Anyone got a link to the Chinese ones, please?

The only two fingers I use when braking is to the plonker who made me have to in the first place!  :rollin

Thanks - I'd actually saved all that info when I first signed up here, but I had forgotten about it.

Reckon I'll do a complete overhaul of the EXUP. It could probably do with it.

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / EXUP error issue
« on: 29 March 2017, 10:13:47 am »
Hullo chaps and chapesses,

Having locked my baby away for the winter - too much salt around these parts - on my second ride after the thaw, the rev counter started doing the EXUP dance. I didn't notice any issues, so I took it to my very experienced mechanic friend, who gave it a good once over and lubed it up. The fault indication disappeared. Even though nothing was visibly wrong in the first place.

Yesterday I took it for its MOT (just 2-3 miles away) and on the way home, the rev counter started doing the 7,000 thing again. Bike still feels just fine, though.

Any ideas?

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Choke is stuck (sorted)
« on: 05 October 2016, 01:36:33 pm »
Hi Peeps,

I have a new issue with the bike, with the choke. After I replaced the handlebars the choke lever was a little stiff and only opened halfway. I assumed it was just stretched a bit, as the bars are a little wider, but now have found that it barely moves at all, such that I can't start the bike.

I took off the left hand cluster and tried pulling directly on the choke cable to test it, but it won't budge. I was about to order a replacement cable (easier than lubing) when I thought I'd just check it at the carb end and found that it won't move there, either.

Unfortunately, the Haynes manual doesn't give much info or diagrams about the choke, but I'm pretty sure I understand how it is supposed to move - doesn't look too hard, but I cant move it in any way. Tried with my fingers, then a screwdriver. Soaked it in WD40, left it for a few hours but still no worky.

Any suggestions would be welcome, if it means I don't have to dismantle the lot and clean it all up and reassemble. I've already had so much work to do on the bike this year, I really don't want to have to start pulling it to bits yet again, at least not before next year.  :'(

EDIT: Okay, it's sorted - was jammed solid with crud - sorted with a dismantling and clean up. Unfortunately no option to delete the post.

I got the job done yesterday - went pretty much as you said, Ayjay - the flamethrower I'd bought was just that - but even then, with me having to heat up the really thick left-over tab of the previous job and the rad soaking up the heat, it took a while, but once heated up, it stayed hot enough for easy adjustments.

Funny thing was, it got so hot that the glue that they had mounted the rad protector on with burst into flames, and that fell off, too!  :lol

I just burned off the remains and used chemical metal to stick it back on. Used that to reinforce the welds, too, and I'm very happy with the results. It hasn't been fully up to pressure yet, but some short running tests were successful, without leaks. Also used the opportunity to do several other under the covers jobs and give it a quick spit n polish. Hasn't looked this clean in ages...

Thanks all for the input.

It looks like the brackets on mine both broke at the right-angle 'elbow' point.

I've bought some aluminium strip from B&Q and it seems good enough for the job. I had a bike mechanic friend check it for me and he's happy it'll all be okay.

Just got the blow torch today (my pencil torch took so long to heat it up to the required 300+°C that it ran out of gas  :lol ) so I'll be doing the job tomorrow.

It's clear to me now that the holes were either caused because a previous owner had fixed the radiator at 12 and 6 o'clock only and it had just vibrated around the axis and was too close to the radiator or, looking at where the leaks are, it might even have happened when the thrid fixing point broke and may have been bodge-repaired with the putty I found.

Thanks very much for pointing that out. I hadn't looked at the photos in my Haynes in any detail, as it was such an easy job, but you're right - the fan unit I have is a complete bodge job.

One lug has been broken off (and sanded down and overpainted) on the radiator bottom right, and two brackets have been removed from the fan shroud and one added (badly!).

I was considering repairing the lot, but decided to buy a used fan and shroud unit from ebay (£28 all-in) and see if I can attach a couple of fixing brackets to the radiator. I have plenty of suitable bits in my garage - and have ordered aluminium welding rods. Never welded aluminium before, so I'll have a practice first (there are some good vids on YT covering this).

Should be able to get it all sussed relatively easily if all goes well. :)

oh - and then I'll list the fan unit on ebay (without the shroud), if no-one here wants it.

Disaster strikes!  :'(
Whilst putting things slowly back together, I realise I have used the wrong bolt to attach the upper radiator fan bracket - so I try to loosen it when....

Went like it was made of cheese. No idea if this is repairable. I have an idea for a bodge job, but it would mean knocking out a few of the fins at the top.

Just what I needed.... not.

Also - see what you mean about the shroud being a bit floppy.  :rolleyes

Edit: I ordered some Durafix aluminium welding rods from Amazon - hopefully be able to get a strong enough weld to sort it.

Well I was quite impressed with how sturdy and rigid the shroud was, possibly due to multiple coats of paint and rust treatment!

Anyway, it does fit rather tightly, so I'll leave it as is. My missus also thought it may have been a stone thrown up, but I reckon I would have heard that clattering around in there. Mind you, there are millions of the little buggers around these parts - 'gravel' driveways being the in thing these last years - at least for people too lazy to cut their grass! And as such, they are also too lazy to tidy up the pebbles they drag around out of their properties - and hence the roads being covered in the buggers! Our cul-de-sac has enough laying around to cover a beach - and they fill the drains up, too.

Add to that the road 'repairs (which we had done last week), where they just throw down a covering of tar and throw loads stones on top - and it makes it more likely than it was when I started. Hmmm.

I'll be making sure it's tightly secured - though I was wondering if a little buffer may help. Considering the temperatures, maybe not, but I was thinking of maybe wrapping a layer or two of self-amalgamating tape around the shroud.

I'll see how much space there is, without fouling anything or interfering with the fit.

*Edit: it would seem that self-amalgamating tape is normally fit for up to 95°C, so a bit iffy for this purpose...

'ey up!

I just had my radiator repaired, as it had sprung 3 holes due to "fan rubbing".

The holes were apparently caused by the fan shroud rubbing against the cross pipes - but I don't really see how, as the fan was well solidly attached.

Is this a known phenomenon (there's a big word!) or am I just unlucky? After I bought the bike, I found some radiator repair putty under the seat, and I'm wondering if maybe a previous repair had fallen out, because I really can't see how the fan shroud could have done this. Vibration? Maybe - but to the extent of wearing holes through the radiator? I would think that unlikely.

So I'm totally kerfuffled!  :crazy

Took it to local Spar (Collect+) Sunday - received an email from EastEnd Radiators this morning, saying they had received it and would be in touch.

Received another email this afternoon with invoice - repair complete!

Note from East End Radiators
Job done, three small repairs where the fan had rubbed through.

A bit mystified by the 'fan rubbed through' - but I will have another look when it gets back and probably see what they are on about. Main thing: Fixed in short order and very reasonable price, to boot. :)

Complete cost: £64.20

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Repaired and Reinforced my Inner Panels
« on: 09 August 2016, 02:48:37 pm »
I used a couple of these rods through my normal glue gun  - did an excellent job of repairing a very much enlarged, broken mounting hole, and reinforced two further cracks, after glueing together.

For the enlarged hole, I used the stuff to glue a small (credit-card sized) sheet of plastic behind the panel, then filled the hole area, before redrilling once set. It sets well hard enough for the job.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00OKDWO8Y/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

A lot cheaper than buying new panels.

oh - ignore the 1 star review - obviously didn't know what he was doing. I just gave it 5.

Thanks for the number, robbo - I'll give them a bell, as well as the ones in Glasgow.

AyJay, I just took the radiator off and had no issues with the fan removal. The fan looks really rusty and crappy - but is otherwise okay.

The radiator itself is in very good condition - just a couple of bent vanes near where the leak is, but no obvious damage to the pipes/bars across the rad.

I phoned a local repair shop and they said there is nowhere in the area that does repairs, so it's definitely a send away job (if I don't go for the Chinese option - thanks for the reassuring opinion).

At least it gives me a good opportunity to clean up the mess under the front bodywork and tank!

oh btw, AyJay - did you have to pay duty and VAT on it?

Update:

Thanks for the info & tips, guys - after some phoning around, it's off to these guys next week:

http://www.eastendradiatorsglasgow.co.uk/

They were recommended by someone here in a post from a few years ago (they do all kinds of bike radiators, including new ones) but strangely enough, the price now is the same as it was then - £45 plus VAT/postage. Totals about £65

Very helpful bunch of guys, och aye!  :)

Mine has been well holed, despite the flashy guard!  :'(

Mind you, I found some radiator repair putty under the seat, so maybe a previous repair has fallen out - in any case, I really need a replacement and I really can't afford more than about a hundred quid  :(

Otherwise I'm going to be stuck in the wife's mini-Peugeot for the foreseeable, and my back just couldn't take that!

Saw one on ebay last week for £85 (before I knew it was deffo the rad gone) and made an account specially to buy it - but it is gone already and can't find another one on there.

Ever seen a grown man cry?

I can pay by Paypal or CoD or whatever, and of course, that covers delivery etc (which I can arrange, including collection from you) if it's too far for collection in the jalopy.

« on: 06 May 2016, 09:39:20 am »
Just wanted to post the outcome here - I was desperately looking for recent info on this, so I know people may well find this through their search engine.

The handlebars are 758 model and they have made a massive difference. I can't say that the posture will be more comfy - that will vary from person to person - but the look, the control, oh boy the control is awesome!

This will probably come from the width, but at all speeds the control was very confidence-inspiring.

Took about 10 minutes to change the bars - mostly due to a previous owner having put half a ton of insulation tape under the switchgear to stop it sliding round and having stripped the thread from one of the riser bolt holes. Otherwise would have been just a couple of minutes, plus adjustment time. I know there are gaps between grips and switchgear that some say shouldn't be there - I put them where they are most comfy/reachable with my long thumbs.

I can't overtsate how good these are (for me) - so I'd say for the average chap they are well worth a try - I',m 6ft tall and 104kg. I like riding reasonably well sat up (slipped disc/sciatica and hernia are no friends of sporty positions). There is some pressure on the wrists - but as soon as you reach around 60mph this disappears. At low speeds in the twisties and in traffic, it's like on rails, but the wrist pressure can be distracting after a while in traffic. I've angled them back a bit more since, and think they might be better - I'll report back if not.

My Fazer is the 'awesomest' bike I've owned  :D and is now even more like the bike of my dreams.

My new bars are due to arrive, after a wee prang on Saturday bent the 'old' ones.

I've ridden Fazers before I bought this one - and they were very comfy in all ways. With my current bike, I'd been finding the hand position pretty uncomfy and often got cramp and/or bad aches, so I was looking at changing the bars anyway.

I decided to go for the much-vaunted Renthal 758's, though the ones at Demon Tweeks don't actually say they are 758's - they do come up in a search and are described as "
Renthal Superbike Ultra Low Bars Grey".

Anyway, going off the point here (I'm getting on a bit). I'm wondering if my current bars are standard or not - and if the ones on the last Fazer I rode were 758's.

I've taken photo's and they are very different (as attached). The top one is the current, now very bent ones, and the bottom ones are the much more comfy ones - clearly a little more straight, and longer.

Can anyone tell me at best guess?

Thanks :)

Thanks.

It's funny - I can think of nothing else since, yet the missus seems to have forgotten it already!  Nuff said.

I've been looking up the bits I need - I put "Renthal 758" in Google and it came up with Demon Tweeks (amongst others) like this:

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorcycle/handlebars/renthal-superbike-ultra-low-bars

Are these the right ones, because it doesn't specifically say they are 758s?

Also, does anyone know if these end would fit?:

Got shoved off in town this morning - with the missus on the back.

About an hour or so ago. Crossroads from single road into dual carriageway through town. Traffic lights all round.

Lady in car in front and we're sat in the single crossing road and turning right, onto the dual carriageway. We missed the previous green light, because this lady driver was crawling along so slowly and the couple of cars in front made it through green - she was really dawdling.

When the lights turned green again, she pulled away really slow again - and started pulling to the left lane of the dual carriageway, so I pull to the inside of the turn (which would be onto the outside lane in the dual carriageway) to ride past and she suddenly pulls over to this lane and I put the bike down to avoid hitting her.

Missus falls off the back and I have my leg under the bike. Fortunately, injuries are minor - my knee is purple and the skin is gone from the kneecap and my ankle is painful, where it was twisted and trapped under the bike. Gear-wise my brand new boots are ruined - toecap was ground off. Missus is a little bruised, but otherwise okay.

Thankfully, four blokes jumped out of different vehicles to help her lift the bike off me - but I couldn't stand for a while. Also, the bike is not bad. The handlebars are a write-off - badly bent. The fairing is just a little scuffed, as is the engine casing and the leading edge of the silencer. Oh, and the new mirror is scraped, of course.

The woman (seemingly of Eastern European origin) did stop and come and apologise - she was very shocked. Anyway, I have no idea who, if anyone, was at fault - but I decided to let it go. I can repair the bike and I was looking at replacing the handlebars anyway. Okay, my boots are buggered, but what the hell, you know I'm just happy we are all okay - especially the missus - all I could think of for the first few minutes while I was trapped under the bike! Thank god it was such a low speed.

I was able to ride the bike home (with the missus on the back) but the steering was, of course, well off, with the handlebar bent.

Renthal  758's are the way to go, I think.

« on: 21 March 2016, 06:32:50 pm »
Current state of affairs - I got the following from my 3D printing friend in Denmark today:

Quote
im pretty sure it can be done, as i looks like it dosnt matter if the bottom side, (the side you cant see) easily could be made flat without anyone seeing it.

That gives me a surface i can print from, and i can make the part much thicker than the original part, and if it has to be really good, then i print it in 2 parts, and screw them together....

If it will be stronger in the winters, i dont know... that had to be tested i guess.... and i would also need an original piece to make a model. a broken one would do... i just need the basic dimensions, hole positions and height....

So I'm going to send him one.

Not sure about the 'make two parts and screw them together' part - but the guy has done some pretty amazing cockpit panels, so who knows.

Thanks for your replies. I ended up using what felt right (about 6-7mm) and the bike has been transformed. I adjusted with the input end and left the lever wheel screwed in all the way, as per Haynes.

It's like a different bike now - really pleased I did this. Missus is really pleased, too, as she reckons the ride is a lot smoother now.

I was just concerned as I didn't want to shag anything up due to doofiness.  :lol

If soldily clunking into gear is normal for these, that's fine.
