K&N oil
« on: 04 December 2011, 10:06:51 am »
Just seen the thread about K&N filters - reminded me that I've got one in the garage, but it needs cleaning and re-oiling.

K&N want a zillion quid for the kit so not keen on buying it. Cleaning is easy - washing up liquid and warm water (even says so in the K&N instructions). But why about re-oiling. Any alternatives to their oil?

Bought my kit off ebay a few years ago. The oil lasts ages. I guess you can be confident that the K&N oil is the correct weight and spec for the purpose. And it's coloured red so you can see which areas of the filter have been sprayed.

Advice I got, was after cleaning the filter, don't spray with as much oil as you would find on a factory-fresh item.

How often are you supposed to clean and re-oil them ? I put one on ages ago.

they say 50,000 but you'd be mad to let it go that far without cleaning it. they're not really maintenance free they just last longer and can be reused. i'd say you should at least blow it out with compressed air every couple of months because crap does build up in them and that will obviously restrict the air flow through them.

Compressed air destroys this kind of filters

I clean mine every 4,500 - 5,000 miles, not sure on the effect on performance but they do get noticeably dirty and a clean won't do it any harm.

its basically a wire mesh and you're blowing the dust out of it with air. how does that destroy it?

They are wire and a fragile cotton tissue. K&N and BMC forbid compressed air in their user manual.

Compressed air is fine on K&N filters so long as you dont put the blow gun too close to the filter, As for service period I do mine at every other service, its a bit of an overkill but engines like to breath.

As for the oil any MX specialist will have a cheaper alternative to K&N's own oil but I always use the genuines stuff.
