« on: 24 April 2014, 12:09:30 pm »
After many years of riding (I started in 1978!) and various bikes I had an 1150GS - which I really didn't' get on with.  So I sold that and wanted something for 'traditional' as in upright seating position and an inline four engine.  The two most popular choices at the time were the Fazer 1000 and the Bandit 12.  The Bandit was worthy but the Fazer was better in every possible way.  It was more powerful, better handling and had the edge on looks too.  It was also coming out on top in a lot of group tests in the press at the time and was Bike Magazine's bike of the year.  A brief test ride was all the convincing I needed.

I picked up a 2005 MK1 when it was 10 months and 1,500 miles old and I still love it.  From time to time I look at other bikes but there is not really anything out there at the moment that I would replace it with.  The bike suits me very well and I absolutely love the fact that the Fazer and my other bike - an R1200RT - could not be more different.  Complete opposites and each brilliant.

I have a similar set up but with standard air filter....but mine is pushing out 135 BHP.....do you think it may get better if you started bullshitting like me.

As the fuel / air ratio on mine is pretty much spot on, I doubt there would be any gains from returning to the standard filter. Either way, the output from my machine is very healthy and I doubt there is much more available without additional modifications.  Why mess with a good setup just for some extra bragging rights?  Rideability is goal - not outright horsepower.

No worries mate....I was only questioning why yours was less...that's all

And a very good question it is too - but I haven't got a clue.

In financial terms the argument for living on a boat doesn't really hold up.  A mate of mine liked the idea and looked into it a year or so ago but the costs were higher than living in his flat.  Apparently, it is the mornings that are the problem.

Ignoring the financial considerations it does look like a great lifestyle choice though.

My '05 FZS1000 runs an Ivan's slip on kit, K&N and Scorpion end can.  With the baffle in the bike put out just under 126 bhp when it was run on a dyno a couple of weeks back.  More importantly the fuelling is a near to perfect as you can get with carbs and the bike is silky smooth with a strong mid-range.

For the Fazer, Ivan's is the only way to go.

Just do it!  When my mates make similar excuses (and I am sure that some are genuine) I go on my own.

Life ain't gonna wait for you to go live it so if you want to do something then go do it.  Don't wait for others or it will never happen.

On longer trips and for touring I would not be without one.  My current on the Garmin Zumo 660 and I am very pleased with it.  Avoid the Zumo 550 though as the cradle has a design fault - it's not waterproof!!!    :eek

Hospitals should be listed under the POI's that are already pre-loaded - which will save searching by address.  You can save each location in your Favorites and then you'll have them all in the same place.  Favorites then comes up as an option on the menu.

I had an absolute nightmare with them.  It cost me over £300 to put right the damage they did to my bike during a routine service.  (Disappointingly, zero support on the issue from Yamaha)

Woking Yamaha have serviced my FZS on a couple of occasions and they have been OK.

General / Re: CCTV advice
« on: 03 March 2014, 05:08:29 pm »
Before installing any CCTV system you need to decide what you want it to achieve.  That may sound obvious you would be amazed at the amount of people that don't give it a thought and then bask is a false sense of security because they are 'protected' by a CCTV system.

A couple of examples - if you want it as a deterrent then you are just as well off using dummy cameras (or empty camera housings) placed in locations where they are clearly visible - such as fairly high up on the wall.  If you want it for evidence-gathering then the cameras need to be placed at head height in choke locations - that is locations where people have to pass by to access your garage/bike - and need to be covert.  Otherwise they will be compromised by the toe-rag trying to steal your bike.

If you are installing lots of expensive kit around the place where it will be seen it will not protect your bike and will also be no good for identifying the thieves.  It will, of course, show your bike has been stolen - which will be obvious from the empty space in your garage - but will have little, if anything, to offer in the subsequent efforts to catch those responsible.

I have my bike booked for a dyno run on Thursday.  '05 Bike, slip-on kit fitted by Mike and a Scorpion end can.  I'll post up the results - with & without baffle - later this week.

On my '05 bike;

Performance
Ivanised by Mike - Slip-on kit
Scorpion End Can - usually run with baffle in.

Others
Sat Nav Mount for my Zumo 660
Yoke Protector
Yamaha Engine Bars

That's it.  Otherwise standard although I do have a couple of different screens for it.

Will do.  The paint arrived today but I'll probably wait for slightly warmer weather.  When it's done I'll post up some before & after photos.

« on: 25 February 2014, 09:57:11 pm »
Its finally happened, the engine paint on my '05 Fazer 1000 has just started to lift.  I guess I'll be doing some research to sort out suitable touch-up paint.  The areas affected are very small - in fact too small to spray - so I'll need paint that can be applied by brush.

You cannot withdraw anything unless you are over 55 and even then the max you can take as a lump sum is 25% of the fund - once!  (The only exception to this being if you have a critical medical condition that drastically shortens your life expectancy)

You don't say how old you are but if you reach retirement age without a decent pension pot what are you planning to live on when you stop working?  Or are not planning on taking retirement?
