Feckin magistrates I wun't pay em in tap washers . please feel free to rant on cos I'm speechless. Serial Drink driver nearly kills biker is spared jail. Spared jail: Serial drink-driver who left biker for dead in crash horror Thomas Scully leaving Manchester Magistrates Court By Paul Britton 11 Mar 2013 07:21 A serial drink-driver was spared jail after he smashed his car into a teenager and left him for dead in a road. Thomas Scully, 63, who was more than twice the legal limit, had spent four hours drinking in a pub in Openshaw when he decided to drive home. Scully had two previous convictions for drink-driving when he crashed into 17-year-old biker Michael Daniels on Ashton Old Road, Openshaw. But magistrates decided not to send him to prison and instead imposed a suspended sentence. They heard that Michael was riding a Yamaha 125 bike wearing a helmet, protective clothing and a high-visibility vest during the horror collision in January. Scully turned right directly into his path, Manchester magistrates’ court was told. Michael was rushed to hospital and almost died when his heart stopped beating during a six-hour operation. The teenager suffered a broken shoulder and thigh bone and spent two nights in an induced coma, but is now recovering well at home. Scully, a construction company worker from Halliday Road, Newton Heath, drove off at speed in his VW Bora but was arrested after a witness who saw the crash followed him for more than a mile and managed to remove the keys from the ignition. The court heard Scully pulled over believing the witness was a police officer. He pleaded guilty to drink-driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and driving without due care and attention. Scully’s two previous drink-drive convictions were in the 1990s. He was given a suspended jail sentence of 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and banned from the road for two years. Scully was also ordered to complete more than 250 hours of community service by magistrates who said the case was one of the worst with which they had dealt. Barbara Amuzu, chairwoman of the bench, said: “The young man could have died.” Richard Andrew, spokesman for the road safety charity Brake said: “Drink-driving is incredibly dangerous and selfish behaviour which shows no concern for the law or for the safety of other road users, and can have devastating consequences. “Tough sentences are needed where drivers show a reckless disregard for the lives of others. Brake encourages judges and the courts to use the full range of powers available to them for those who flout the law, in order to provide an active deterrent to other drivers from taking such enormous risks.” http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/thomas-scully-drove-home-twice-1734981Read more at 6
