There was another discussion a while ago about a helmet with HUD.

I first saw this in Motorcycle Monthly, freebie newspaper, and it seems they're getting closer to production and shipping.

Has a lot of interesting features, including track mode, built in gps (but not nav I think?), and is swappable to another helmet.

300 quid though.

Total Bull sh1t thats what I think, and dangerous, ----------- im sorry but there is no way I want that in my face.
I know how fast im going without looking down at my clock- combo of wind blast - noise, revs and vibration --oh and how fast the hedge is going by my left eye.
And if you dont know what gear you are in then you shouldnt be on a bike
And do you see how big that thing is
A few days ago we had a debate on here about the law and putting a thin bit of tape on the visor as a sun shade --so where the heck does this fit in with the law.
And its not  haed up display at all its like having a phone 2 inch from your eyes that you will have to focus on and ---de focus the road.

Most of the time it doesn't even matter.  Other than first, neutral or 6th I don't care what gear I'm in as long as it's suitable for the speed/situation.

For fecks sake look how big this thing is
I thought it was going to be some sort of projection onto your visor like the vid. But the vid is fake, look at the screen grab where is the rest of the unit? AND it even shows it as being translucent!!

Imo they're completely missing a trick here, the information a unit like this could display is great, however, why concentrate on helmets?
I'd happily have something like this project all the information onto the bike screen, could do away with the clocks all together then and actually have a bigger display to glance at!
Some say...

Tried this at the Bike Show at the NEC. Utter garbage. A massive unit infront of your eye, obscuring your view, no thanks!

I'm all for heads up displays, but the information has to be non-obstructive, sensibly laid out and relevant

I've seen that before, think it may have been mentioned on the forums possibly?

It looks like a good piece of kit, but too expensive for me. Being a glasses wearer, I'll probably hold out for Google Glass to become more mainstream ;)

I am a bit scared by Fazersharps remark.  Been riding for 30 odd years and I don't know what the feck gear I am in or what speed I am going by the wind in my genital area ( or whatever method was suggested).

But then again apart from avoiding a tug from the law why would I need to.

So you are saying that after 30 years of biking you have not gained any concept whatsoever of your speed or have any clue what gear you might be in without looking down at your clocks.
Now that is scary

Not everyone has that sort of ability. I'm not too bad at judging speed so much but that doesn't mean that sometimes it escapes me. At the same time, I don't count my gears - I know if I'm in 1st or 6th but the others are questionable. I ride based on how the road and conditions feel

I'm sure I'm not the only one as well

Same.

Why do I need to know if I'm in 3rd, rather than 4th?  As long as I can tell first, neutral and (less important) sixth it doesn't matter.

The device in the original link is supposed to be viewed in the rider's peripheral vision rather than looking over to one side to squint at what data is showing.

The speed is shown as colour as well as number, for different roads, so it would tell you whether you're doing a speed under/over the limit of the road you're on. WITHOUT having to take your eyes off the road ahead. I think this would be quite a useful tool.

A lot of sports bike riders I know, use a DataTool's Digital Gear Indicator, which is mounted usually next to the clocks, so there are obviously many riders out there who don't automatically know what gear they're in, but DO want to know.

The same logic can be used for the speedo - not everyone knows precisely how fast they are going, hence the manufacturers are kind enough to place a device on the bike for us. The difference between 30 and 34 isn't huge, but its enough to get you nicked

You are right on the 30 -34 thing I'm not trying to say I know my speed to the exact 1mph but close enough, and yes that 30-34 can be too close to call solely with spidersense alone. So I have a small strip of red insulating tape on the 30 mark which makes it easy to see in your peripheral.

Most of us don't need one -that's why they aren't a standard part of a bikes equipment -unless you own a (1978 GSX400) In fact, all of us don't really need one I reckon.
I can perhaps imagine a need for a light to indicate when you are in top gear -if you really must wring top speed out of your sportsbike and are very worried you arn't in the highest gear, but i can't see why anyone really needs to know what gear they are in otherwise.

That's usually how I know I'm in 6th :lol

In reality though I know that 4k rpm in 6th is 60mph on the thou so that's my basis. If I'm not looking then I will usually try for 7th :P

Try riding a pan European - in their wisdom, Honda blessed the thing with only 5 gears!
