FZS600 Fazer / making the bike faster
« on: 21 March 2024, 11:10:29 am »
Hello everybody, unsure how to use this site so hopefully i’m doing it right but ported the cylinder heads out (lots of imperfections surprisingly when cast) and milled it so that 99 octane fuel can now be used to my advantage for extra power on the 600 (engine was already out replacing the 2nd gear shift fork)  however this does mean regular fuel will cause detonation so premium only from now on yay

curious why you need tensioner access?
to be able to remove the old camshaft

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Ongoing FZS 600 project
« on: 02 July 2023, 11:23:15 pm »
Hey I decided to create a post summarizing my first restoration ever, on my fzs 600 98 my first bike.

Ive already dismantled it and went through virtually every part of the bike, only a few minor things have to be finished off. and I am trying to keep it as close to original as possible with only a new exhaust system, seat cover  grips and levers  and some hoses being the only visual differences. its still ongoing and I plan on updating this post until its completed.

Engine work

replaced the cam chain.
redone all valve clearances (13 were out of spec)
resprayed with heat resistant matt engine paint, valve cover white heat resistant paint.
carburetors cleaned out and rebuilt.

Frame and plastics

all plastics resprayed with VRC1 exact colour of red as original.
plastics also welded with hot staples and plastic bonder.
frame sprayed with black and 2k clear coat over.

suspension

replaced the original shock with a low mileage used one. (might upgrade to yss in future)
front forks are working fine with no seal leaks. ( might upgrade forks or springs in future)

cooling system

replaced damaged radiator with good used one.
buying radiator guard soon.
new as3 performance red hose kit with stainless hose clamps.

wheels

sprayed black and clear coated with 2k
new metzeler m5 interact tires.
looking great :) keep it up!!

you could just remove the ht leads and the valve cover, you shouldnt need to remove everything, if you could I would greatly appreciate it as I am seriously considering it and the only thing holding me back is worry about the timing and the fact I dont know how its supposed to look with the thundercat cams. thanks
wel you would need the fuel tank off to get to the head cover bolts (which is unbolted in a Criss cross pattern starting from outwards and making your way inwards (but opposite direction when installing)) and you'll need the carbs pushed upwards (you don't need to remove the carbs, just undo the clamps and push it up) this is needed to get to the camchain tensioner.

TL DR:
fuel tank off for head bolt access and carbs pushed up for camchain tensioner access.

I currently commute almost everyday to the airport since I'm a pilot in training which should finish in about 2 months so I could take pictures when that's all completed but let me check if I have some old pictures, I will check and upload them later if I find any

I wouldn't mind removing the tank, side covers, battery, airbox, spark caps, carbs, head cover to show you what my timing looks like

you can keep the original timing of the Fazer for low end.torque with a bit of oomph but timed for high end it will just zoom away.

did you dyno the bike before and after? Does it really make a difference or is it wishful thinking?
no Dyno but it definitely tries to power wheelie like never before especially on 2nd and 3rd

Hi guys, I am extremely late but this message is for the future people reading. I successfully swapped my 03 fzs600 camshafts with an 02 yzf600r thundercat's. I kept the same timing chain since I swapped the Fazers camshafts sprockets onto the t-cats camshafts. the timing is not the same on the two, don't be discouraged it wasn't difficult, I just took photos beforehand and eyeballed it since the markings on the camshaft caps are different for the two. I'm not sure if I replaced the Fazers camshafts caps with the thundercats camshaft caps and followed the t-cats timing, if anything would be different or not I'm not sure but I kept the original timing however I believe if I did infact apply the t-cats timing then low end would be subtracted for increased top end.

another thing, if you want a burble tune with lots of pops and bangs, I suggest advancing the original Fazer exhaust cam timing by 1 tooth (I kept it like that for half a year) and no damage was done besides minor power loss but it was well worth the pops :)

upon swapping the camshafts over, I had realised that the exhaust cam was advanced by 1 tooth lol. no wonder it sounded like it had a burble tune.

rest assured all went well, if you are looking to do this then make sure you swap the camshaft sprockets over and that's it. also the timing is tricky as the timing marks are different but you can keep the original timing of the Fazer for low end.torque with a bit of oomph but timed for high end it will just zoom away.
