General / London parking
« on: 09 January 2015, 12:01:29 am »

Hello everyone

Finally managed to land myself a job and back in the city - so the bike is back out of temporary retirement. Any recommendations for parking near the Gherkin? DOn't mind paying (if I must) but would prefer off street and the knowledge that I will find a spot every day.

A large contingent of fund raisers for the annual police-person's ball was spotted on the A316 this morning all around Richmond, and I did see a motorcyclist being asked for a contribution.[/size]No doubt other areas will be following suit shortly if they haven't already started, so take care out there.

General / MANDP tyre deals
« on: 29 October 2013, 10:50:09 am »

Arrived in my mailbox this morning valid today only

PR3s: £209.99 (pair)
Storm Ultra 2: £129.99 (pair)

Was keen to try PR3s based on all the positive reviews but have been happy with Storm Ultras so probably the way I'll go ...

Seems like a good deal either way

General / This has got to be wrong
« on: 11 October 2013, 11:37:43 pm »
Spotted on my way home today. Afraid I'm too new at video editing to obscure number plates etc (although tempted not to) so here's a partial frame.

In case there's any doubt, thats a rather terrified Spaniel puppy with its head sticking out of a hole cut in the top box. And yes it is Trafalgar Square at rush hour in the pi$$ing rain.

Picked up a loan Divvy this morning courtesy of last weeks SMIDSY driver's insurance. She initially tried the he appeared out of nowhere line but didn't have much choice about accepting liability when a witness pointed out I had been stationary at the time she executed her U-Turn :grumble :grumble :grumble  Fortunately minimal harm to me (bruised finger) and only damaged plastics and bent tank on the bike (not cheap mind you), so I have still been riding it.

They initially suggested a Bandit but I asked for something smaller and lighter so got the Divvy instead. Great chance to try a bike I could never own (at 6'4" I could never live with it long term). It looks just the thing for a city bike. Walking around the bike it still looked like just the thing. Did notice the swingarm looked to be rather on the budget side - and since there is no visible exhaust can I would probably have preferred a single sided swing arm.

First warning that I was going to be disappointed was when I sat on it and the seat dropped by 6 inches. Suddenly I felt like I was on a chopper with the front way too high, and I hadn't even started the bike yet. I also noticed how wide the bars were. Can't say for sure but they seemed wider than I remembered on my Gen 1 Thou. I have been really impressed at how narrow my own bike is and how little room is needed for filtering. The Diversion is much narrower and feels like half the weight but those bars meant I actually avoided gaps I would have sailed the slightly overweight Trumpet through.

On the road the motor was predictably good. Good fuelling with a better midrange than I expected, reasonable acceleration and more than enough for the empty motorway stretches. Not blinding performance by any means but if I had a city bike / winter hack I could live with it and still have fun on the weekends. Handling was predictably not great. As they say in the classics: Looks like a fish, moves like a fish, steers like a cow. Ok I'm probably heavier than their target market but the suspension was way more budget than it should have been. Definitely no temptation to test the cornering limits - maybe just as well as the rear tyre was brand new, they even stuck a note on the tank to warn me.

Major niggle as a taller rider was the length of travel on the gear lever. I was already cramped up and it was a real effort to get my foot down far enough between upshifts. The upright position meant that my top half didn't feel particularly cramped. Fairing, well its really just plastic covers and I wasn't expecting any protection. Felt like I was on a naked bike, which is fine for a city bike. Once I got into the city I really did appreciate the light weight and short wheelbase. This made it very maneuverable and flickable, but the bars are too wide to get the benefit in traffic. Oh and moving it around the car park was an absolute doddle.

Still think this could have been a great city bike - but they spoiled it by cutting too many corners.

First attempt with my new cam
Ride home from work

No Trackdays, no scenic country lanes and no exotic mountain passes - just the ride home from work.

Bugetish cam (Polaroid XS100) but I'm impressed. Shows it works in low light and stabilisation does work - mounted on the ram mount where my GPS normally goes. Some sequences are sped up before you accuse me of being a total nutter. Originally filmed in full HD but downscaled by Youtube.

No - haven't given up on the GT, in for its first service. Was offered this or a Daytona. Would have been a different choice if I were going to London today.

It's very ermmm ... big

For Sale & Wanted / FZS1000 Garage sale
« on: 08 June 2013, 05:55:07 pm »
Here is the full list of what's left in my garage. I'm not really into selling bits and pieces which will make hardly any money or wrapping and posting so most of this stuff won't be showing up on ebay.
Posting here as a thank you to all the foccers that helped me out over the years and because I remember how hard some of it was to find. And because I remember how much fun it was turning this great bike into my dream bike. Would prefer collection for the bulkier / heavier items. Options are:
  • Bracknell: Evenings and weekends
  • London (Blackfriars): Workdays - only if it will fit in my new top box or backpack.
  • Nottingham: Going there next weekend and you can either collect on the weekend or I can leave with my in-laws if you pay up front.
Not interested in haggling over prices (unless otherwise stated) so make me a reasonable offer for the stuff you want. Here's the list
  • Clear indicator lenses: Screw on replacements for the OE ones, condition as new, you will need orange bulbs - ideally chromed.
  • OE tail light cluster. Good condition, everything works including the bulbs.
  • Rentech grab rail. Bought new, used once
  • Quill titanium evo 2 can with link pipe and hanger and partial blue tint. Won't sell for less than £150 (plus P&P) as I will keep for new bike if it doesn't go. Approx 3 years old - no dents or scratches.
  • Nitron Race Shock. 3 way adjustable + height adjustable. Approx 6000 miles. Sprung for 17 stone rider. Won't accept less than £300 (plus P&P) - this will go on ebay.
  • OE rear seat cowl. Previous owner told me it was scratched and I found one on ebay before I saw it. Condition is reasonable, I personally wouldn't paint it unless I wanted a mint bike.
  • TCP solo seat cowl. Good condition but paint flaking at edges - personally I would paint it.
  • Kappa 52 litre top box + monokey mounting plate. Only one key - no leaks, condition fair (been in almost daily use for 6 years)
  • Givi top box mounting plate - the other type
  • Radiator shrouds: Good condition but paint flaked on one
  • Speedo cluster: Approx 22k miles everything works, good condition but missing surround on rev counter
  • Fast blue grab rails: Good condition
  • Standard screen: Good condition
  • Unknown DB screen: small crack. Its the one I used daily
  • MRA vario screen: Bought new, used for a week
  • Pair of shorter dogbones

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Only went in for a leather jacket
« on: 05 June 2013, 10:41:39 pm »
Had a blast on here over the years as well as the Gen 1s. Been pretty quiet on both counts over the last year - hip surgery meant 6 months off riding (at least it was over winter). All back to normal now. Never did get the jacket but 8 more sleeps and I'll be riding this ...

(and hopefully taking better pics of it)

For Sale & Wanted / FZS1000 Gen 1 Gone
« on: 01 June 2013, 06:08:01 pm »
Update: Half decent offer for PX - so back to standard she goes. If any foccer wants to have a look give me a shout, Bracknell on weekends or London (Blackfriars) during work time. Most of the spares and bits will be showing up on ebay soon so if you want owt just make a sensible offer (although I may keep the can and shock for a transplant)

02 Reg, 25k in fast blue. Taxed till end of Feb 14, MOT due this month so will have a full year.

Would prefer to sell as is rather than un-modding and selling off the bits  ;)

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Battery voltage question
« on: 21 May 2012, 01:01:42 pm »
No problems but my last throw of the dice before giving up on the speedo  :\  and looking for an alternative solution.

My battery is about a year old. Left the optimate on over the weekend and showed a voltage of 13.65 when I got to it this morning. When I got to work it was down to 12.63, and has stayed pretty constant since. I have no alarm so its only the LED on a flip-flop to make people think I have one that's drawing any additional current.

Does this provide any insight into the condition of my battery or charging system. I never had a problem starting in winter and still don't.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Before I destroy another sensor
« on: 02 April 2012, 06:34:13 pm »
Had to replace my speedo sensor in October (See here). I was fortunate enough to find one on e-bay and haven't seen one since, so I'd prefer this not to be a regular thing.
Followed all the checks recommended by Chitsu and everything checked out. Haven't done too much riding since as my employer packed me off to Poland for winter. Now I'm back and rejoining the daily rat race to London.
Last few days my speedo has been behaving erratically again (i.e. no, intermittent  or low readings). This time I have a bit more info:
  • It only does it when I have the throttle open, if I need to check my speed (say because I'm coming up to a camera) all I have to do is close my throttle - which has the added benefit of slowing me down  ;)
  • It doesn't always do it, but when it does closing the throttle always clears it
  • It never does it at motorway speeds, problem seems to go away above about 60mph - presumably that's speed related as revs don't seen to make a difference
Anyone seen anything like it before or any suggestions on what to look for?
