Hi matey.
Have you checked condition of pins in multi-plug under left fairing infill panel, caused me no end of grief till i pulled every terminal out to clean em, sorted all my starting & lighting faults. Have you eliminated the starter solenoid? Mine had an poor internal connection (corrosion) clicked/no crank, got a new non gen unit off ebay £15 posted, also starter button contacts burn/corrode & cause poor contact, i completely stripped handle bar switch gear & cleaned up starter button contacts with a small file & scotchbrite pad, painted all switch internals with ACF50 works mint now ... try bridging starter solenoid across with ignition on, if she cranks then you've likely got a fooked starter solenoid? Manual may show some resistance values to test solenoid. Sounds like you may have a few issues, but you gorra check the obvious stuff 1st.
As said above, I'd also advise remove & clean every earth connection.

I was changing my rear fender for a new one from Fowlers and I noticed a bolt sticking out the rear bodywork on the LHS. I was horrified to find this unisulated bolt wired direct to the live terminal of the bike! Why the food would someone do this? It was obviously thought about as they had wound a piece of 2.5mm red insulate ire round the live terminal and taped it up. Anyway it's off before it had a chance to short the battery out. New fender in so the battery has somewhere to sit securely at last. I'm slowly getting the bike back to standard.
The battery was originally wedged in with rags and both terminals were insulated with children's shoe insoles ffs.
It's amazing the shit some previous owners do to a bike. Just bought an FZS 1000 (Gen 1) a month ago, proper rats nest of Meta alarm wiring bodging, it' all out now thank fook, lots of hrs spent pulling every loom multi-plug apart to remove corrosion, switch gear too, bike electrics have been better, just on wi fettling the usual scabby bits, just fitted a NOS R6 rear shock from a race bike (Yellow spring too) stainless dog bones, replacing as many bolts as poss with stainless, new tyres, just painted wheels. Might drop the motor over winter & repaint it.

One of the worst garages to store anything in is a garage with an corrugated asbestos roof, those bad boys sweat and drip condensation so badly my Fazer ended up with mould spots all over it a few years ago, even thought it was covered by a cotton sheet (winter storage) The sheet was almost wet one day when I went in to check the bike. My Father-in- Laws dark green Astra got white ring marks all over the bonnet, roof and trunk lid from the asbestos roof in his garage, his car was in there for about 4 months after he had a hip operation. He had the car professionally buffed but the marks did not completely come out, it was as if something had eaten into the gel coat.
Why not Paint the inside of the roof panels with Gloss to seal in the Asbestos dust, make it brighter too if white gloss is used. Personally i use a Dehumidifier 24/7 during winter mths, (£25 off ebay) keeps my concrete garage snuff dry..

Hi.. I go thru at least 8-10 ltrs a wk at work, Honda supply fluid in 250ml bottles as Dot 4 is Hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from air) hence it will then compress in a Hydraulic system, that's why opened containers should either be used or only saved a short while. I'd advise to buy 250ml bottles, one bottle should be more than enough to flush a bikes hydraulics. I always flush my bikes every 6mths, keeps system moisture & corrosion free.

Understood PieEater. I never thought of looking in FaQ to be honest.
I'll check out FaQ next time if I need a bit of help, I usually get to the bottom of stuff without help, but it's handy to pick other people's brains especially when I'm a newbie.

Cheers for the input Tommy.
Been in garage since daft O'clock yesterday, finally found the problem Mucho corroded connections in every multiplug.
Every plug pulled apart & cleaned, turns out the fault with headlamps was caused by the plugs under the left fairing infill panel. Already sorted it before seeing Tommys reply, thanks for your info. Not surprised really, 14yr old bike, you always inherit work on any used bike or car, neglect from previous ownership etc. I bought a standard tidy bike as I wanted something fast'n'quiet for a change from my ear splitting modded Moto GP sounding ZRX1136R.
Fazers a way better bike loads more BHP as standard & it handles ok for a standard bike, after I sorted the badly setup suspension.
Defo a brown pants moment if a light failure occurred on a night ride. Glad it's happened while bike was stripped really. Onwards & upwards, cleaning/painting bits to tidy the old girl up a bit.
Next jobs.. New tyres, better levers, Renthal lows, standard bars break my wrists. Rip out all that octopus AIS bollox, block off zorst inlets. R6 shock on its way shortly, dog bones sourced. Probly fit an Ivans kit somewhere down the line, bikes quick enough as it is. Clutch cables dragging so that's to do, probly replace clutch as it feels like springs are past their best. Svc etc, mod/advance ignition rotor. Just the usual never ending stuff.
Anyway from experience, headlamp faults! Multiplug under left infill fairing is a highly recommended 1st port of call.
Loving the bike, even with all its issues.

Hi Peeps I'm new to Fazers.
Having some electrical gremlins. Just unpicked a right rats nest of Meta alarm loom bodging. Alarm had failed before I got the bike, alarm multi-plug had the usual bypass bridging wire (poorly done). Anyway alarm looms out, both of the alarm multi-plug connectors in the bikes loom under seat have been put back & bridged as per factory spec, bikes a runner.
For some reason I've lost live feed to dip/main beam & dash clocks illumination?. Could just be a coincidence that some other fault is present, but lights worked prior to removing alarm loom.
Struggling to find what the unused 3pin connector is for next to alarm multi-plug connectors in bikes loom?. Tested, I have 2 earths & a switched live Is it for accessories Any ideas pls? I suspect ignition switch is faulty? Yet to confirm. I'm just on with working thru loom. Headlamp relays test correct as per manual. Everything works except dip/main & dash clocks illumination.
Finding corroded pins in multi-plugs above rocker cover, removing male/female pins to clean. Is this a known headlamp fault based on the issues I'm having? Any helpful ideas are very much appreciated. Rgds Gaz

Big hello to all current members.
Has the bike a wk, already started stripping to tidy a few areas up. Surprising what you inherit from previous ownership. Just had to plastic weld the fairing infill panels up, some rough arse has had a go but made a pigs ear of it. My body shop yrs have paid off, panels repaired & in primer. Just gorra unpick old alarm loom, new tyres on this wk, tax end of mth then I can play with suspension setup, looks like an R6 shock is on the cards asap, rides ok, front end is terrible tho, new tyres will help, then out with the tools.

Any one got any Renthal bars (ultra lows) seem to be a favourite. Silver or Black prefered. Just bought the Fazer 1000 & it's on standard bars, I'm not loving the shape, bit keen on the old wrists.
Yorkshire area if poss.

Hi Peeps.
Not long since joined FOCU. Some interesting reading on here. Upgraded from a very modified & tuned Kawy ZRX 1136R.
In it's place is a Silver 53 plate bog standard Fazer 1000. Way better bike IMHO.
My question is, which year R6 shock works best on a Fazer 1000 & what's the correct length of the dog bones required? As I've heard R6 shocks are a tad shorter, so I assume different length dog bones will be required to bring ride height back to original. I may fabricate my own? but if anyone can recommend a supplier I'll try that option if the price is right.
Thanks in advance, any info is mucho appreciated..
