RIP

You bought a 90's kawa, that's what you did  :evil . And you are going to get a chinese thing now? That will just add another episode.

Kymco bikes (taiwanese) are still cheaper than japanese but plenty reliable. I used to have a Zing 125 (a chopper bike). Strong and fast as japanese ones.

General / Re: Popular Science on synthetic vs mineral oils
« on: 14 November 2013, 12:44:57 pm »

This is rubbish. On what basis do you presume that mineral oil can fill in the 'huge tolerances' on older engines -and infer that synthetic oils cannot? Engines do not 'drink oil' due to large tolerances anyway -it's usually wear, not the standard tolerance being bigger.
These 'huge tolerances' are imaginary anyway, if you check the tolerances on the mains, big/small ends and cam bearings on a YZF1000 you will find they are comparable with the tolerances on modern engines.
Fortunately for your brainless mechanic, modern 'mineral oils' are mostly well up to spec for our engines and for most people are perfectly good enough. Obviously if you spend time on track days or like to use all your machines performance a higher spec semi-synth would be better.
All oils are mineral by the way,  synthetic oils are simply chemically engineered mineral oils altered to perform better and more consistantly.

Yamaha's 1002cc engine burns oil. It's a fact. You can say you know an Exup or an Ace who doesn't. Also you can say you know somebody who won at the lottery.

Repsol makes a 25w60 oil for high mileage car engines: high viscosity oils doesn't goes so easily. High viscosity oils are mineral, there is no point of making high viscosity synths since that is already covered. But you cannot make a good for racing 0w30 mineral oil. Synths fill the gap.

There is nothing brainless of using a SG or SJ oil despite it is synth or not, in a bike designed for SE(1971) like ours. Even the 2012 R1 works on SG(1987).

All oils are mineral by the way,  synthetic oils are simply chemically engineered mineral oils altered to perform better and more consistantly.

I don't think this is always the case.

That's like saying we are made of food and beer

That Ferrari forum is very good read. Makes sense what the man writes.

@dr Motorbreath: I believe full synth API SM (or higher) JASO MA2 oil is better than any mineral oil for your motorcycle.

Please do not call me doctor, I'm starting mechanics studies, maybe just nurse? :lol . In fact the new castrol mineral I'm using now is 20w50 is API SJ and JASO MA2. I've also read that higher than SG or SJ, I do not remember exactly, has nothing to do to its lubricating qualities but preserving the new catalityc converters, removing some nice substances actually.

Those old FZR/YZF 1000 engines drink oil due to huge tolerances between engine parts, so everybody uses mineral for them. The text I mentioned was written by an argentine Yamaha mechanic and he said that even the R1 engines from a few years ago had very "old time" tolerances between parts. But it is the internet, maybe it was all bulls*it.

I've read on the internet a couple of guys who say they are mechanics telling that they have received advise from Yamaha and Honda to employ just mineral oil even on newer R1 or R6, and just mineral or semi for CBR. I do not remember where and they were at spanish and argentina sites anyway.
Every mechanic recommends mineral on my Thunderace, it seems to transform into a 2-stroke engine otherwise.

Yamalube motorcycle oil comes in semi and fully synthetic. So, ?

Yeah, same thoughts for me. Who knows, maybe that info wasn't right, maybe it is just for marketing or track. But I took a look at a 2008 R1 manual and it still recommends ancient oils for it.

The alloy torque arm is on its way to improve another swingarm.  :)

Thunderace's arm is exactly the same length. I've got one for sale.

FZS1000's are longer.

They dont - not rearly as I said ive done it twice and it was big lean that anyother time would not matter as it was mainly down to the road camber if you look at my picture you can see the marks. If your tyres have chicken strips then dont worry as the bars will never touch down  ;)

Chicken strips? They are not for me, I am THAT fast :lol

As said, you need a diode tester. Also the fan and the light have different sensors, both at the thermostat housing. The smaller one for the light. On my bike the fan's one stopped working.
Unplug the wires from the sensor and make a jumper and see if the light works.

LEDs do not fuse, they are very tough. Have you tested the temperature sensor first?

I managed to drag nylon bungs twice when leaning a lot,
Yep I had that a couple of times -with the bars but was mostly due to a steep camber in the road.
I got mine from a private ebay seller (not a shop) here is the fitting instructions with product code.

It seemed like they wouldn't drag, not a solution then. Scary. They still look the best by far though.

I like astronomy.

Today I visited ESA's Deep Space Antenna 2. It communicates with deep space probes and satellites. Awesome:

Fazersharp bars are the best.

I managed to drag nylon bungs twice when leaning a lot, without hero blobs. The worst thing is that I didn't feel it, I noticed it later looking at them. Focing dangerous.

It's allowed in Spain. It is good, but if gets approved be careful with cages cutting into the lane when they are turning 90 degrees at junctions. They are used to slow buses and taxis and do not look at the mirrors or indicate often.

In fact Lorenzo said he hitted Márquez, to the Spanish TV. Not on purpose, just because he did a mistake breaking too late. In my opinion his face told otherwise though. It seems he wants payback for what Márquez did to him in Jerez.
Let's hope nothing too dangerous happen next races. Márquez should have been penalyzed in Jerez, now it seems hitting is free.

Your spot on there Dave, probably clever sales tactics.
As for making the FZ1 fell like a tourer, it's hard to believe, but the MT09 is very light, and there's not a lot in front of you when your sat on it! The seating position is very much Supermoto with your feet directly under you, and your hands quite close to the body, it's to be honest, a bit weird! All your weight seems to be on the front wheel, personally I was a bit reluctant to pushing it round the bends because it just felt odd.
And then there's the power delivery!!!!!

Lots of test units, affordable at the beginning... it looks like they are selling dope  :lol It have been said they are going to increase its price later, apparently.

Sterviest, do you think it is actually fast or it does it make that illusion? No offense to you, I'm not a native speaker and I'm not sure I am choosing the right words . I mean that many times even professional testers admit a bike goes faster or slower than it seems while riding it. I thought my new bike wasn't much faster than the FZS until my pillion almost fell off and other mates were left far behind. For example you say it seems the weight is on the front, but the pictures and "cycleergo" seem otherwise. Some people has said it has a short wheelbase just being impressed, but in fact it is quite long, 1440mm. I've read a test form an american magazine comparing it to the SPEED triple, the big one, and they said that the triumph was more flickable despite its weight??

WTF?

"Being a sub 800cc model, the MT-09 has the potential to enter India as a CBU,"

Last ime I checked, 847cc was bigger than 800. And I thought it was a 900cc, not an 850?
