Whisper it quietly, but I would love to have one of the new T120 Bonnies in the garage these days ... ;)
Those nice people at Triumph gave me one to play with when the Tigress was in for a service. Surprised myself in that I rather liked it.

Errr, you do realise you're going to have to adopt a completely different riding style...

I've also heard a few times of people claiming on other peoples insurance for damage caused to their vehicle through no fault of their own, the same as this scenario, and their insurance went up because they had made a claim.
Maybe different companies have different rules. They're still all slippery buggers at the best of times though.

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cars/article-3052191/How-drivers-insurance-costs-soar-no-fault-accidents-don-t-claim.html

There is a central claims register they all tap into so you can't hide the claim. The online quoting engines always assume the worst. When I hit diesel on my 10 year old Fazer I had to claim because of the amount of damage I did to the car I slid into. My bike insurance went up to about 800 for 3rd party only. they tried to bump my car premiums (and my wife's) the following year and I had to phone around until I could find a company that would over-ride what the computer said. We both had 9yr + NCB and once I explained that it was a different class of vehicle and what actually happened they accepted it - did need a lot of phone calls though.

No problems with the SMIDSY though. I ended up not claiming as the driver's insurance contacted me and offered to pay. Still shows up on my history but has never affected a quote. Some companies hold it against you for 3 years and some for 5. I agree its best to keep insurance out of it altogether but you should never be penalised for someone else's mistake. SInce he wasn't on the bike it would be pretty hard for her to claim anything other than full responsibility unless the OP was illegally parked.

« on: 25 June 2017, 09:38:21 am »
Your SP can will work OK with the stock jetting and you might gain a little more power at peak rpm.  If it's a shorter can, though, you might lose a little in the low-mid range but the extra noise will probably hide this by making it at least sound more powerful.  :lol

He's right you know (as always eh Mike). Leave the baffle in though. I have a shorter SP (on a non-fazer) and can't feel any difference low down unless i take the baffle out. Even with the baffle in I can defnitely hear the difference though  :rolleyes

Basically, in the UK, if you ever have an accident whether you caused it, they caused it, or more than likely you even witnessed it or talked about it, then everyone's insurance goes up next time.
It's a licence to print money and mug everyone off.
If your insurance has to pay anything its regarded as "at fault" and next year your premium will probably be more than the bike is worth. Your car insurance will also go up. If her insurance pays its "no fault" and your premiums are not touched and you will not have to pay an excess. I know this from experience of both. In the "no fault" scenario they gave me a loan bike while mine was being repaired and replaced my boots and lid - I was on the stationary bike when someone drove into it. They (the drivers insurance company) said I would not be expected to be any worse off as a result of their driver's actions.

Few years ago I had a SMIDSY with a witness who offered video footage of the whole thing. First thing I did was contact my insurance to tell them what happened. A few days later the drivers insurance phoned and told me to get my bike fixed. Only after it was fixed did I phone my insurance and tell them I wouldn't be claiming. Didn't affect my premiums at all.

Doesn't hurt to keep your options open. If it does go down the insurance route I can't see her insurance quibbling over £1500.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: rear shock upgrade for touring 2 up
« on: 24 June 2017, 10:09:08 pm »
If you can afford it I can recommend a shock from Nitron who will build you a bespoke shock sprung and valved around your requirements, they have a remote preload adjuster option which would make it easier to switch between fully loaded and solo use.
:agree  Neither the R6 or the 1000RR is sold with 28 stone riders in mind - so no matter how good the shock it would still be undersprung. Going with Nitron, Wilbers etc you will end up with a quality shock that is correctly setup. And it will probably still cost less than buying a shock off another bike and getting it properly sorted.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Avon storm 3D XM tyres
« on: 24 June 2017, 09:56:00 pm »
If your front tyres are worn that's normal and they all do it when worn. If they still have plenty of tread it sounds like they are cupped. I'm personally not a fan of 021s and like many love to criticise tyre manufacturers when I have to change a front tyre prematurely.

But if I'm honest its my riding style that kills them. I tend to use only my front brakes. Current job has me doing long distance commuting (180 miles per day) and a lot of that is motorway filtering. When I changed my last pair I still had 3mm in front, 4mm at the rear but the fronts were pretty focced in the same way you describe. When I changed them I needed to replace the front pads but hadn't even broken the factory glaze on the rears. So I decided to consciously use the rear brake (only) for controlling my speed when filtering.

Too early to tell conclusively but after 4k miles the front still feels like the day after I put the new tyres on. Last set was wandering all over the road by 3k. Not saying you need to change the way you ride or that one way is better than the other. I stopped using the rear because of an arhtritic foot. By the time I started getting physio, which has really helped, I had just got out of the habit of using my foot and it had never occured to me to wonder why it was that I was wearing front tyres out quicker than rears.

3M pads are just fine. I moved mine onto the fairing to stop getting my speedo in shot  :evil  and when I realised I kept filming me putting my pin into the machine when I paid for petrol. Last one stayed in place for 3 years of daily use until I sold the bike.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Has any one done the mirror mod?
« on: 13 March 2017, 11:05:56 pm »
I did it years ago. Huge improvement to visibility. No noticeable improvement for noise (for me). Ended up putting them back though because I used to do a lot of filtering and it made the bike much wider.

12
I had a bike written off. Since it was declared a cat B and I coudn't buy it back (and I was getting another Fazer) I asked the insurance if I could take back the can, shock, rearsets and a few other bits and bobs which were all undamaged and undeclared. They said fine, as I had not declared them I could do what I liked as long as I replaced them with the OE kit.

General / Re: BBZ Fabric Handguard - Multi Fit has anyone tried these!
« on: 11 February 2017, 10:33:37 pm »

Cheers Fazersharp,
might see how I fair with the heated grips first.
Nooooo you wont - you go and buy them to test them before then spend my money on them.
Got an idea. We can go half's and have one each to test if we both like then we go 1/2s on another set, If one of us like it and one not then we can buy the other off each other.

Seriously though I very much doubt that anyone on here has tried these as the subject comes up every winter and I have been on every post about hand guards and they have never been mentioned.
I've got some. Think they are great. Been commuting 170 miles per day throughout Winter. Absolutely fine at motorway speeds. No bending or flapping and they don't restrict access to your controls.
They are more like oversized handguards than muffs. so they won't MAKE your hands warm - but they will keep the wind off.

General / Re: 4 Eyes Help Needed!!
« on: 18 January 2017, 10:41:08 pm »
I have some stuff called opti fog I got from an optician. Do need to re-apply it every 2-3 days. My last pair were hideously expensive and on those the stuff lasted about 2 weeks because they had a special coating that was activated by the opti fog. The optician did say that it would work on regular lenses but not as well. Have been commuting all through winter with my glasses.

I do keep the front vents open (always) and avoid letting the neck tube seal the helmet. When its cold I do have to open the visor a bit when I stop. My eyes are actually ok to ride without the glasses and I have tried this in case of extreme fogging, but I'm just more comfortable with perfect vision and so I ride with them.

I tend to go the other way. My logic is
 • I have to have insurance
 • I'm not planning to claim
 • I want the lowest possible premium

Is it road legal or a race can ?? And how loud is it ?
Road legal with the baffle in. I do have the baffle but no hanger. Honestly can't remember if it used the OE one or not. I did use it without the baffle about 50% of the time, including commuting into London. It is loud when the EXUP is fully open.

Clearing out the garage and found this sitting on a shelf. Definitely have the can and link pipe, assume the hangar and baffle are still attached but will confirm Monday when I get home.

Definitely do the notches if you do much (any) filtering. The mirrors do stick out noticeably further.

Do they actually heat up?

I stopped using Oxfords because I had two controllers fail after a single winter. Went for a cheaper option (R&G I think) that used analog controllers and never had a problem again. Could be the controller failed and binned it.

I've used them with no probs. Also used Event Mobile who will come and fit them at your home or office.

I had Hyperpro progressives on my first Fazer and Ohlins 9.0Nm linear on my second. Both had a Nitron Race rear shock and standard valves in front.

IMO the bike with the linear springs was way better.
