Yep, my missus has a Kobo touch and I've got a normal Kindle, had them for about a year or so.  Can't fault either of them really but the Kobo has a bit more flexibility wrt fonts, layout etc, it also has a microSD slot which the Kindle doesn't (new Kindles I'm not sure)

I get all the books I need from the darker side of the Internet if you know what I mean.

I use a kindle touch, didn't think the 3G version was worth the extra as I've got wi fi at home so once you have downloaded the books, why do you need the 3G. It's a piece of piss to use and I've "aquired" 1000 books for free, if you download Calibre on to your PC you can convert any book to Kindle format and read away.

I always thought I'd never be tempted but the step daughter got one and now I wouldn't go back. I was a member of 3 librarys and the late return fines were getting bad due to my working patterns and not getting down the library as much.

It also acts as a web browser and MP3 player so it's more than just a reader.

Hi Mark,
I bought my Kindle a couple of years ago and use it almost daily (or eveningly, lol). Back then, it was the only model and it cost £111. Now there are a few models and mine has become known as the "Kindle Keyboard" which is the only one to have a full QWERTY keyboard (which is very handy).

It's an amazing bit of kit and the text is so clear that when I first got it, I spent AGES trying to peel off the fake text cover on the screen. D'oh! It wasn't fake - it was the actual text! I couldn't believe how clear it was - it's BETTER than the text in a printed book!!!  The other big plus, is the fact that you can read it absolutely perfectly in bright sunshine (say when you're on holiday or chilling in the garden). It has no backlighting, so you do need a light source to read it in bed.

Mine is the Wi-Fi only model but I think you have to buy the Wi-Fi/3G version these days. It has a SUPERB battery which just seems to last forever and it can store god knows how many thousand books.  You can also transfer documents from your PC to the Kindle in PDF format too. They work fine.

Finally, it will store and replay music while you read. My wife has an iPad with Kindle Reader on it, and that's fine too, but utterly useless in bright light.

Hope that helps.

Tom

My good lady has the Kindle with the keyboard as pictured above, she loves it and has loads of books stored on it. Display is excellent & easy to read (even outdoors when that strange light in the sky makes an appearance), and there are loads of free books available on t'internet for 'em  ;)

another one with the Kindle Keyboard version, I have the 3g version and to be honest I hardly use the 3g function, having wifi in the house. so go for the wifi version if possible

having said that its an awesome bit of kit, use it daily and if you switch off the wifi the battery lasts a month, having the fully keyboard is handy if like me you need to look up the big words  ;)

Liked it so much bought the good lady the smaller version and she's just as chuffed with it.

Calibre is the electronic library to use and has plenty of options to convert stuff to the correct formay (Mobi)

meant to add I think the Kindle has about 4gig of memory which is enough to hold thousands of books so a SD slot isn't needed

we have the scroll essential - cheap as chips and the scroll excel - bigger with more memory (well mark got that for a free upgrade after we had an issue with his scroll essential.  watching films on the scroll excel is amazing battery life is good, and the fact you can surf for porn makes it even cooler :) :) :)

yeah but this time of year we are at rallies every weekend, so there is nothing like surfing for porn on someone elses unlocked network in the middle of nowhere (they dont seem to lock their networks in the countryside)  anyway here is their site http://www.storageoptions.com/products/scroll/tablets/scroll-excel-ics

Black and white porn on the Kindle?

Weird!

The new touch has all sorts of things on it like built in dictionary, you just touch the word and it goes straight to the dictionary function, X ray, not used too much of that function but it tells you more about the book and TBH I'm still learining it inbetween reading...

My Mrs has the 'original Kindle with keyboard, I've just bought the Touch - IMHO worth the extra over the cheaper one for a 'proper' (touch) keyboard. Can't see the point in paying quite a bit for 3G though, just put enough books on before yer hols or use WiFi in a cafe - only takes a few secs per book. Great bits of kit thoug, just like reading the real thing without the pages turning on there own!

A friend of mine makes badges.  I've suggested she makes one with the pansexual rainbow on it and "Who needs 50 shades of grey" on it! :D
