General / UK Border farce
« on: 01 July 2013, 01:54:33 pm »
or whatever they are calling themselves today. What a bloody joke.

Flew back from the eldest sons rugby tour last night (another very long story) and got to Gatwick at 1:20am. After the obligatory 3mile walk to immigration we find the queue is massive. Only half the desks open and takes 40 minutes to get through the feccin thing.

Surely its no surprise that the summer schedules have started and people will be arriving in the country. FFS, sort your act out.

IT was quicker for a south African travelling with us to get into MY country. It was quicker for a bloody foreigner to get in. No wonder we have so many bleeding immigrants here when they can get in easier than us!

When the fuel needle is deep into the red section, fill up the fuel tank before you end up pushing it to a garage!

Having had a bit of fun on the French side of the channel for a couple of days, we arrived back in Portsmouth last night in what is best described as a monsoon.

Only after 15 miles did I discover that my waterproof trousers were not waterproof and after getting home (another 55 miles) discovered what North Sea Syndrome really is :rollin

Note to self, get some Nikwax or some plastic pants before the next trip!

I will be enjoying the vin rouge (or beer) in Charchigne.

Off to France with my eldest for a few days abusing the French roads on our motorbikes. Should be an enlightening trip for him as he only passed his test in August and as never driven/ridden abroad.

I know it's been done before but.....

Planning a trip to the land of the garlic munchers in a few weeks but need to sort out breakdown cover. Imam sorted on my bike but my son's bike is 12 years old. Who is the best (cheapest) company to go with for older bikes?

I had put off changing the plugs on the Mrs car until today as they were a bit tight to get out (rusted!)
Having got them out and the new ones in I stated the car eventually and it is running like shite. Check engine light is on too.

Fec. Should have paid Ford to do it in the first place I think.

General / Car Insurance
« on: 28 September 2012, 04:44:08 pm »
Just been on Compare The Market to get a quote for my car as the insurance is due next month and got a reasonable quote so I thought I would see what it costs to add my eldest to the policy. He is 18 in December and passed his test at the begining of August so knew it would add a bit to the policy price but wasnt prepared for what they quoted.

Cheapest of the three that would quote - £15,000!
Most expensive of the three?? £45,000!!!

General / European Breakdown cover
« on: 24 August 2012, 12:10:28 pm »
In the UK I have 3 different break down policies (bank, personal and warranty) covering the car but none of them cover Europe. Looking to get european cover for the car but ideally personal coverage rather than naming a specific vehicle as over the next 12 months I will be travelling in 2 or more cars and the bike to france but dont want to take out policies for each vehicle.
I know RAC do the policy where for £5 I can change the vehicle each time but would rather just have a policy I dont need to think about.

Any suggestions?

General / Test rides with restricted licence
« on: 09 April 2012, 08:50:39 pm »
My eldest is convinced he will pass his bike test this summer. At 17 he can only do he restricted (125) test and be limited for two years to 33bhp. He is also convinced he wants a bigger bike with a restrictor kit. How would he get a test ride though on a bike as the dealers would not fit  a restrictor kit just or a test ride. That's if hey let a 17yr old out at all!

General / University open days
« on: 26 March 2012, 01:49:22 pm »
The eldest son is nearly half way through his A levels now :eek and is now contemplating which Uni's he would like to attend to study Marine Biology and/or Oceanography. It seems the better ones at the moment are
Plymouth - feccin midweek open day and only 250 miles from home
Portsmouth - another midweek open day but only 60 miles from home
Southampton - Friday open day
Bangor (I know it is in feccin Wales!) 300 miles from home.

Trouble with all of these is they are all within a 2 week period with Southampton and Bangor on consecutive bloody days. Looks like my car (and credit card) are going to get a bashing in early July then. Just hope the start/finish times each day are not too early/late. The journeys themselves I dont mind, the longest trek is about 300 miles (about 1200 in total) but I would like to get some sleep as I still have to work on the other days :pokefun

General / Mobile phones
« on: 02 March 2012, 02:08:55 pm »
I have the Samsung Galaxy S at the moment. Phone works well most of the time apart from teh occasional lock up which is probably more related to keeping it in my pocket. The problem is network coverage. I am with 3 and most of the time this is OK but I stay regularly at a hotel in Huntingdon where there is fec all signal on 3 (my phone) or Orange (works phone) so looking to move to O2 (vodafone on works dongle is crap too).
Should I just go for a SIM only contract and keep the Galaxy S or get a new phone?

Been looking at the Galaxy S2, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S but cant make up my mind. I do use the Wifi Hotspot thing for laptop/iPad access that the Android phones have so if iPhones dont do this, they are out of the mix. Any suggestions?
