Fzs600 gearbox/selection fork preservation?
«

Ok guys so I've been lurking the forum a number ofor years and have rear some claiming their bikes have 80od thousand miles on with no gearbox issues.
So I'm wondering is there a way to prevent the gearbox going again ? My other bikes dont have the issue of missing 2nd gear. Which made me wonder about the factory pro shift star, I don't think they make one for the fzs but would replacing the spring wit has a new oe help?
Any info would be much appreciated

use the clutch and don't be ham fisted it will last forever.
Another thing to check is the chain tension. The FZS600 is very picky about how tight its chain should be. Too lose or too tight and you will get clunking etc.

For me it seems more about shift in hiGhana revs in first gear, sometimes it goes sometimes it doesn't

A better detent arm and stronger spring may help.
The FactoryPro one for the YZF600 might fit since the Fazer does share some parts, but at $188 (plus import duty) it would be an expensive experiment.

I did think that but looking at the parts manual and they both use different parts so doubt it'll fit which is a shame. Anywhere else I could get a stronger spring?

I have 87000 miles on mine and gearbox still very smooth.
A few important items which help,
Correct clutch adjustment 5 to 6 mm play at the lever to mount area
Correct Gear lever adjustment (not adjusted correctly can cause false neutrals which will eventually take out the box)
Correct Chain adjustment
Good quality oil changed at 4000 mile intervals
Motocross boots would not be recommended

You could try getting one made to order from a manufacturer like Ashfield Springs. You'd probably have to send them a (new) Yamaha one with a description of the degree of movement it needs and ask them to make a sample, say, 30% stiffer.

Cheers for the replies guys! Good to see that they can last maybe I was being to hard on it, or maybe the person before me had been. I bought it with 50k on it so will see what it's like after the rebuild. Will definitely look into the springs aswell!
