Click from front end

On a short trip  (Made shorter on discovering this fault) I have a slight clicking from headset under brake and acceleration


I am going to assume it is the bearings in the steering tube and get these changed unless anyone can suggest other issue I may need to address

could be the speedo sensor, they have a habit of snapping lugs and causing a clicking at the front.

Thanks the speedometer sensor went not long back.


Just been outside with the bike the clicking happens when holding the brake on and bouncing the front up and down however not when the brake is released. With the bike up on centre stand with the weight off the front wheel turning left and right also makes the click.


I am guessing this is not safe to use so need to sort ASAP


hopefully not going to have to ride far to get it sorted.

I think you're right and it's probably the s/h bearings.
One easy(ish) way to tell is to prop the front, take the front wheel off and without the weight of it you can feel notchy head bearings clearly when you turn the headstock from side to side by holding the stanchions.

It could be the brake pads moving backwards and forwards slightly in the calipers.


Mine make a clacking type sound, can't remember them doing it when I first got the bike in 2001, but they've definitely been doing it for the last few years.


I reckon it's just a bit of wear on the calipers/pads.

If it's the steering bearings you should be able to feel movement in them if you hold the front brake and rock the bars back and forward hard. It would be worth checking the wheel bearings as well because you don't want a wheel bearing failing at speed. Take the wheel off and turn the bearing with you finger and feel for notchiness. But I guess it's pads as Paul said. What brand pads have you got and how old are they?

Going with the steering bearings as the clicking is from there - not lower down and if the clicking is still there after the bearings are changed will investigate further.

my 100, 000 mile old forks used to click as the bushes inside were worn.
