Wanted - Standard Gen 1 Handlebars
« on: 15 October 2018, 04:01:41 pm »
Now there's a thread title you never thought you'd see ...  :lol
However, I'm asking because the Spanish MOT-equivalent test regs have changed yet again (doh!!) since May this year and it now appears that they will only test a vehicle that appears to be completely standard.  Any aftermarket parts will only be considered if you can provide EU-type approval documentation for them.

It doesn't matter that a vehicle has previously passed import tech inspection - as was the case with my much-modded Fazer - the new regulations apply retrospectively.  My mate, Dave, was refused a test for his '04 Gen 1 this afternoon and between us we are having to acquire the parts needed to put the bikes in standard trim for the bi-annual tests.

Mine is pretty much stock now and I have it arranged so that I can swap out the non-standard parts (indicators, end can, levers and screen) in an hour or so.  Seems I'll now have to change bars (Renthals technically aren't for road use, so no EU-type approval) which is why I need an original set to fit when the time comes around.  I will probably have to lose the R1 radial front brake master cylinder and the Armstrong wavy discs, too.  Grrrr ... bloody Spanish bureaucrats!
Anyway, back to the point, has anyone got a set of original bars they would like to sell, please?  I'll be back in the UK a couple of times before December so would be looking to have them posted to our UK address.
Cheers!
Mike

Thanks for the offer but unfortunately not ... they have to be off the original Gen 1 Fazer.

Same goes for any other parts unless they are separately type-approved.  For example, Akrapovic end cans are EU-approved so they can be fitted but a TCP undertray (made in Spain, FFS) isn't EU-approved so is not legal these days.
I think that's why Ogri considers it to be crazy - because it is! :)

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind.  However, knowing how picky the testers are these days, any fault could lead to a fail so I would prefer to hold out for a perfect set first. :)

Mike, you need to move to the Czech Republic. Apparently they have just introduced new legislation that only requires a bike to have an MOT(equivalent) every 4 years.

At least it's only every 2 years here in Spain not annually, but 4 years would be great.  Imagine having to go through this PITA every year!

I do wonder sometimes whether it would be easier to trade the Fazer in as you suggest but it would have to be standard to be accepted by a dealer, so no real benefit doing it that way.

Fortunately I have most of the original parts (except the bars, they got left in Bristol in 2004) and a good few other spares as well.  So, the mighty Thou will remain in the garage for a few more years yet, I hope. :)

OK Mike, I've checked and have the handlebars you want. Let me know where you want them sent. You can have them for the cost of postage.

Standard bike only  :\ errr..
Will you have to put the AIS smog octopus back on top of the cylinder head, then? Plenty of them to choose from on ebay at least...

Thankfully that doesn't seem to be required at the moment, although I wouldn't rule anything out still. It doesn't make any difference to the emissions readings at idle or at 5k rpm which where they test for noise.

Takes me about a morning to swap out all the non-standard bits and the same to reverse the process afterwards.  It's a PITA but at least it only occurs every couple of years.
