Tick tick bloody tick....
« on: 20 September 2015, 07:39:08 pm »
Ok so ticking I had a few months ago garage advised was worn cam chain tensioner and to change it for a manual one. Ok.
They changed it for me but to be honest the ticking never stopped. ....
It's irritating me again, very noticeable around town riding, clearly coming from the tensioner area...
Anyone else changed the tensioner and still get the ticking??
Cheers.

I used to get a tick from my FZ1...at low speeds...like a speedo connector...or a cable tie flicking on the wheel........i remember a few of the FZ1 guys at the time saying that it was fairly common so i suppose normal.....it never affected anything.........funnily enough its only now that ive remembered as i dont think it had it for a while so i can only assume it was actually something to do with one of the systems that i modded, ais, air filter, k and n, pc5 who knows really....i wouldnt worry about it.
Easiest way to go fast........don't buy a blue bike

Short answer - no.  What's the year and mileage?

Worn EXUP bushes and loose EXUP cables can cause ticking sounds.  Locating noises is never a precise sport.

If you tighten the manual tensioner a touch, does the ticking go away ... maybe change to a whirring sound (which means too tight, BTW)?

I'd be taking it back to the garage that sold you a manual tensioner as a cure but seemingly didn't fit it right or didn't correctly diagnose the original fault.

Exup gone but cables still there... Not me and been meaning to remove them..
Not touched the tensioner since it was fitted, done 1k+ miles since it was fitted. Will speak to them next time i am there..

Apologies, I was thinking Gen 1 when I mentioned the EXUP.  The Gen 2 won't suffer the same problem so disregard.

I still think you should be taking it back to the dealer who fitted the tensioner first. :)

I had exactly the same ticking on mine which developed at a similar mileage.
It was due to an excessive valve clearance on the far right inlet valve, just next to the camchain  ;)
I set all the clearances to within spec & the ticking was no more.

Edit: On a general note, valve clearances can tick & worn chains rattle.
