I've never used a voltmeter to set the TPS.  Just tweaked it until the tacho needle bounced between 5 - 10k.  :D

I can think of no logical reason for two carbs on one side of the motor to be richer than the others, Tim.  It can't be coil-related because they're 1-4, 2-3.

I set mixture screws at 4 1/4 turns out usually but back when I started doing the Full Monty installs, I followed Ivan's instructions for 4 1/2 to 5 turns.  I found that a bit rich on my own bike and reduced accordingly.  That's why I asked for a timeframe on when I might have done your bike.  If you're going to check/adjust the mixture screws, go with 4 turns out.

I'm sure the needle spacers will be correct - unless someone else has been messing since I did the job, of course.

It sounds like you're particular with maintaining the K&N filter but is it possible you might have over-oiled it?  As you can tell, I'm reaching for ideas here. :)

Also, I wonder if the Delkevic with baffle in is restricting gas flow a touch.  Might cause a bit of back-up in the EXUP chamber or alter the scavenging characteristics of the exhaust. 

Do you have an ignition advancer fitted?  When did you last check your TPS setting?  Try it at 10k to advance the ignition and see if this perks up throttle response.

Sorry I can't direct you at a specific reason but this is the first time I've seen this mentioned.

Blocked pilot jets.  I'll put money on it. :)

The fuel is old, too, so that won't be helping.  Strip and clean the carbs, no need to change jets or settings. 

Also, while you have the carbs out, change the O-rings on the float needle valve seats.

I'm surprised no-one else has commented on the complete absence of oil, grease, dirt or other crap on any single component of the bike in those photos. 

Seriously, when was the last time you saw the underside of a Fazer look that clean unless it was sitting new on the showroom floor? :D

So. Early r1 4xv cams 98-00 will not fit from my experience, which is counter to everything Ivan has recommended in the thread posted by falcon

Sorry but you misread my posts.

I linked you to a thread answering your question about fitting the R1 head gasket but there is no reference in that by Ivan or anyone else about using 4XV R1 cams.

I said from the outset that I wasn't sure about fitting 4XV cams to the Fazer 1000.  Unfortunately, you have learned the hard way that it isn't possible.

Hope the rest of the rebuild goes well. :)

My first checks would be (after the earth connections) the ignition switch and the Run/Stop switch.  Flush the ignition switch with contact cleaner.  Check all the wiring running to both switches, looking for signs of failure.

The bang is unburnt fuel in the exhaust suddenly igniting as the sparks come to life.  I don't think it's fuel-related.

Using the R1 race gasket will give a compression ratio around 13.3-1.... this will still run well on 93 octane pump gas.

The FZ-1 stock gasket is appx .032" thick and the R1 race gasket is .020".

Using the R1 stock gasket will give 12.4-1 compression...

Lowering the head (using a thinner gasket or milling) will cause the cams to need to be re-degreed due to adding more slack in the cam chain.... the FZ-1 has slotted sprockets, so no need to buy a set.

This is the easiest way to increase compression... for the rpm range that this engine runs, the added compression will not cause the powerband to end early.

Using the gasket and setting the cams to 107in/101ex will give great results... using 105in/100ex will give better midrange at the expense of some top end.

Stock cam timing is 105/105...

105 on the exhaust doesn't really add any top end as compared to 100ex, but costs some midrange.... this is another area that this engine is detuned.

The good power cam timing window for 5 valve Yamahas is pretty narrow...

Increasing compression will give more power across the entire rpm range, but in order to make the most increase across the range, an ignition module becomes necessary as well as re-degreeing the cams.

A Yosh full system is a necessity as well due to the need for the longer header tubes to make the midrange.

Might as well clean all the valves and replace all the valve seals while you are in there.

IIRC, if you fit an R1 head gasket you can gain benefits by tweaking the valve timing slightly.

Not sure about the 4XV cams but I bet there's something on't t'internet about it somewhere. :)

I know for sure that there's no jet kit installed. I've cleaned the carb's and everything looked original. I also live in the Netherlands and as far as i know there aint many ivanized fazers over here. I'm not affraid to work on the carb's or engine and i actually like to take things apart. I will order the mb kit and with all the instructions on this forum i guess it will all be alright. Thank's for the reactions and Mike, if i mess things up may i ask for your help?

OK, good to know what you're dealing with.  Yes, MB kit definitely the way to go since you already have the air filter and less restrictive end can.

Just PM me if you need any assistance.  And don't stress about removing the carbs - it's actually quite easy.  The trick is to make sure you have sufficient clearance between the back of the carbs and the airbox stubs.  You get this by pulling the EXUP cables out from between the airbox and the frame.  There's a few other tips that are covered in the stuff you've probably found online already.  Good luck. :)

Good evening, i'm planning on ivanising my 03 fazer, can  anyone tell me witch one i should get. My bike has a pipercross airfilter and an leovince sbk slip-on exhaust. Do i need the slip on kit or is the mb kit also possible.

Are you confident the bike hasn't already been fitted with one of Ivan's kits?

I fitted several hundred to bikes owned by members of this forum over the years and I typically used Pipercross air filters in the process.  Based on the number of Gen 1 Fazers sold in the UK, there's a one in seven chance that I may have worked on your bike.

Simple ways to check include removing a carb top and inspecting the slide spring - if it's been cut and folded at one end, that's a solid indication the carbs have been worked on.

You could also remove the air filter lid and see if that has been modified, too.

As for 'is it worth it?', I think you would have several hundred very positive 'yes' responses if you could contact the owners of all the bikes I modified for them. :)

Turn the screws in fully until they just seat, then back them out 4 & 1/4 turns. 

Haynes manual would only give stock settings anyway, so not relevant for the Full Monty install.

Ivan himself says 4 & 1/2 to 5 turns out but I found that made the idle mixture a bit too rich.

Which bush is stuck?  The one inside the EXUP housing at the far end of the valve, or the bush that fits in the EXUP cover?

In either case, provided that the valve spindle rotates freely in the bush without excessive freeplay, it's not matter for concern.  Just slather it in copper grease when you reassemble it and call it good.

Missed this earlier, sorry.

Two options with Ivan's kits and stock headers:

Fit Slip-On kit and keep stock silencer or fit aftermarket end can.  The latter will give around 128bhp with no other mods.  The stock silencer will give less peak bhp but the midrange gains and smoother throttle response from idle will be the same.

Fit MB kit and aftermarket end can.  You will also have to modify the airbox lid, fit a performance air filter and profile the intake stubs.  This combination is what is know as the Full Monty.  Will give up to 136bhp on a good engine, maybe more if you're lucky.

You should not fit an MB kit without the other mods and certainly not with a stock silencer.

Here's what I wrote in case anyone else is wondering:

You can enlarge the second hole but it makes very little difference to performance and tends to make the mixture a little too rich at part throttle.  Also, it's more difficult to get at the rear hole, so overall it is easier and just as effective to enlarge only the middle hole.The Slip-On kit has 122.5 main jets, the MB kit (used for Full Monty) has 127.5 mains and a different needle profile.  The MB kit is designed to flow more fuel to work with less restrictive full system exhausts.  However, with the appropriate mods to the inlet rubbers and airbox lid, it works very well with the stock headers and a less restrictive end can.Hope this helps. I'm still checking in from time to time but currently rather preoccupied.  Father had a stroke back in April and we're over in the UK caring for him since his discharge from hospital.

The pilot jet, needle and main jet influence on fuelling is cumulative rather than separate.  As the throttle is opened, the needle profile and main jet size take precedence but fuel still flows through the pilot jet and the idle mixture screw setting still has some influence on the a/f ratio at mid-full throttle.

I found that if you tend to ride mostly on part-throttle and keep the revs below 6-7k rpm then the plugs will be more likely to show blackish and there will be some sooting around the exhaust outlet. 

Although Ivan recommends 4.5 - 5 turns out on the mixture screws, I settled on 4 - 4.25 turns after a few years of doing his kit installations.  Ivan also says it's optional to enlarge the second bypass hole.  I favoured just enlarging one hole - it didn't seem to make any difference on performance but reduced the tendency to run too rich at idle.

While plug colour is a guide to fuelling, it doesn't tell the whole story.  Anyone who remembers doing plug chops on 2-strokes will understand what I mean. :)

The plugs in the OP's photo are much like mine were and I would call them typical of a Full Monty installation.  You could spend time and money on a dyno trying to fine tune the mixture screw setting but I suspect it would make only a marginal difference.  Is it worth the hassle and cost to strive for an ideal a/f ratio at the very bottom end of the rev range/throttle position?  I don't think so. :)
