for peace of mind. I have seen some need reshiming at 25000 miles and some gone to 75000 to 100000 miles with out having to be reshimmed. My own 600 needed 5 shims changed at 50000 but was well within spec at 24000miles  and 75000miles, whereas my1000 needed 8 shims changed at 25000 and is due a check again probably by the end of this year
