K&N filter needed please
« on: 17 February 2015, 10:05:05 pm »
Hi guys and girls, new member here looking for some help :)

I bought a fazer and it just wasn't running properly for me to find out there was a car sponge in the air filter :( not a happy bunny

Not massively mechanically minded to change the OEM one, that just seems too difficult and I was told the K&M would be better for it.  Does anyone have one going cheap pretty please?

Thank you very much :)

Ebay is probably your best bet, that's usually where I get mine from.
FZS600, Speed Triple 1050, FZS1000, DT175MX etc.

It's a K&N filter, they're £37 new on eBay but it will be the last one you ever buy for the bike and you shouldn't need to touch it again for 50000 miles if the manufacturer is to be believed.
They're really not that difficult to fit either, although the tank will have to be removed.

So was that a sponge AS a filter or a sponge was well as the filter.
Also the OEM and K+N both fit the same
And if you have got that far to see the sponge then you are almost there to change it
I don't do rain or threat there of. dry rider only with no shame.

Don't suppose the previous owner threw his/her bike washing kit in with the sale, you may find a clean filter in the bag  ;)

£37 is very, very cheap.... Just be sure that it is not one of the counterfit ones that are coming in from China at the moment. They should be £44 thats what I sell them for in the shop (and thats with 10% off)

They were £30 not so long ago, the price is steadily rising, and they're sold by YB Filters, so they look totally legit.

On sale from £48 too.

Do you have any pictures of the 'car sponge'?

Not meant as a criticism, but when someone says they are not mechanically minded enough to change an air filter, I'd say get a friend or local garage to do the work. Easy to make things worse if you don't know what you're playing with.

Yeah 48 is list price.... But there are alot of fake ones on the market at the moment, they look quite convincing... I have seen a few. If they are anything like the fake NGK spark plugs that flooded the market last year then I dread think what'll happen if one breaks up and goes into the carb or even gets as far as the valve. :eek

But giving them the benefit of the doubt they may well have some old stock

To the average eye are there any obvious, or even not so obvious signs to look out for at all to spot a moody one?

One thing I really did notice about the previous Hi/Flo filter I had in before my K&N was how ill fitting it was in comparison.
There was a good 5mm of play in it, whereas the K&N almost felt like it was vacuum sealed around the edges.

The Hi flo ones are not ill fitting they fit pretty much the same as the Yamaha own fit compared to the K&N ones are a very tight fit.... Its difficult to explain but if you work with filters all the time the moody K&N's don' t feel right in the hand, the mesh feels flimsy and the rubber section on the top just doesn't feel well finished

You saying that is now hinting towards me having had a moody Hi/Flo filter back then, because the bike ran like shite as soon as it was fitted.
Not 100% sure but think it may have been 'Red98' who had the same issue around the same time?

With the cost of hi-flo filters I don't think anybody would make knock off ones... Just no money in it  :rollin

Maybe you had a badly manufactured one as I have fitted 100's of hi-flos and never really had a problem with them, but yeah they do flap around in the airbox but then so do Yamaha ones.... They are designed to be disposable which is why they are pennies and the K&N one aren't

Hi darrsi...well remembered, it was me, looking back I dont think it was the cause of my stuttering problem, the k+ns are a much better fit in the air box , hiflo's , as stated by deefer.are a good copy of the yam ones at a fraction of the price, I would buy another one, the reason I run k+n's is for the life span....yes they cost abit more but if the bikes a keeper it makes sense in the long run
One, is never going to be enough.....

Just had a K&N filter delivered today, from fleabay, £37 (was £48), from YB Filters and looks legit to me, got the original stickers *2 in the box as well as other cards with info on, all looks ok to me, will see when I fit it in the bike :-)

I agree I fitted just a k&n at Xmas and my fuel economy  has gone up from 54mpg to 61mpg!!! Thought I was going mad but it's been the same for 2 1/2 months.
Well pleased!

I also have a K&N on the way from ebay seller ybfilters.

My mileage is 65-70 mpg, which could be frightening and a sign of running lean, though mostly I ride slow and calm. Carbs are at default settings and balanced, spark plugs ok, Shark stainless exhaust. Engine has 80000 kms on the clock. Despite the slightly low compressions I measured in the cylinders, performance is very good. Cooling fan is on every second leap year, so I do not think it is overheating.

How would you check if the engine is running lean? I can check if the spark plugs are whiteish... (mine seem ok) any other methods?

I've had over 70mpg on a run to North Wales, in the rain, you don't push it on those roads in the wet :-)
