For Sale & Wanted / Re: FZS1000 / 600 (Foxeye) UK headlight
« on: 09 June 2020, 07:21:40 pm »
UK part no. is: 5LV-84310-10. It's the 10 at the end that denotes UK spec. That's for the whole unit, the reflectors were never available on their own.

I've got an EU spec headlight unit fitted to my Gen1 thanks to Flitwick MCs ordering the wrong part after an accident. The kick-up on dipped beam is quite small, so I kept it rather than wait for a replacement. It's since passed a couple of MOTs without problems, so I wouldn't worry too much if you can't get a UK spec unit.

For info the US spec headlight unit has no kick-up on dipped beam, so would be OK.. if you could find one!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Buying an FZS600 - help please!
« on: 06 June 2020, 12:21:23 pm »
You'll probably have looked at the bike by now and made your decision, but, having looked at 600 Fazers on the market recently, the price looks to be pretty average. They seem to be anything from £900 to £2800, with dealers mainly asking over £2000.

If the fairing has been removed and tidied up properly at least you should have a headlight that does what it's supposed to do.

Only you can decide whether the bike is worth it when you've seen it and factored in the work that needs doing. You won't regret buying a decent FZS600!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Can’t let go, good or bad?
« on: 01 June 2020, 04:07:16 pm »
I've been thinking along the same lines, Stew, but the Fazer's so good I really don't want to get rid of it!

I couldn't justify 2 bikes long term, but I might try for a year, see which I use more and get rid of the other.

« on: 01 June 2020, 10:16:31 am »
Already have diving trips to the Maldives and Indonesia booked and planning one to Palau in 2022. I'd also like to get back to French Polynesia sometime.

On the bike front, find a bike I like better than the Fazer.

Other than that, the main plan is to simply enjoy life!

I've got ASV levers on mine, plenty of adjustment and very good quality, but they are expensive!

Very much a matter of taste, although judging by the stone chips on mine it must have protected the downpipes and front of the motor a bit.

On the advice of others, I cut down the 758s I fitted to my thou.

How I wish I hadn't!!!! Don't cut anything until you've tried them out!

Does the failure of Norton remind anyone else of Mel Brooks' The Producers?
The company was meant to fail - like 'Springtime for Hitler' - and when it didn't the money had to be accounted for.

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FZS600 first bike - advice?
« on: 27 January 2020, 10:22:35 am »
If it's a Boxeye don't expect great headlights. If you do any riding at night you'll probably want to upgrade the lights or fit spots. Plenty of threads on here to help.

They were a bit of a "parts-bin-special" but none the worse for it. There's lots you can easily upgrade to make a very good bike even better.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Time To Say Goodbye
« on: 27 January 2020, 10:11:17 am »
Sell the Fazer and keep the R1? Are you sure, Mike, really really sure?

I know that since I retired I use the Fazer a lot less, but it'd be a real wrench to sell it and I'm not sure I could cope with the R1's riding position these days!

Anyway, I'm sure you've thought long and hard about it and this is what's best for you.

Happy travels and I hope you continue to share your workshop wisdom with the rest of us!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Tyres
« on: 01 October 2019, 04:31:50 pm »
Go for the cheaper ones!

For most riders the difference is minimal, but if you read all the different tyre threads you'l get far more opinions than you want or need; all of the major manufacturers make decent road tyres and it's all down to whether the small profile differences suit your riding style.

FWIW I've got Metzeler Z8 Interacts fitted to my Gen1 and I've got on well with them, but I've had Michelins and Contis before and they've been OK too.

The one thing I'd want that I can't see on the display is a voltmeter. So useful, but so often ignored!

General / Re: The cool bike thread......
« on: 14 August 2019, 03:27:16 pm »
There's a bit of a smell of beard oil, with all the hipster-cool bikes on the thread, but I guess cool is in the opinion of the individual. IMO, for example, BMW haven't produced a cool bike since the R90S!

Almost any bike can look cool with a bit of work, take Italian firm RossoChromo's CB1000R-based XESS, Velocity-moto's MT09-based 900LC or anything by Japanese firm AC Sanctuary, but the bike that was cool for me straight out of the crate was the Benelli TNT. Probably totally unreliable, but it looked something else!

For Sale & Wanted / Re: Foxeye 600 Selling help
« on: 24 July 2019, 04:44:22 pm »
Just a couple of points to add to the above:

1. What you can get is likely to depend on where you're trying to sell. The ULEZ in London has had an effect on the saleability/value of older bikes there and may have a similar effect in and around other cities with similar proposals.

2. Extras like the topbox don't add value unless the buyer really wants it. You may well get the same price for the bike without it and then sell it separately and make a few extra quid. If I were a buyer I'd rather see things like braided lines and a new shock, knowing that the OE items are getting on a bit.

Even the small crack to the fairing will put some buyers off, unless it's a really easy repair, the same with the marks from the drops, so be prepared for some haggling.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: FZS1000 7k on tacho at startup
« on: 13 July 2019, 10:34:04 pm »
I regularly service and lube the EXUP on mine, but it still does the same as yours on startup. It works fine once the engine is running, so I've given up worrying about it.

47
I bought mine new in 2001 and kept it until 2008, when I px'd it for a CB1000R. That was the longest I'd ever kept a bike.

I sold the Honda in 2011 and bought an '04 Gen1 which I have no plans to sell, but I'd still like a 600 to go with it!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Mirror blanking plates for fzs600 98
« on: 01 March 2019, 07:18:27 pm »
There are a few firms that make blanking plates for the R1, like LighTech, so have a look round for what you like best. It's probably worth finding an R1 owner to check the measurement between the mirror bolts to confirm they'll fit.

If the wheel from Trebus isn't suitable, check out these guys. I've used them for parts before and they're pretty quick with delivery:

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / 50000 miles up, here's to the next 50000!
« on: 14 February 2019, 03:40:37 pm »
The clock's just gone over 50000, most of it done by me in the 7-8 years I've had the bike. So that, as mentioned elsewhere, makes my Fazer pretty much worthless. It seems that, no matter how well it runs or how well it's maintained, most buyers are petrified of perceived high milages, even though it only works out at a bit over 3000 miles a year.

Well, more fool them! I've yet to see a bike that will do all the things I want it to with ease and in comfort, so I've no plans to change and I'm looking forward to the next 50000 on the Fazer.
