FZS600 Fazer / Carb balance won't go
« on: 15 May 2023, 09:42:38 pm »
I can't balance my carbs. Picture below:

Link if it's too big: https://i.imgur.com/IBs756j.jpg
1-2 is out of balance with 3-4. Anti clockwise on the centre screw should help with that, but it doesn't. I've screwed it right out to where the screw is wobbling as it's lose in the seat. Turning it the other way Makes 1-2 bog and ultimately the engine stall.

I can't get 3-4 to shift at all, they're up at the top of the gauge always. They respond normally to throttle, coming down before easing back up. Choke brings 3-4 down a bit, and 1-2 isn't changed much. They looked roughly equal on the eye test before I put them in, just open on the tickover.

I can't get the tickover down below 2.5, I think I'm right out on the tickover adjuster too.

Any suggestions before I pull the carbs out and have a look to see whats up? Things to look at when I do? Bit of crap stuck under one of the butterflys I see as a maybe, can't think of anything else.

The background: carbs are a different set to what was in a week ago, cleaned. I balanced the old carbs only 3 weeks ago, no issues. I've got new spark plugs in. New carb inlet rubbers. Exhaust headers reseated. New coolant, new oil. Coolant rubbers and rad replaced.

Thanks if you can help, I'm having a bit of a mare over here, it never seems to end.

FZS600 Fazer / Carb bits?
« on: 08 May 2023, 07:33:25 pm »
Does anybody have a box of carb bits? Picture:

The bit I need is the one in the middle. I've snapped one, one is stuck and snapped, and one is just stuck. The jets have a deeply stupid fully crossed head which snaps very easily.

If I can't get the bits, maybe I need another full set of carbs.

I'm confusing the life out of myself, I have 3 sets of carbs, and they're all different. Most of the needle jets look like the bottom one, which came off a set which I think is for my FZR400. Can't put it in, right? The needle bit at the end looks the same, but it's a different distance from the thread.

FZS600 Fazer / Overheating, no coolant loss
« on: 17 April 2023, 08:54:30 pm »
I've done something daft or damaged my bike after a cracked radiator. Still overheating I think, causing the oil filter to leak. If anyone fancies reading and giving me some pointers, any pointers at all, that would be much appreciated.

I've replaced a cracked radiator, and all the 25 year old rubber pipes. I currently have the aftermarket temperature gauge saying that the temp is ok at the top, but the oil filter just chucked oil everywhere, and it's acting like it's overheating down there. Seems strained with the throttle open. So I've done something daft, I am not sure what. Or damaged something somehow. Would the oil leaking from the filter do this?

These are connected correctly, right?

I haven't got coolant coming out anywhere. It's at the top when I open the fill whatsit under the tank, and the level is right where I left it in the overflow. It's doing the swirly thing looking at the coolant with the cover off, so I think that means it's circulating. The coolant has come out clean, the oil doesn't have any coolant in it.

My number 24 on this is maybe 2cm too long, so it's a bit bent. Looks like it's open though so I didn't worry about it on install. Pics on the Imgur link.  I've got it going to the top of 9 on the diagram, is this correct?

My plan at the moment is get the oil sealed and see how it behaves. I don't know if a leaking oil filter would make it behave like it is, but it sounds unlikely. I'm at a loss if that doesn't sort it. Busto engine somehow? Anything else to check?

Thanks if anyone can help.

*Yes I will do some painting and cleaning in there and repainting while I've the chance. It's all off now, tomorrows job is clean and paint.

FZS600 Fazer / Seat lock unit
« on: 28 April 2022, 07:23:05 am »
Does anyone by any chance have a seat lock that they can sell me? I mean the bit wot the key goes into. Happy to purchase the cable and latch with it if required.

Or if there are units from other models that fit. Bike got nicked, this is the only thing I need.

FZS600 Fazer / Bleed nipples won't release - any tips?
« on: 08 April 2020, 09:12:03 pm »
Any tips for these little bleeders? I've had the heat gun pointed at them, penetrating oil repeatedly, and they still won't release with as much force as I dare. I've snapped a few in the past, a serial balls up by me.

FZS600 Fazer / Centre stand return isn't
« on: 03 April 2020, 12:35:27 am »
So I've had my centre stand, cleaning it up as well as I can, and put a new coat of hammerite on the thing of course.

It moves ok, but it doesn't return fully. The seats are a bit naffed, but the main problem I think is how little force there is on the spring when it's up. Hence I'd like to replace the spring. Ideally a repair kit, something like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/99-9953-pre1980-TRIUMPH-T140-BONNEVILLE-CENTRE-STAND-SPRING-BOLT-FIXING-KIT/254335913656?epid=1723346190&hash=item3b379a0eb8:g:zrMAAOSwgyxWVwgn
But I can't find one for  the fazer. Any suggestions? Or spring dimensions?

I have the nuts tight, 30 Nm on them. Is this necessary, or is it safe to have them loser with the lock nuts and some thread lock on there? Maybe the issue.

Thanks if you can guide.

FZS600 Fazer / Bike has run hot - what to check and diagnostics
« on: 09 September 2012, 09:26:29 am »
I went on holiday and had a bit of a disastrous trip with the bike. Long story short, she's run without coolant for quite a long time so has run ever so hot. There are two coolant pipes that go into the head around the barrels, the o-rings for these have, incredibly, melted.

So that I know how to sort, although whether it's possible we'll see. What I'm asking about is what else I should be checking and looking at in this situation. I'll test it thoroughly next weekend after I've got a plan of action, I've only had a brief look so far.

The head gasket seems to be ok, although it's just under where it's leaking from so it's hard to be sure. The coolant I think is draining in slowly, and didn't all drain after I filled it and pulled the plug. Could this be something normal, non circulation or some such? I'm totally inexperienced with coolant systems. I'm worried that the rubber has run into places it shouldn't be :( There is rad weld in the coolant system, about 4 times as much as suggested on the bottle, so maybe this too.

Any advice greatly appreciated. And yes, I am a stupid and lucky boy that it didn't seize and chuck me off.

FZS600 Fazer / Top steering head bearing outer race
« on: 12 August 2012, 07:08:44 pm »
So mother of god, that's hard to get out of the frame. Can anyone who's done it give me some pointers? I'm well stuck, and of course it's not something I can drop in at the shop.

The bottom one I've got, as there are some big groves scored into the frame so I can get a purchase behind it with my makeshift drift.

I'm going to go down to my local general purpose tool shop and see if they can sell me something more suitable to use as a drift... any good tips on what's best to use? Bend it, file it sharp along one edge etc? Would a heat gun at the top help?

How about if I just drilled through the damn thing? This would make it easy to flip off, but of course I'd go into the frame behind. Would this have safety and handling implications?

Thanks if you can help. I'm having a bit of a tilt at the moment, I thought it would just come straight off and I've been at it for a good 3 hours. I've done it on my little FZR before and they just fall off, I don't get why they have to be so tight - and so f**king inaccessible - on the fazer  :(

FZS600 Fazer / Rev counter: 3k, normal, 0k. WTF?
« on: 25 October 2011, 06:42:14 pm »
Mk1 FZS600  rev counter doesn't always shows the revs, it shows 3k, then the revs, then 0k.

I've had the engine out to drill out an exhaust stud and do a bit of painting, so I'm guessing I've not reconnected a wire, or pinched something. I can't find anything obvious though, and can't find anything in the manual. Can anyone help???

FZS600 Fazer / Stainless steel downpipes - maintainance?
« on: 08 October 2011, 07:20:05 pm »
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't find it. I have stainless downpipes on my FZS600 mark 1, and I let them get in a bit of a state. I've had them off and been getting the rust off with a whirly wire brush drill attachment. It's leaving them very tarnished still though and I'm wondering what to do. Stainless means stainless all the way through, not just a coating like chroming, right?

Pics: http://imageshack.us/g/508/fazerzorst1640.jpg/

My options are:

Nowt, leave it skanky
sandpaper, but this takes material off
Paint - but I seem to remember that stainless doesn't take paint well?

Cheers if anyone can help.

For Sale & Wanted / Starter motor link gear cover
« on: 02 October 2011, 11:41:42 pm »
I'm after one of these... I'm sure there's a proper name, but this is what I've decided to call it ;) I mean the cover on the engine on the right hand side, the one furthest forward that covers the gears that link the crankshaft to the starter motor.

If you've got one... price me up, ta.
