Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Pilot Roads
« on: 23 March 2013, 10:48:07 am »
Hi all,
Apologies if you are snowed in today or yesterday, but I had the first really decent day of March, warm roads not too much farm shite thoughtfully spread over said roads so I decided to go for a ride. Anyway.......
It felt like the back end was all over the place, at one point breaking for a bend it locked up, not fun! The tyres were nice and warm and the road was clean and dry too, the tyres in question are Michelin Pilot Roads no number so am assuming PR mark 1, not that old, 2 years and about 4500 miles on them. They have a decent amount of tread on but the back felt really loose anyone else had a similar experience? Tyres that look ok but the performance has just gone AWOL? Bloody grateful it didn't rain at any point and hence why I am not going out today!!
Cheers
Tommo

Mmm that doesn't look as big as the 20 inch moniker would suggest. Makes your bike look a big FJR (not  a bad thing in my view) did you import the screen or was it already fitted to your bike and if you did was it expensive??

« on: 18 March 2013, 08:26:34 pm »
with regards to leaving the bike.....
In August 2008 I had to leave my 2004 gen 1 in  a cellar for 6 months unattended, as it has a datatool 3 fitted from new when I went back to the bike (Feb 2009) the battery was totally flat. After an hour or so on charge the bike fired up and I rode it 80 miles left it outside over night and the next frosty morning it fired up no worries. The battery finally died this feb after nearly 9 years service and I reckon it was only the rubbish weather during dec, jan and feb that meant I couldn't give the bike any decent runs that did for it. So I never had any probs with gummy fuel, and apart from the time in feb 2009 have never charged the bike battery. I hope yours doesn't have any serious probs just before the (hopefully) start of the decent weather!!

Measure the voltage with a bit of throttle on, at least say 3000rpm then it should read into the 14V region and then all is well, if the voltage does not go up then you may need to find the alternator and check across it, if all well there then its  a wire/connection prob if not mmmm!!

Couldn't agree more about ill fitting gear and air swirling around helmets and geting in underneath. My Nolan is both a flip front and 10 years old so maybe time for a newer lid.
Take the point about the C3 but they are dear!
Also like the idea of noise cancelling ear buds, I do like to listen to music when riding and the Nolan has an interphone F4 installed so will look into finding a cheap pair of noise cancellers.
I also see that no-one has commented on modding a fazer to make a cruiser, surely someone has done this, maybe in the USA or Japan???
I have seen fazer trikes but never seen the point of a trike: you get cold and wet like a bike but stuck in traffic like a car.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / re bars and screens etc etc
« on: 15 March 2013, 10:06:03 pm »
Hi all,
Been reading posts about screens and bars and so on whilst waiting  for my new battery to arrive. Well it arrived yesterday gave it  a 2 hour charge annd it started the bike straight away. Went for the firsdt decent ride of the year, the weather here has been pretty shite since Jan, either icy snowy or bloody wet. Then this morning it was bright blue sky bloody cold (for mid March) but bugger it, I had a new battery and was gonna use it!
Anyway.....the bike was ace, so much better than me after a few months off, I did lean into a few corners, watching closely for the shite left behind by the local tractors and the gravel left behind by the gritters, it snowed yesterday! The point I want to make is that I was getting shoulder and neck ache because I was hunching my shoulders when I acted on this and relaxed my arms the pain eased but I still get aches so I end up sitting upright like a copper and then even with a touring screen get a fair bit of turbulence which means the noise in my helmet is bloody loud. I have tried 3 screens and various bar positions but for me it comes down to how I sit on the bike, I have to constantly remind myself to relax my shoulders and arms and maybe get a quieter helmet!!
OR maybe I should mod my fazer into a chopper and fit a bloody barn door of a screen, does anyone know if there has been a fazer modded into a foot forward bike, I have looked at a few but only 70 bhp, please!!
Only a thought :b

Hi,
I have the opposite problem but many on here advise fitting renthal bars which are flatter than the original I am not too sure of the right number but I think the 754 are close to the originals so if you look on the renthal site and go for a model with less lift than those, 658 springs to mind but I could be well wrong there and hopefully someone who has fitted lower bars will be along soon to correct me and help you!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / new battery needed
« on: 01 March 2013, 08:46:24 am »
Hi folks,
Well after nine years faithful service the original battery in my 2004 Fazer 1000 has decided it no longer wants to hold charge and start the bike. It has done well even having been left connected to the bike with the Datatool 3 on for 6 months in 2008 (it was flat but after being started and a 100 mile run worked for another 4 years!)
Qn is what to get to replace it and from where, the Yuasa replacement is close to £80 which if it lasts for 9 yrs is not bad but having been out of work since last July is a bit steep at the mo.
Any thoughts from you guys who have replaced your batteries recently???
Cheers

« on: 16 December 2012, 07:37:39 pm »
Further to my post above, I will now admit that the  only time the bike has ever had a rough running time was when one of the plug caps was not sealed correctly, once I had sorted that, also changed plugs and air filter at the same time, the bike has ran like a dream; so smooth and torquey (I don't care if that's not a word, for Fazers it should be!)

Hiya,
Mine is a 2004 model and is totally stock, can't say I have noticed any delay or bogging down, unless I try to pull off in any gear above 3rd (  :D  ) but I have never ridden an Ivanised model so have no comparison to relate too. Mine just goes!!

I thought there were some marks on your bike until I scrolled down and the marks moved. Turns out the marks were on my computer screen, suppose I should clean that and the bike too - bugger!!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Ferry Discount Code
« on: 28 November 2012, 08:27:39 pm »
Have to agree, LD ferries has always been cheaper for me, even with the Britt Ferries discount.
Some of the LDlines ferries are a bit ryanair, but get you there usually on time. Also going to Le Harve is just as good as Caen for the onward trip.
It is possible if you know someone with an address in France to get a discount code for Britt Ferries which generally gives you much cheaper cabins and sometimes free meals, but LD still beat them for journey only trips. The joke is that on the Britt ferries boats I have been on they put the bikes between the large supporting posts in the middle of the ferry so taking up no car spaces and still charge you over half the cost of a car space!!

Yep, you can use the Fazer all year round but like any bike that is used over winter you will need to  wash the salty crud off of it and preferably dry it before putting it away. Oh and a decent coating of AC50 (I think thats the stuff) or similar to repel crud would be a good idea.
They are great bikes, if you go for it you will enjoy it, esp in the summer with nice warm tyres :)

fazer69 has posted pics of a very neat job he did fitting the DL650 handguards, I cant take any pics today cos its pitch dark and rainy, but I had to fit aluminium extensions to mine whereas fazer69 didn't so you'd be better off finding his photos. you can search the forum using a posters name so that would be the way to go :)

They are the standard bars, but rotated a little, the screen and the guards are the only mods on this 2004 gen 1, it has only had the pads and chain n sprockets changed the once too, still going strong :)

Suzuki dl-650 ones seem to be the guards of general choice, I have them on mine an doften don't need to turn on the heated grips, but then again if its that bloody cold I tend not to go out!!

It may be nothing to do with your prob but mine did the pulling away problem after I washed it thoroughly and put it away without drying it, turned out on the plug caps was not in fully and had got damp inside. Dried out properly and normal service was resumed.
