If you're going to replace the brake lines, pump all the pistons out first, check the seals and rebuild using red rubber grease. Then you can discount the caliper end when you rebuild. A master cylinder rebuild kit is about £30.

I'll be on a tour of Scotland in September, but I'll have my van and caravan with me, as well as my Fazer 1000.

I removed a broken Exup valve stud last week. Easy job if you drill broken stud with small diameter  Cobalt tipped drills. Work up to 4.5 mm, then tap out the remaining thread with a tapered tap.

Thanks mate. I only have my phone and can't do much with it, but I'll have a go.

My apologies. Just reread your posts. My 2005 Fazer 1000 has a different nut to the failed ones. I assume the mechanism for failure is a manufacturing fault with the original nut.? Has there been any failures of the gearshaft threads?

Having missed the point of a torque wrench and after 40 years working on bikes, I don't understand how the nut can unscrew itself after you've engaged the locking washer on the splines and bent a tab over???? Please explain?

You don't need a torque wrench. Just ultimate it until you fart and bend the tab washer over.  It won't come loose.

If you grease the threads,  don't bother with standard torque figures, assuming you use a torque wrench.

« on: 28 June 2016, 12:28:06 pm »
Yes some rivets don't have a big enough hole in the middle and don't flare out.  I put a lump hammer behind the rivet link and tap the front with a ball pein hammer to flare it over just enough.

Looks good to me. I use two hammers when I rivet a link.

Don't bother. You would need to do a lot more work to see any benefit.  More use matching header to port.

Easy job if you have the correct tools. Remove sprocket cover, un do front sprocket nut first, undo rear spindle nut and adjusters, slide back wheel forward, remove old sprocket, fit new one, adjust rear spindle adjusters, tighten nut, tighten front sprocket nut, replace sprocket cover.

Just change the front sprocket, as long as you have room on the adjusters. 1/2 a link forward per one tooth increase should be ok.

Starting at Mansion is a bit far from Northiam.  We could meet at Headcorn, nice Cafe there.  Where is Harry starting from?

I live in Northiam near Tenterden.  I regularly rideout to the Clifftop Cafe, near the BoB monument. Can meet you there or somewhere earlier. Where are you starting from?
