That is what I was hoping for, to be honest, that it will do it as it was standing for a long time and when it will be used on a regular basis it will clear itself... Will have to strip it and check the airbox whilst cleaning the filter and replacing oil. Replaced handlebars today, had some odd ones which were too long and were hitting the fairing. It's back to standard now, will test it tomorrow, seems a lot nicer. It's getting there. Few more years and it will be a nice, reliable bike... :) Yet - it shows there are some muppets out there...

Seems like it, it drips outside on mine though, haven't yet opened the airbox. This is next step whilst changing oil. Will take it for a spin today, as said, been standing for 5 years in pieces before someone put it together, I bought it and this was the first run that lasted longer than 10 mins. So I hope that it might clear itself but will check the airbox and aforementioned bolt's length. Shouldn't be harmful to the bike, I hope. :)

Hello all! New issue developed after a ride today, on the left side of the bike there's something that looks like a creamy white-ish foam dripping from under the plastic cover onto cable entry point (around the plastic clip) - looked like melted cheese but foamy.... Head gasket was my first guess, but why here plus the bike was standing for few years. Had coolant changed, coolant level now stable, no mayo on the radiator cap, nothing in oil - could it be condensation in oil breather or something? Had enough issues with it as it is, just ordered proper handle bars as someone fitted wrong size ones, sorted fuel gauge problem (wire snapped, resoldered, insulated, secured) not mentioning earlier issues...

Right, to clarify a bit. Fuel level is low, hence the gauge might be not showing it right. Checked connections and these are fine. As for the coolant level - all pipes on the bike were mixed up, I've sorted them out - credit to you guys - and it seemed fine when I was riding around home and the level was checked daily, never dropped. Done few miles about a week ago and after that journey level dropped - no coolant is visible in expansion tank, yet, as it was previously messed up, it might be the case that after draining and refilling it, it had cleared air out of the system and sucked coolant out of expansion tank (level top up should cure that) or there is still a leak somewhere. Will need to investigate that, will have the bike back home tomorrow so can write more on that then. Main thing is I can take it for a proper ride and check the level during the trip in terms of getting off the bike, shining some light from behing the expansion tank to check the level. I am bit on the mad side, but would not attempt to check the level whilst riding... :P

Checked the connection, sprayed with WD40, checked again, still not working properly, level might be low though. Problem is that I've checked the expansion tank today and it is empty. Passed (finally) MOD2 yesterday, so can finally properly test the bike on normal roads and give it a good run whilst watching coolant level. It might be that there was air in the system and it is now properly filled with coolant (well, better than it was), will add coolant to the expansion tank and see if it settles or is leaking somewhere. Feels definitely better. Will post as soon as I got any update. Will probably go tomorrow with a Divvy to the workshop and swap for Fazer to see how it runs. Ended up passing the MOD2 on my old Diversion and not the Fazer as leak (well, empty expansion tank) was spotted day before the test.

Only finished it today - swapped the 2-3 coilpack, not much of a change, but bit better. What was bothering me was that on the schematic drawing it was showing same side of coil connected to same wires, when on the bike it was connected differently on both. After Gnasher said it's polarity is marked on the case I've checked voltage going in and connected wires the proper way... This (there was hell of a difference right away) combined with draining (well, most of old fuel came out) the tank and filling with fresh premium petrol gave a nice result. Runs lovely (well, still need to clean the carbs, do oil and balance carbs afterwards, but a lot better). I've been riding around 8 miles today and what a difference... Still few things to sort out but already (finally) feels like a lovely bike! Thank you all, as I'd be stuck without your help. Much appreciated. Will see what comes next. Only annoying bit is that the latch for the seat won't shoot out, stays unlocked constantly but will take it off and investigate. Oh, and fuel gauge shows empty now - despite putting 5l or more from the canister... Never mind that, rides like never before!

Will have to strip the little bugger sooner than expected then, as for the issues with the cooling system - here's my previous post:

http://foc-u.co.uk/index.php/topic,18921.0.html

As for the plugs / coil pack - both replaced and it's still the same, guess I'll have to spend some money on a carburettor tuner - clocks or Carbtune, not sure yet - any of them better / easier to use? As for draining water from the carbs - I was told that was the problem on my old Diversion XJ600S - thought it might be the case, tank flange / water drain pipe on Divvy was blocked and on this one it has been cleaned and is free to drain water from tank cap surroundings, so shouldn't be an issue. Lights were messed up a bit, but this has been sorted (again, previous post). Getting there, although it takes time. Will check coil pack's polarity and check voltage on the contacts, just to double check, but as you've said - most likely the jets need sorting out. Learning all the time... bit slow though. Saying that, six months ago I did not know nothing on the subject of bikes and now keen to do a lot more than I'd expect, had some success even few times, so plodding on! :)

Misfire is still present past 3000 rpm, will have to strip carbs anyway and sync them, but will need Carbtune or similar and won't be able to justify it at present... :)) Seems more like an electrical issue, will swap cables tomorrow on 2-3 again, as it was, maybe someone altered the installation? It run a tat nicer methinks... Will post a photo of what it looks like tomorrow.

Right, cables on the coil packs seemed to be wrong way round, red (well, red/black) cables should go towards the footbrake side (sorry, thought this will cause least confusion), orange and white should go on the opposite. On coil pack no1 it seemed ok, as red was on the right side, but on 2-3 coil pack it was other way round. Had swapped the cables, might have been a bit better? Swapped coil pack and it doesn't seem to be better? Unless someone redo the cables and it should be wrong way round... What is the correct sequence of the cabling going into coil pack? Will try to swap them round and see. Checked the schematics and it doesn't indicate where which cable should go, thought it'd specify that. This bike is starting to really annoy me, it might be easier to strip the b*£$%rd and start from scratch... Not bike's fault, it's the muppet who's been putting it together last time... :(

PS: Cylinder sequence 1-2-3-4 goes from the clutch / gear lever side (left side of the bike), right?

Ze coil pack has landed... Quick question, though. Considering everything on this bike was upside - down and back to front, could cables going into coil pack be swapped and cause misfire? Thanks.

Coil pack on it's way, this should sort it.

Thanks for invaluable advice, it seems that 2 and 3 are misfiring - hence I need a coilpack, I suppose. Brand new plugs in place, didn't change much. Looking for 2-3 coilpack then. Will report on findings after replacing it. Anyone's got a spare laying around? :) Thanks!

PS: I'm surprised I still carry on resolving problems with it, but if I'd gone this far I recon it stays with me forever. Oil's next.

It judders and gets lumpy when I move off and will ring too low revs in, as soon as it passes 3000 it moves off smoothly, but going in 2nd uphill after slowing down can bring that as well, it seems gutless for a second, until it goes a tat faster and then it's gone. Misfire is there on tickover, less obvious (less misfiring maybe) at higher revs. Bear in mind this was a bike that was standing and half of it was mocked up, only now managed to restore it to roughly running condition. Will change the plugs later on and let you know. It might be the case (only pulled one plug out so far) that it's got different plugs, etc. Wouldn't be surprised...

« on: 05 February 2016, 10:51:56 am »
Hi all, just a bit of misfire, was there since I had the bike, was told that the plugs were done and that did not change anything. I will 'drain' water from carbs later on, but just checked the plugs and they are CR9E instead of CR8E, could that potentially cause the problem, or will it be rather something else? They do look fresh-ish, but considering what was done to the cooling system I wouldn't take their newness for granted... Also will check and clean air filter (K&N). Carb cleaning and balancing will be done later on, but for now was planning to change oil, do filter clean, plugs. Any other issues it might have? Did check the TPS and it was out, but all right now. Fresh fuel ticked. Also, it tends to stutter sometimes at low revs and in low gear - it normally happens only when it warms up, same with the misfire, less of a manifestation on cold engine. I should have start with this part, shouldn't I?

It's alive, it's aaalivee...!!!!!! Hi all, found a fuse hidden inside the fairing on the left side of the bike (pictured), insulated the green / brown wires (earth anyway, no current through them) and - hallelujah! I've got the tail lights which means that the bike is fully (I hope) operational - which means further testing it to see if there are any more bodges hiding. Hopefully not. Thanks for your help!

I should have mention this in the first place - I've replaced it with an automative bulb - slightly different as the contacts are more oval than round, but fits only one way and has two filaments. Still no joy. I thought that because if there was improper bulb fitted then there would be no continuity in the circuit - hence no light due to the fact the circuit is not closed. Will try to get at it today as soon as I'm done with all the work scheduled.

I have joined the green wires and soldered brown one to them - just checked the photo and yes, you can't see it, but I did. :) Stupid angle to take the photo though, I admit. Will check the fuses, if it comes to worst - I just need to run one cable from the headlight to the back to resolve it for now or trace it back to the origins and run it from where it starts (or should start). Brake lights are working, number plate light is a by-product of tail lights, if there should be two bulbs lit then it will be. Will try to check it tomorrow. Did discuss bringing bike to the living room for few days, until I get this sorted, but lost the vote... :))

Right, as per photos - soldered the dodgy bit, will wait for amalgamate tape to get it properly insulated, didn't resolve the issue. As for the lightbulbs - did check them, bodge is an understatement, never seen anyone that stupid (well, not never, but for a long time...)... Please see second photo. Bulb replaced, yet it doesn't work. Is there a fuse in line as the wrong bulb would probably blow it? Will check the whole thing tracing from start to finish I guess...

This will be properly soldered and wrapped in a heat shrink. A proper job will be done, I used to do mainly soldering for quite some time, yet under a microscope (well, it should be done that way, my eyes wouldn't be as bad now...  :rolleyes ). Will get some amalgamate tape as well, as been planning to get that for the past few years and every time got round doing something else, but will need it in case of finding similar bodge anywhere else... Thanks for help, checked on the diagram, seems like it is green going into black wire and that goes all the way back to the tail lights. Why black though? Odd...

I will have to re-create this as on mine there should be a little 'funnel' which is missing - apparently - yet, I'll get two pipes connected to the tank outlets and run them by the clutch cover as it should be. Taking quite a bit to get back to bog standard...

Right, will check the bulbs tomorrow, will get the wires soldered together (green to join other green and brown). This is why I've asked, I thought that there is separate bulb for the numberplate and it's an earth issue that the earth is being cut off and when connected lights it all up, but from what you've just said it makes more sense. Plus an offset pin might be in the wrong place and has no contact maybe. Will check if the voltage is going to the contacts for lights when I switch the lights on, any chance that the green wire was the culprit and was suppose to power the tail lights? Will check and measure few things and let you know tomorrow. Bit tempted to wander off to the workshop tonight...  :rolleyes :D

« on: 10 January 2016, 08:33:28 pm »
Hi guys, more pestering - this time electrical - thought I'd ask before breaking an open door... I've got no tail lights on when switching them on - front works fine, nothing on the back. When I press any of the brakes all the lights switch on, brake, tail light and numberplate light - all lit up when I press front or rear brake (this wasn't happening with front brake, but the cables were disconnected from the switch). I've attached a photo of a wire cut - it is (I think) for the double light mod - could this be the culprit? It was bastardised a bit, so can expect anything here I guess...

Just to let you guys know - did all the alterations to the pipework and I can proudly announce that it doesn't leak, rad gets the temperature after some time, so it seems that my cooling issues are sorted. Electrical part next, plus the triple tree bearing tension readjustment. Easy. Thanks again for all your help, I'm afraid you'll hear from me again! :)

Right... All (I guess) is connected right, the pipe going from the top of the expansion tank was going through the unknown (earlier) bracket and past that it was connected to the right side of the radiator. It is now connected as follows: bottom of the expansion tank to the nipple right under the radiator cap on thermostat housing, top pipe of the expansion tank is connected to the mystery bracket found earlier and nowhere else (effectively acting as a breather (which it should be, isn't it), pipe going from the right side of the carbs (small pipe pointing up from the carbs) is connected to a nipple on the right side of the rad and lastly similar upward small pipe from the carbs is connected to the thermostat housing nipple located around temperature switch and fan switch as per unfazed's post. Thanks to all of you who helped me here, glad to have this finally sorted, will test it this week providing the rain gets milder. Next on the agenda is mocked up electrics, but we're getting there. Will readjust the steering triple tree bearing as I bought the appropriate Yamaha (-ish) tool for the torque wrench. Better to get it right before starting to ride on it and mocking it up - it was completely loose, you could feel clunking when applying brake, going over potholes, etc. There are some issues, but all will be addressed. Eventually, anyway... :))) Thanks!

Right. As for the lock on the side of the bike (seat) - just needs adjusting I suppose and by not being able to fill the tank last time I tried I've found out that the spare key is not a spare key, but the main one is only for the ignition and other one (genuine) works with seat lock (which is not engaging anyway at present) and tank lock. Next thing - the pipe in question is routed now from bottom of expansion tank to the nipple on the radiator, as should be. Leaking should be gone now. Here's another problem, did look into manuals but can't find such pipe connected - pictured - it was connected from the radiator top (by the cap) nipple to a pipe on top of the carbs??? On the manual it seems that copper pipe sticking out of the carbs unit is not connected to anything, next thing it might be that I was getting coolant in carbs causing misfire.... Jeez... Pipe shown on photos below is the one I disconnected, first photo shows the location of the pipe roughly and next one shows zoomed in view of where the pipe is connected to - other end is not connected at present and I think the whole pipe should just come off altogether.

Happy New Year everyone!
