Lithium based grease
« on: 03 March 2015, 12:14:34 pm »
Rather than getting it done at a garage, I'm looking at replacing the chain on my FZ6 myself as it seems to be a reasonably straight forward job.

One thing I'm not sure about, though, is that the Haynes manual recommends using a Lithium Based Grease on the rear axle and looking online shows a multitude of different types, brands and prices.

So is there actually a vast difference between them or is it just the brand name you're paying for?

Just brand name imo Graham. Lithium Grease is just oil thickened with lithium and any brand will be fine for the rear axle.

And regarding the chain replacement - Be sure to loosen the front sprocket before splitting the chain.

If there is one labelled "high Temperature" it may be worth getting a small tin of that as the axle can get hot.

Halfords do large pots of brand name lithium grease and copper clip for about a five/six quid each I think. May well be cheaper by the time you've accounted for shipping.

I've got 500g pots of various grease from Halfords. It's a bit more expensive than some of the online stuff but it's available immediately and the stuff will last me for ages as such a large quantity :)

Rubbish. Even if a bearing  seized up the axle would get nowhere near hot enough to trouble ordinary grease.
Don't waste your money Graham, just get lithium grease of any brand and use the mearest of smears on the axle.
 High temperature, my arse.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I'm not in a mad rush for it as I'm going to go on holiday soon. Also I'll have to buy or blag a chain tool off someone, so I'll do it when I get back.
