Comfort Seat / Luggage / Touring
« on: 14 May 2015, 01:56:13 pm »
Anyone done any touring or long rides? I've done tours in the past on a Honda Hornet and Street Triple, both times didn't feel too bad after a long ride but I was younger back then :-p

Wondered whether comfort seats are worth it for myself and pillion or has anyone got any cheap methods to make the seat more comfortable for longer rides?

Also anyone got recommendations for cheapish luggage, currently I have sling over panniers which work fine but wondered about a topbox perhaps?

I bought one of those gel pads, about £45 for the rider. Fits a treat and is easier on the rear than the standard seat, which I have always thought is just a bit too hard, especially on a long journey.
If you have the rack, the top box is good. I hac to buy both rackand box, quite expensive, but well worth it on a tour. You just have to remember that it is best to load it with bulky but light items as the load rating is quite low. (although within reason you can exceed this).

Can't recommend topbox etc but I'm selling my tankbag on ebay, but it ends tonight.

I had a gel pad put into the seat then later added another on top. This one and makes it more comfy https://www.louis-moto.co.uk/artikel/gel-seat-pads-moto112-different-sizes/10008405

I added a rack and topbox (the Yamaha one) and its very handy, despite looking a bit naff.

I bought a used factory gel seat in good condition,,

when in Italy in the very hot sun,, I got hot and then heated the gel seat to a very high temperature,,very very uncomfortable,,it seems the gel collects the heat from your ass,,not like foam that seems to stay cool..

I find my FZ8 is quite comfy and don't like the look of the aftermarket seats. ..what I have done in the past is buy a pair of cycling shorts to wear under my kit, the ones with built in padding. It can feel a little odd when you are walking around but it isn't visible, is a cheap alternative and it adds a bit of extra comfort when you are in the saddle for the longer rides.

+1 on the cycle shorts. Tried a gel pad on a couple of European trips and it was a waste if time, much better comfort wearing cycle shorts. Cheap at sports direct.
