Title: new battery needed
Post by: tomlinscote on 01 March 2013, 08:46:24 am
Hi folks,
Well after nine years faithful service the original battery in my 2004 Fazer 1000 has decided it no longer wants to hold charge and start the bike. It has done well even having been left connected to the bike with the Datatool 3 on for 6 months in 2008 (it was flat but after being started and a 100 mile run worked for another 4 years!)
Qn is what to get to replace it and from where, the Yuasa replacement is close to £80 which if it lasts for 9 yrs is not bad but having been out of work since last July is a bit steep at the mo.
Any thoughts from you guys who have replaced your batteries recently???
Cheers
Tommo

You can get an Yuasa far cheaper than that, but there are plenty of other good sealed leadAcid batteries out there.

- google search (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=motorcycle+battery+YT14B&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#q=motorcycle+battery+YT14B&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=jOi&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ei=3XUwUf_aK-Xb0QXavIGoDw&ved=0CAwQ_AUoAw&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&bvm=bv.43148975,d.d2k&fp=6f3ffac62cae78b1&biw=1920&bih=927)

3rd down in the list - Yuasa for £49.95 (http://www.tayna.co.uk/Yuasa-YT14B-BS-MF-Motorcycle-Battery-P8560.html)

That's a good price from b1k3rdude

I've bought various batteries from these folks - price includes delivery - it's a good price but still not as keen as b1k3rdude

I seem to need a new battery each winter. This year ( well last year) I replaced it with the motobat one and love how good the cranking amps are. Turns over much faster, and has yet to lose any power at all. Highly recommend.

The three Yuasa battery's I had in my gen1 & gen2 fazer1000's have been terrible and I had to replace them within no time...(Need to replace the yuasa one I only bought last year  :wall )

But the Yuasa battery I had in my 1998 R1 lasted me  5 years (and was still in it and working great when I sold the R1)

Apologies for hijacking an existing thread but my question is sort of related:
Just taken delivery of a new MotoBatt battery for my 04 FZS1000 and it arrived apparently all charged up and ready to go - no filling it yourself and charging it first... This may be a dumb question but do I trickle charge when not in use in the normal way? Or should I just leave it...?

My advice would be to give it a good charge up before fitting it to the bike even if you believe it has already been done ? Once fitted to your bike it won't do it any harm to trickle charge it for a few hours a week to keep it topped up (if you have a good quality trickle charger that allows charging to be done with the battery in situ).
