FZS600 Fazer / Re: Camchain replacement
« on: 29 July 2013, 05:44:01 pm »
hi humbucker i was wondering how you attached the old chain to the new chain to thread it through? Also did you have to take the cam out to do this or did you do with them in? Thanks.

Hi, i'm about to try and fit a new cam chain. I was wondering if it's possible to thread the new cam chain with the cams still on. Also how did you attach the old chain to the new chain with copper wire?

FZS600 Fazer / Cam Chain
« on: 26 July 2013, 11:00:08 pm »
Hi, so i own a 99 fazer 600 with 31k on the clock. For the last 1000 miles or so i have had a cam chain tick when cold/ after riding for 10-15 mins. although after about 10-15 mins it did get a lot quieter. Anyway, i thought i would try the usual take the plugs out and roll back trick. Didn't work. So i decided to take the cam chain tensioner off and it was fully extended. i reset it and refitted and as i thought still a tick. Is this time for a new cam chain then?

I'm going to be doing this job myself and as the bike is my only transport i will need to do it quickly. (in one day hopefully) I'm going to do it in the frame with a rivet link and open ended cam chain.

Any advice on where to get the chain and how to best go about doing this would be great.#

Also one question that comes to mind is how do i split the old cam chain? do i need a special link splitter or just a bog standard one?

Thanks, Dan.

FZS600 Fazer / front Sprocket Nut Dealer Problem.
« on: 15 July 2013, 11:49:57 am »
Just a quick question. My sprocket nut is the old style nut, but it is not loose. Should the local dealer replace the nut FOC? If so does this have to be during a service or can i literally just take it to the dealer for them to change the nut without paying for a service. Thanks.

Does anyone have the front right hand crank case cover. It's number 11 on this diagram.

Thanks.

Look at my post at the bottom of the page     http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,3710.msg73858.html#msg73858

I'll quote the service number when I go in, hopefully they can't ignore that!

FZS600 Fazer / Front Sprocket nut question
« on: 21 June 2013, 10:39:49 pm »
Hi, so I was reading the thread about the front sprocket nut issue that has affected so many people. I decided to go check mine to see if it was the old or new style. Turns out its the 9mm old style nut. Has anyone recently been to a dealer to get them to change it, are they still doing this for free? And if I go in and they play it down saying it's not a know issue or some bull shit like that.. is there anything I can say? Cheers, Dan.

FZS600 Fazer / Sanding Forks and maybe painting
« on: 19 June 2013, 09:24:46 pm »
Hi, so lately I have been thinking about sanding down the bottom part of my forks and either spraying them silver or just keeping it brushed aluminium as they're quite flakey.
Has anyone had a go at this and got any tips?
would you remove the forks to do this or just remove the wheel and mudguard?

Thanks, Dan

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Oil filter removal
« on: 19 June 2013, 07:06:01 pm »
hmm, with normal downpipes you definitely don't have to remove them to remove the oil filter... so sounds like you might have to drop the pipes due to poor design! Is the new filter the same size?

I'm not sure, probably depends how much fuel its overflowing if it is the case. If only a small amount then maybe no noticeable affect to performance. Might even make it easier to start on cold days...  Probably wait for some more opinions before you take the carbs off though.

just a guess, but something to do with carb float height. If one is too high fuel will run out of the carbs and into the cylinder past the piston and into the sump. Take the carbs off and make sure they're in spec.

Just to clarify, when the bike is cold, if you go full throttle it will go up the rev range fine with no stuttering? But once the bike is warm it will stutter as soon as you give it full throttle? Are you using choke when it's cold? If not put some choke on when its cold and then give it full throttle. If it stutters, then this may point towards over fuelling or not enough air  as the problem when the engine is up to temperature. Also you can test this again by seeing if putting choke on when the bike is hot makes the stutter worse. Let us know what happens when you try this. Cheers.
Stuttering, or bogging down can be caused by too much air!
Happened to my bike when one of the carb rubbers folded in on itself when my mechanic refitted them, and number 3 inlet rubber was letting air in.
Everytime i went to overtake or generally give the throttle a bit of welly it would splutter all over the place and bog down.
I had to have the bike in elsewhere to get them to look at my carbs and they showed me what they found.

yeah true too lean mixture will do that as well. If that is case here, when he puts the choke on during the warm ride it should make the stuttering less noticeable as he would be increasing the fuel to air mixture. Either way wacking the choke on will hopefully show us something.. or nothing maybe.. Although if it was too lean that would cause idle hunting and make it difficult to start as well? Which I don't think he has mentioned. It will be interesting to see what's causing this!
Not necessarily, i only noticed problems when opening the throttle right up, idle was fine and if i rode the bike easily there wasn't really an issue.
I even had 3 mechanics ride it and "they say" that they couldn't feel anything wrong, but obviously i ride the thing every day and knew damn well it wasn't right.
It cost me a fortune to get that sorted. As the carbs were off and i was booked into PDQ already i told him he may as well clean them up while i was there.  :'(
Damn, that doesn't sound fun at all. did you need a new carb rubber or jus reposition the old one?

Now get the sandpaper out and sand the fins so no one can tell its been painted. (Always a giveaway when I look at pics on eBay)

Ha, so true! When i was looking on ebay, i kept thinking this doesn't look quite right on a few of the fzs600's and then realised it was the painted fins.

Probs a good idea just to check the Throttle position sensor incase it was knocked some how in storage. Because it could be thinking your at a different throttle positioning and changing the timing etc Its very easy to check just follow this guide.

It wasn't that rough before those photo's, that was the result of the Gunk, a severe jet wash and rubbing down with wet 'n' dry, i'd never be that messy or disrespectful to my bikes!!
After that bit of prepping the first spray started to bubble because of reacting to the engine brightener which i presume has some sort of silicone in it.
It took several attempts of thinners then sanding before the spray actually took properly, the main problem area being on the top of the fins.
If anyone's considering doing this, make sure you thoroughly degrease the engine with Gunk and a brush, otherwise you will have no end of a headache. Fortunately my mate knows what he's doing, hence the results.
I used a Plastikote Satin Black spray, but didn't use lacquer as i didn't want a glossy finish.
I was reassured it would be fine on the engine as my mate has used it on his car engine with no problems whatsoever, and it was done in the old fashioned way with the engine still on the bike as the photo's show.  :)

Thanks! I'll definitely consider doing this over summer. Do you need an undercoat/primer with that paint or does it not matter? (sorry know very little about painting!)

:eek wow, amazing. I'm thinking of doing this to my bike as my engine is looking a bit tatty. What was the process? Did you have to remove the engine from the frame? Also what paint did you use and did you use a primer and lacquer? cheers.

Does anyone happen to have either a rear hugger or a double bubble screen for a 1998 fzs600?

Let me know prices and i may take it off you hands.

« on: 14 June 2013, 08:21:09 pm »
Pretty sure you can get tax whenever. The thing is no matter when you get the tax it always starts from the beginning of the month. So if you went to get it today it would start from the beginning of June. You definitely don't have to wait until July to get tax. I mean if you don't want to pay for tax from the beginning of June then yeah you have no choice but to wait, but you can definitely get tax now if you want it.
