My 19 year old mate is after a 400 due to his license restrictions, thought I'd put the feelers out on here!

Budget is as low as possible (I've tried to advise him against this, but kids eh!)
After speaking to him he's not so keen on off road style!

You could get a nearly new Chinese moped for £600.

Doubt you'll find a 4 for that sort of money, hold their value quite well, maybe look for something like a Diversion (check out Diversion cafe racers if your concerned about their looks) or pre Diversion XJ600. Kawasaki GPZ/GPX600,Bullet proof motors, forget the GPZ500, piece of junk.

No kawasaki's in his price range today but they do often come up around that price, even the ZZR600

Complete fabrication, I didn't make it up!

I wouldn't go for a ZZR400, wife had one briefly. Basically a a ZZR600 sleeved down - i.e. less power and more weight than the ZZR600. Was just too big and heavy. A ZXR 400 would be a better choice.

Otherwise, there's a few GSF 400 Bandits about. I've always like the look of the classic Yammy SR400's too - but these are getting a bit pricey now. The CBR or VFR 400's are often quite sought after too. For cheap and cheerful, why not an old Honda Bros 400. Also, many of the sporty 400's will still need a restricter kit fitted for the A2 license. And if you're gonna stick a restricter on it, why not consider some 500's too. A CBF500 will be easier to find and likely just as cheap.

+1   500 is the sweet spot - enough power, with low price for insurance and maintenance. If I went over 250 - I'd go all the way to 500. Honda CB500 probably.
Most things done in a hurry need to be done again - patiently.

Is he on the restricted license, restricted down to (i think) 47hp and not able to ride something with more than 2x that power unrestricted?

if so he can ride the hornet, fzs 600 and bandit 6s - there's links on both here and the hornet forum to official statements from honda saying as they both put out something like 94 hp so are eligible, and the bandit just isn't powerful enough anyway  :lol

Well, firstly I doubt he'll get any of those for £600, and the last post I read about the fzs600 on restricted license stated it was overpowered!

Besides, he's specifically asked for a 400, and as stated above because his budget is £600 tops I've given up looking for him as whatever he gets for that price is going to be trouble for someone with no mechanical skills and no more money to fix whatever wrong!

But thanks anyway bud!

The fzs600 was 95hp  by the yamaha book so far too powerful (by 1hp) to be restricted down to 47hp  under the new rules.

Other 600 's could be OK though.

Incorrect  BBROWN1664  :thumbdown

The Fazer600 from 1998 to 2003 was quoted as 95ps not 95hp  :eek

Metric horse power is less than UK hp and 95ps is just less than 94hp and just less than 70kw which puts it just inside the limit. :thumbup

Sorry to get involved and my Honda's not for sale, but about a year ago I bought an old/bit neglected CB400SF off fleabay for £580. I had so much fun over last winter I'm starting to spend some money on it. Not for boy racers I know, but does everything easy - handling OK, Performs OK, GET 54-63mpg and being a lardy old fart - that's fine by me. Bought it with 46k kms on clock and still has, for last 4 MOT's Mileage is same. But starts first time, runs like a
watch[Seiko not Rolex], light and manageable. So probably ideal.
PS:- Even Fatty me had an indicated on my old Garmin Streetpilot111 -- 114mph so can still lose his licence[that was near Aachen in Germany mind]went to Touratech whilst passing thru. Good night all. Tommy
