Note:-
The specs for the exhaust valves is 0.21 to 0.30 not 0.21 to 0.25 as stated in the Yamaha service manual and the Haynes manual.

What!!?? Is that right??? Where does that come from if Yamaha and Haynes say .21 to .25? Not that I doubt you... but...

I only have one outside spec and that gap is too small so it needs doing anyway.

Great idea to swap them round though - none of the others need doing but a swap could avoid the need to get a new one and even out the gaps across all the valves.

If I do still need a specific 0.01 multiple I guess I'll call the dealers in the area - the bikes roll off the production line with 0.01 multiples so I guess the dealers will have accumulated them as they do services...

But I'll look at a swap first, thanks unfazed.

Alternatively, does anyone have a 1.89 they don't need?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Where can I get valve shims in 0.01mm increments?
« on: 15 November 2015, 10:00:51 pm »
Hi there,

Does anyone know where I can order valve shims in 0.01 increments rather than the 0.05 increments you get on most sites? The acceptable range is 0.04mm (0.21 to 0.25) so ordering a 0.05 smaller shim will take me from just under tolerance to almost over.

Cheers,
Dave

Wow. Well, thanks to all of you - so many options!

Thanks particularly for the links - makes it almost a two-click job... apart from all the rubbing, scraping, wiping...

Think I'll play with the wire wool and wet & dry until it looks reasonable and then bang some Simoniz on it. Then when it looks sh1t I'll ask you how much you'd want to do it properly, bluclot :-)

Dave

Ha, I should know by now not post to the Intro section without a photo!

Well, it turns out that I aint taken no photos of her since I bought her!! So here's one from the day I bought her.

She aint changed much except the rad end covers were peeling so I sprayed them up black (which I think looks much better anyway).

And I changed the badly dented tank for a good used one off eBay.

She currently has her tank, rad, valve cover etc off for a service.

I realised she needed a service coz she developed a slight mis-fire under load conditions.

I'm also hoping the service will cure a very weird thing I used to get which I wonder if anyone has heard of before: under low load (light acceleration) at low revs, I would hit a patch of rough power delivery which made the power train vibrate/resonate very noticeably, like the slack in the primary drive and/or final drive was flapping about. Kinda hard to describe the sound but it was like a heavy juddering. The actual power delivery was still good and smooth but it just made this strange noise like the chain/s slapping about a bit.

Is that a common thing?

When I change the spark plugs I noticed that #2 had been running a bit rich so I'm hoping it was just that cylinder flooding and causing the rough delivery and this service will clean it all up. It'll be interesting to see what the carb synching says about the current carb balance...

Cheers,
Dave

Hello from Suffolk!

I have a lovely 2001 FZS1000 in really nice condition which I bought a few years ago for £1,600 - bargain!

It had a badly dented tank covered in a Baglux cover - sold that on eBay and bought a good tank for £100 or so - job's a good 'un!!

I tarted up the plastic radiator end covers (replaced peeling silver paint with black) and the bike's very presentable.

Hoping to find loads of expert advice on here for any future jobs. The first job is to respray the valve cover - any advice much appreciated!

Cheers,
Dave

Hi,

I'm doing a major service and when I got the valve cover off I realised that the paint is all coming away - currently it's just bubbling away on the top where it doesn't show but obviously, it'll creep round to the ends and start to look really bad.

So I thought I'd respray it but don't know where to start - what material is it made of? Aluminium? Some exotic magnesium alloy?

And what's the right way to spray it - some special primer?

Obviously it'll need preparing well as it'll be badly corroded where the paint is bubbling up. I'd plan to attack that with wire brush attachments on an angle grinder unless the alloy is too soft???

Also, is there anyone who reconditions these that anyone can recommend? If he's cheap it might be worth it...

Cheers!!
Dave
