Title: FZS600 Headlights keep turning off
Post by: feral kid on 26 March 2021, 09:46:11 pm

Hello, I would like to ask for some advise regarding my good old Fazer (FZS600), which for many months now  (3-4) has a problem with electrical circuit, particularly with headlamps.

Bike has installed an Oxford heat grips and DataToolDemon Evo immobiliser - which I guess may contribute to the problem

Recently it started to happen more frequently, but strangely, when I start to ride the bike for 10-20 minutes and rev the engine a lot - the headlights start working again, but later occasionally they go off (for like 30-60 seconds, when I'm riding the bike)

Can anyone advise if there is anything I can do myself, before I take it to a workshop?
I obliviously tried changing fuses already and it's still the same  :(

Is it just the headlights that go off? What about other stuff like instrument lights, side lights, indicators etc? Do the lights go off completely, or just dim? What if the lights are left on without the engine running?
Sounds like a bad earth to me.

Dashboard lights, when the problem happens, are usually either off or on (synced with headlights).
And when I turn the key, and leave it like half way turned between position 2 and 3, the lights on the dashboard often come up, sort of dimmed (and when I turn it all the way position 3 - the lights go off).
And again; the whole problem usually happens when I start the engine after at least 3-5 hours of not riding it, and then when I start it, no lights are turning on (headlights, dashboard backlight, instrument lights) and after riding it for 10-20 mins (and revving up the engine a lot), the lights usually go back on (both on the dashboard and headlamps), and stay on for most of the time, but recently I've noticed that occasionally they tend to turn off for a short time (usually for 10-30 seconds) during riding the bike but again; usually they come back on again.
Don't know what's going on  :\

Put the bike on the centre stand and move the handlebars on full lock either way to see if it's a cable issue.

Thank you, I'll try to do this tomorrow. Anything particular that I should be looking for or just to check general condition of cables?

Literally got to have a look and see if anything may have worn through, is constantly rubbing on the frame when turning, or looks like it's being overstretched. Something may have been replaced and rerouted incorrectly in the past?

Make sure the headlight plugs are pushed home firmly as well, onto the bulbs.

Thank you for advice and sorry for the late response. I checked the cables and they seem to be all fine. I'll have to check the headlights too.
Also I don't know if it could be causing problem, but the bike has installed a DataTool alarm with immobiliser and also custom dashboard backlights (both years ago and they've been working fine) - I was thinking that maybe something went wrong with either one of them.
Another thing, which I don't think I've mentioned, is that occasionally there is an strange squeaky noise when I turn the key in the ignition

Just a wee thought for you. I had similar problem couple of years back. It basically came down to a broken wire in the ignition barrel. Took a bit of head scratching to find but with a little help i found it. Wee solder and still working.
Just put bike on stand , light on and move the wires about a bit and as Darrsi says move the handle bars at same time. If the lights flicker or go out might be time to have a wee look inside barrel.

If you can get your hands on some Contact Cleaner Spray you could give the ignition barrel a clean. Don't use anything else as it will make things worse. Just spray in the key hole and move the key up/down and on/off to spread the cleaning fluid about. Wait a minute or two for it to evaporate before starting the bike.
