FZS600 Fazer / Front Brake judder
« on: 27 August 2015, 03:35:56 pm »
Hi all,

This might be a bit of a read so stay with me! I've done the usual searches but not come up with much to help me. The bike is a 2002 fzs600 with 30k milesish.

The problem is a pulse through the front brake lever while applying the brakes, it happens at all speeds and appears to be once every rotation of the wheel. It is enough of a judder to make the mirrors vibrate and generally be very annoying while riding. I don't use the brakes that often but even with light pressure the lever pulses.

The problem began a while ago. I had taken apart the front end of the bike for various reasons, cleaning, upgrading etc. There was no pulse before I took it apart. While the bike was in bits I: had the front wheel powder coated, lightly sanded and painted the forks myself, fitted new bearings in the wheel and new sbs ceramic pads in the calipers. I reused the standard discs. Not long after I had it back on the road I noticed the pulse through the lever and it has been driving me a bit mad...

So things I have already done to try and solve it are:

1) made sure the mating surface for the disc carriers to the hub of the wheel were sanded/filed smooth to remove any uneven paint from the powder coating process

2) fitted brand new front discs, pads, braided brake lines to replace the original rubber ones, new fluid, new seals in the calipers and all pistons cleaned up/polished/red rubber greased and moving freely.

The pads in the left hand caliper have very small movement backwards and forwards in the caliper and by this I mean very small amount of movement but with the front of the bike jacked up off the floor if you turn the wheel back and forth then you can just hear the pads move slightly. You can also see on the inside on the caliper where the pads have worn a very slight channel into it. I have found a link to an old thread on the old site about how to modify the spring retainer for the pads to make them sit hard against the front edge of the caliper to eliminate this movement and will probably try that tomorrow.

When the front wheel is off the ground then there is a little bit of resistance from the pads as expected but there does seem to be a slightly tighter spot... Warped discs I hear you say... but how when they are brand new and when the problem was the same before with the original discs..

So the next things to try are:

1) pad retaining spring mod
2) Tomorrow I am going to tie one caliper out of the way at a time and take it for a small run to see which side the problem is on or if it is both sides that cause it to pulse.
3) Remove forks and use a file to make sure caliper mounting points are completely level and that when I painting the forks I haven't put it to thick on one mount making the caliper sit slightly squint (they look fine to the eye but guess a tiny fraction could cause a problem)
4) possibly new bearings but there is no noticeable wear on them and they've done less than 5k miles, they feel smooth to turn by hand and no vibration apart from when braking

I just don't really know what else to try and can't afford to just throw money at it. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

« on: 26 March 2015, 05:37:08 am »
Hi all,

EBC organic pads complete front set (4 pads) for FZS 600 Fazer 98 - 02. Used for around 300miles so hardly worn at all. Good grip in all conditions, I replaced them with SBS ceramic pads for a bit more bite but the EBC had a bit more feel.

£20 plus postage

Can get pictures if there's any interest.

Cheers,

Chris

General / Shetland Focers!
« on: 21 April 2014, 10:40:00 pm »
Well, it finally happened! I met someone else from the forum!

Yesterday Sunday the 20th was of course Easter Sunday. The Zetland Motorcycle club had an easter egg run to three of the care homes on the island. There were over 30 bikes in all and it was a brilliant day, gorgeous weather, great bunch of bikers and doing something nice for the older people in our community.

Anyway, myself and Soapy managed to both make it on the run.

Here's a pic of John (Soapy) and myself (Chris... surprisingly)

And just to prove we do have bikes then here is Soapy next to his red fazer with my blue fazer next to it.

A great day out and a pleasure to have met you mate! I do hope to meet more of you fine people at some point too! If you ever fancy a trip up to Shetland then get in touch!!

As per title,

Selling the standard can from my 2002 foxeye fzs 600. It's in good condition, no dents, no scratches or scuffs. removed from my bike last winter, bike had done 28K at that point. Just seeing if anyone is interested as I no longer need it... If not then It'll sit in my garage and take up space.

Offers, but looking for around £40 plus postage.

I'll stick some pictures up if anyone is interested.

FZS600 Fazer / SFS Silicone coolant hose group buy
« on: 18 April 2014, 04:31:28 am »
Hi all,

This thread is just for people to put down their names for the Silicone coolant hose kits from SFS performance.

Any discussion about the pipes etc should be held in the original thread (here: http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,6189.0.html ) or it will get too confusing as to who is wanting a kit and who's asking what etc...

The kits will most likely be around £130 to £140 but I will confirm the exact price when I can. But budget for that. A colour list can be found on the SFS website to help you choose. http://www.sfsperformance.co.uk/index.asp

We need 10+ people for the group buy so please add your names below with a comment stating what colour you would like and I will add you to the list in this post.

1. emjaydee - blue
2. Tefer
3. PeeGee - blue
4. scratch it - blue
5. Jules-C - black
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

Any questions please PM me or post in the other thread.

For those who haven't seen them this is what they look like on my bike:

Thanks,

General / Insurance renewal
« on: 27 January 2014, 12:50:15 pm »
So, just had the insurance renewal quote through from Bennets for the fzs600... They quoted me £250, I had a look around online and found it for quite a lot cheaper so phoned and suddenly they can do it for £213, still too much I said so looked around again and got the same cover from Bike sure for £144!!

I'm 26, fully comp, 4 years NCB, covers me to ride other bikes 3rd party, all mods declared, legal cover and helmet and leather cover. Very helpful on the phone and it was a uk call centre which is definitely a good thing.

Always worth phoning when you get a renewal quote as they can always do it cheaper!

FZS600 Fazer / Front discs and disc bolts
« on: 22 January 2014, 12:04:38 pm »
Well hello all!

Front discs need replaced as one of them is a bit warped. While replacing them I was wondering about replacing the disc bolts too as they're notoriously bad for rounding off seeing as they're made of cheese.

The discs I was thinking to go for are the Armstrong wavy ones: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350974802188 I know a few of the guys on here are running these discs, any thoughts on them, do they last ok, not rust up etc

The disc bolts I was looking at are these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400470035998?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 at £46.95 you'd hope they would be a bit stronger than the standard bolts.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

chris

P.S. Forgot to mention I'll be using the discs with sbs ceramic pads and new hel braided lines.

FZS600 Fazer / Renthal 758 bars
« on: 08 November 2013, 12:59:47 am »
Hi all,

It would seem that Renthal 758's are the bars to go for but my question is where to get them from?

I've found some on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350920968084

and some on M&P's website: http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/539600/Bars-and-Footrests/Universal-Bars/viewitems.aspx

The ones on M&P's website have a different clamp dimension size from the ebay listing and both bars linked above have slightly different dimension sizes to the 758 bars on the Renthal website, even if it's only a few mm different for most of the measurements...

So, which should I go for/where did you get yours?

Cheers

FZS600 Fazer / dusty pads
« on: 14 August 2013, 10:10:14 pm »
Hey all,

Been for a few runs the last few days and can't believe how much brake dust is coming off my pads. They are EBC organic pads all around. They're ok braking wise, although i'm looking for a bit more bite at the front. This winter I plan on rebuilding the front calipers with new seals, hel stainless braided lines and obviously new fluid. Doing this made a huge difference to the back brake when I did that.

Should I try the sbs pads everyone likes or are they just as dusty? From my research then the organic pads are apparently worse for dust anyway so maybe anything sintered or ceramic will be better.

Any thoughts?

For Sale & Wanted / Blue silicone coolant hose kit for FZS 600
« on: 30 May 2013, 11:03:16 am »
Hey guys some of you may have ssen the "rad hose" thread in the 600 section in which we organised and had made silicone hoses for the fzs 600 by a UK based company called SFS performance. Noone else makes a kit for the 98 - 03 fazer 600 so these are quite an unusal mod for our bikes but they look awesome.

There were 11 kits made in all. Myself and Noggythenog bought two kits each to get the numbers up so that we could meet the minimum order and now we have the complete kits we are now going to sell them on.  :)   We will be selling the kits for £150, including postage, so please PM myself or Noggy and we can give you more info.

Here is a pic of the hoses on my bike, obviously the kit I will be selling is still in its bag and never been opened or used:

FZS600 Fazer / Stripped rear caliper bracket thread
« on: 08 May 2013, 07:56:30 pm »
Hey everyone,

Just refitting my rear brake caliper and one of the threads for the caliper bracket has stripped. I wasn't cross threading it and I Was hardly putting any force on it when it went (the haynes manual states they should be tightened to 40Nm but It wasn't at any more than about 10Nm when it stripped)so the alloy must have been pretty weak or at least it was on my bracket.

My question is, is this a common thread to strip/common weak point in the alloy? If not then there are plenty of second hand items on ebay. If it's a weak point then I'm not sure i'd trust a second hand one though.

I've tried retapping it with a slightly larger diameter thread size but to no avail. must just be too weak now.

Thanks,

Chris

FZS600 Fazer / New rear brake caliper seals
« on: 08 April 2013, 10:44:07 pm »
Hey guys,

Replacing my rear cliper seals as part of my ongoing winter (and now spring) mods/upgrades/cleaning/money spending...  :\

I want to replace them with genuine yamaha ones to avoid any ill fitting etc. It's not something I want to try and "save money on" if you get what I mean.

My question is where to get them. I don't need new pistons as they've cleaned up fine.

I've had a look on ebay but it's so hard to try and figure out which are genuine yamaha parts and which aren't.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Everyone,

We're organising a group buy for silicone kits to replace the 9 coolant hoses on the FZS600. Some of you may know about this already but this post is to let others know who might have missed the other thread. We now have a price for the kits and the company are just waiting for me to confirm there are at least ten orders before they begin the production process.

There is more info here, the main update is on page 5: http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,6189.100.html

If you are interested in a kit please follow the instruction in my post on page 5. We are getting a considerable discount for this group buy so now is the best time to get one  8)

Thanks for your time,

FZS600 Fazer / Tank badge
« on: 14 February 2013, 11:04:59 pm »
Hey guys,

Bit of a random question. My bike is an 02 plate foxeye. The tank has the word yamaha on the side of it (see picture) but from what I can see other foxeye's have the yamaha tuning fork logo instead. It also says in the "changes by year" thread that this changed when it became the foxeye. Has my bike got an aftermarket tank or is it just that some still had the word instead of the logo on them?

Introduction / Hello from up North!
« on: 03 February 2013, 08:30:58 am »
Hi everyone,

My names Chris and I live in Shetland. Bought a blue 2002 FZS600 last year and have loved every second of it. It's my first big bike since I passed my direct access the previous year. I have found this website so helpful and I couldn't resist becoming a proper focer! Will upload a pic or two later if anyone is interested?

I've been pottering away this winter stripping bits to clean/replace and am learning how to do a lot of work myself with help of my dad. So far i've had the wheels off and powder coated gloss black as the standard satin black just never looked clean to me, blueflame exhaust, stripped and cleaned front and rear calipers, new front pads, hel braided line for the rear, clear indicator lenses (made a huge difference to the look of the bike), black double bubble screen, K&N air and oil filter and got some nice blue LED's to spruce up the dials! Think that's most of it so far!

Take care,

Chris
