Boot's on the other foot...
« on: 23 August 2012, 09:12:13 am »
My local independent garage (Bolton Motorcycle Workshop) is fitting my IVANS KIT for me and has just emailed me with a photo of one of the Carb Inlet Boots. He reckons it's probably been fitted like this from the factory because nothing else seemed disturbed around the carbs (2007, 12k bike). As you can see from the photo, it's got a kink which might lead to an air leak, so he's gonna fit a new one. Hope it doesn't delay the return of my bike for this Bank Holiday Weekend!

Huh? My bike is the 2005 model (FZS100S) but wasn't put on the road until 2007.

What I meant was, its possibly late enough for some of the parts to be have made in the Brazil or one of the others where the quality can be questionable.

Are you on commision you c*nt?  :lol I'd like to add that the owner/mechanic of that shop is top quality, he's done a few jobs for me and definitely goes the extra mile. Regarding the inlets I believe Mike opens those out when fitting 'the full monty' Ivans kit, so the malformation may well have had some sort of negative influence of carburation.

You need to have a word with your mechanic because that's not a carb boot!

What is commonly referred to as the 'boot' is in fact the intake stub which connects the carbs to the cylinder head.

What he's shown you in the photo is the connector between the airbox and the carb.  An air leak there won't cause any problems at all with the fuelling.

You maybe need to make sure he understands what he's supposed to be doing if he's supposed to be modding the intake stubs for a Full Monty Ivan's installation.

Also, there's no need to remove those airbox connectors if the carbs are removed properly.

Why do I have an uneasy feeling about this ... :(

You're right Mike - it is the carb-to-airbox connector. In fact, reading through the mechanic's email again, he does actually say it's that. He's just asking do I want it changing because it's kinked and damaged - it's only £6.
My bad  :rolleyes

However, as you suggest, a small air leak there won't make a blind bit of difference! He isn't doing a full monty - just the slip-on mod. He said the mod to the carbs was very easy and I passed him high-quality printouts of all the online instructions and even bought a good pin-vise to make sure he wasn't tempted to 'bypass' the bypass drilling  :lol

This guy tunes Gixers and Blades to very high levels and his work has been featured a few times in Performance Bikes magazine. I'm sure it'll all be fine  :D

Hi Tom

Reassuring to know a bit more and I'm pleased to hear that yer maun is up to snuff with the Ivanising.  It's just that most installation cock-ups seem to occur in professional workshops.

Looking at the second photo it looks like the retaining clamp was tightened while misaligned.  Might have been like that from the factory but more likely the carbs have been disturbed at some time since.  Either way, sensible to change it out for a new part.

:)
