a bit of a noob question
« on: 24 March 2014, 07:26:35 am »
Morning all,

Advice needed on the best way to treat minor rust spots on the frame.

I've never dealt with them before, is it as simple as wire wooling the rust off and repainting with something like hammerite?

The spots aren't huge, a couple of patches around the front of the engine mounts, and also around the engine mount bolts on the side of the frame, so nothing too obvious. The bike lives outside under cover so want to deal with the rust before it takes over.

And while i'm at it, whats recommended to touch up the engine? Anyone found that secret product?

I may not know much about bikes, but coming from classic VWs I know rust!  :lol

With minor rust spots then the best thing to do is apply Kurust. With wire wool you can't guarantee that it's all off, and it only takes a small amount of rust left to get the process going again. With Kurust, it reacts with it and neutralises it, leaving you free to paint over it with Hammerite.

As for the engine paint, I've heard that black exhaust manifold paint will do the job but I'm sure others here can answer that better than me.

As the man says its vital to get rid of all the rust or it simply reappears a while later. Kurust is good & I have got good results using Hammerite Gloss Black Smoothrite(NOT the HAMMERED finish variant) Favourite rust spots on the frame are front engine mounting assembly and centre stand which if ignored will eventually make it difficult to get bike on stand & finally collapse with embarrassing/expensive consequences! :eek

By the way I don't work for Hammerite, it just sounds like I do.  :D

And if you are the OCD type like me then a good spray of the frame, engine, electrics with GT85 or ACF 50 will help prevent future issues with the tin worm

Brill thanks for all the advice guys, great as per usual!

I'll go get the gear and get ready to start painting it up when the weather gets better and while the fairing is off for spraying.
