Actually, having had a good look, the low bars would probably do the job, too. So again, if you have low and would like the ultra-low (and don't have a colour clashing with grey/silver) give me a shout.

I've mentioned this one before a year or so ago, but just for the hard of hearing... insurance brokers!

Just got my renewal through. It's £12 cheaper than last year's cover, but due to their £25 renewal charge, it actually ends up being more expensive!

Are these people really so retarded? So they say "Yay! it's cheapert his year!" and then expect me to still renew with them after they make it more expensive with their OTT charge?

Needless to say, I'm back on to MCN for a few quotes.  :rolleyes

What makes me laugh in addition, is that only a handful of insurers will cover the Fazer thou - yet my quotes from those that will cover it are in the £75 - £100 range. You'd think it would be really expensive if it's such a bad boy that most won't touch it, but no - it's the cheapest insurance I've ever had, including my previous GPZ500S, considered a cheapo beginner bike. It's just bonkers!

Got Renthal 758 bars and would like the mediums - anyone got the mediums and want the ultra low?

Bought mine about a year or so ago, but have only been out about half a dozen times, so they are pretty much new condition. Didn't put the grip stay hole in them.

Piccies

They are great bars but I have difficulty with my hands - I actually find my right arm goes to sleep on even short journeys and I feel a lot more comfy sat more upright (but that's no good for fun speeds).

Anyone want a swap? Otherwise they will be for sale, cos I don't want to use raisers. As can be seen in the pics, I've rotated them backwards a bit to make them a little closer, but they are just too low for me. I was happy when I bought them, but my body bits are getting more buggered with age.

So if ya want to buy the 758s, sensible offers would be considered.

Thanks for the suggestions  a few to look at, there.

I probably will try the 600 first - if I can get myself to be sensible for long enough!

I tested a Bonnie about 2 years ago, when I thought I might buy one, but after the 40 minute ride home from Webbs in Peterbohorror, I was walking like a cowboy after a long cattle drive. Also, Mrs JD didn't like it much on the pillion. Though since we got knocked off a year ago, she has flat refused to get back on the bike, so that may not be a factor any more.

For Sale & Wanted / Fazer 1000 replacement advice

Hi Guys and Gals.

I've had my gen 1 Fazer thou for about 3 years now, and I think it's the best bike I have had. The problem is that I am getting on a bit, and I have bad osteo-arthritis in my knees, as well as a double slipped disc. Being sat on a bike is one of the most comfy places for me to be - but off the bike (i.e. pushing/parking and getting on/off it) is something of a nightmare, even though it's the only bike I've had that I haven't dropped when getting off it.

So I will very reluctantly soon be advertising it here for sale - or exchange. The problem is, I don't know what to replace it with. Preferably a bit lighter, or weight a bit lower. Lower seat would be good. I'm into retro stuff - loved my old Zephyr 750 and do like the old Bandits, but I have zero idea about recent bikes - i.e. the last ten year's worth. I really dislike the styling of modern bikes, with stubby rear ends and poxy pillion pads.

I can't think of anything that would be a good replacement, so I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas. I don't know about a 600 Fazer - looks like the weight is quite high on them. I would really prefer a larger engine - 750 or up. I like to slot it in gear and be able to leave it there for long periods (a la Zephyr - or Fazer thou, :)  ). It can't be too new - cos I don't have much cash. I can go investigating any suggestions and maybe we can come up with a suitable alternative together :)

Thanks

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / Re: Battery Voltage
« on: 22 May 2017, 06:48:49 pm »
Thanks for the replies and advice. The voltages were all with the battery off the bike.

I put it on the bike again, and of course, it fired up immediately.  I went for a long ride.

After 10 days not riding, again, it started instantly - just in the garage, didn't ride it (bloody rain again!). Then 4 days later I tried again and it tried to turn over and started clicking. Same at each attempt.
Terminals and connections were all tight. At this point I decided it was time to get a new one.

The problem is, this is my second battery in the 3 years I've had the bike. OK, so the first one was in the bike when I bought it - and it had been quite difficult to start from the off, but I rode the bike through winter, too. I reckon the battery it came with was not up to the job. I just got rid of it about a month ago - shame, as I hadn't checked the spec before chucking it. My concern is that the next battery will go the same way.

I blame my wife for wanting to get a car, and then, despite promises to the contrary, refusing to get on it after we got the car :(

Actually, I blame the idiot bimbo who knocked us off it and knocked Mrs JD's confidence with it to make her want 4 wheels.

« on: 10 May 2017, 06:59:29 pm »
Having had some issues with finding my battery not able to start the bike after just 7-10 days not being ridden, I decided to do some tests.

I took it off the bike and charged it up with a decent trickle charger. After charging (in the evening) the voltage was 12.47 - in the morning it was 12.31V

I charged it through the day each day for 3 days and every day the voltages were pretty much the same in the evening after unplugging the charger, and in the morning.

I then left it for 3 days and measured the voltage each morning. The voltages were 12.31 then 12.28 and finally 12.26 this morning.

When I put it on the bike, it started without hesitation. I switched it off and restarted several times and each time no problem. I then went for a 20 mile ride, at speed, and measured the voltage - 12.42V

From a voltage point of view, is this okay?

Of course, I will monitor the voltage over the next days to see how much it drops with the bike not being ridden, but if it is not enough (it does seem a little low to me) already, then I might as well just get a new one. This battery is a Motobatt and is 2 years old.

Thanks for any help.

Yup - last time it took all day to charge up (with my decent trickle charger, off the bike). Now 10 days later, and it had less 'oomph' than last time (but I didn't measure the voltage), within 6 hours it was showing as fully charged - the charger switches off automatically and comes back on when the voltage drops below a certain point.

At 'full charge' I checked the voltage and it was 12.45V. I think it's safe to say the battery is no good.

I'll check it in the morning and check the discharge over the next week. I'm going to buy Yuasa next, as it has a good rep and a higher CCA than the Motobatt.

This battery was great for 18 months, but after a 4 month lay-up with no riding but occasional charging and starting the bike, it's a goner. Next winter if I don't ride (due to amount of salt they chuck down) I will keep the battery in the house and charge it once a week.

I am having issues with mine - but I have contacted Wemoto, who I purchased it from, and they told me the warranty is only one year. I queried that and they checked and confirmed it is definitely one year.

So, if like me you found this thread looking for info and thinking you could still claim on the warranty - it ain't 2 years any more!

Mine is two weeks shy of two years old :(

Mind you, if it's not holding charge after just two years, why shouldn't I buy a cheapo and just buy a neew one every year or so? £80 should get me more than 2 years' worth.

Edit - yup, just looky here:

Fekk me!!

Having fully charged it off the bike just 10 days ago, I went out to start it a few minutes ago and it was, well not dead as a Dodo, but might as well friggin be cos all I got was clickety-click.

Bought it two years ago (minus two weeks).

Fitted it today - but the bolts holding the valve in are completely seized and the heads are falling to bits with rust.  :(

Luckily, my grease monkey friend has agreed to do it for me in the summer. Mind you, it does seem to be okay now, moves freely and the bike seems to be working well, so I'm happy enough to wait until then.

If anyone wants one and didn't see the post in the wanted/for sale section - I got one from Tinklers of Norwich (Yam dealer) for £29.66 + 90p delivery.

None in stock = 3 days before posting, so as long as Yam UK have them if not in stock at Tinklers , you'd still get it pretty quickly.

Postage rates from other sources varied from £6.50 to £15, so tied with the fact this was the cheapest part price I could find in the UK, this was the best deal. Some places are slapping hefty profits on top of both part and delivery prices.

I actually found one on the net for around £28 in Poland (one in the US was cheaper, but who knows what extras will have to be paid, so....) but the postage was 18 Euros - so in fact more expensive than in the UK.

It's a pretty ridiculous price isn't it - but I suppose we are used to it as bikers, and moreover as UK bikers.

I'm just going to call the guys at Tinklers in Norwich, who have done a Stirling job up to now, of supplying my genuine Yamaha bits with no fuss, and take the hit to my wallet. My baby deserves it, after all, she gives so much and gets little in return.

Ahem...  :b

EDIT: Well there ya go - Tinklers have come good again! The part (part No is 2TK148650100) is £29.66 incl VAT and they charged me 90p postage! Thanks, guys ;)

I just spoke to my friend and he said it definitely wasn't damaged when he looked at it, so it's happened in the last couple of weeks. Age, I guess.

I was gobsmacked when I took the cover off today, to give the EXUP a servicing:

How the hell that happened, I've no idea. My mechanic friend adjusted it for me before my MOT and I'm sure he would have said if he had seen it was broken - and I had a look at the time, and I'm sure I would have noticed, too. Weird. The cables were extremely loose - the lower one fell off the pulley when I touched it.

Anyway, I'm guessing my only option is going to be to source one through my friendly local dealer (if he can get one). I use the official dealer in Norwich for my bits, though he isn't the closest. I'll give him a bell.

Right bugger, though!

Also, I had problems trying to set the cables. I used the guides on Pat's page, but I found the free play difficult to assess.

If anyone knows any other source of these (apart from the Nutty Professor), I'd be grateful.  :)

EDIT: £36.89 from Sutton! Yikes!

Hullooo chaps! (and chapesses :)  )

I got the bike out for a test ride and some maintenance today (see woeful story of broken ExUp pulley) so I took a few shots in daylight:

From t' seat:

from t' front:

From t' clutch side:

From t' brake side:

Widest brake lever setting (there are 6):

Widest setting, fully applied:

Smallest setting (1), fully applied:

Not much point showing the clutch lever settings - I found that as it was, on setting 1 and 2, put into gear = bike takes off! 3 is dragging. 4, 5 and 6 were okay - but further reach. So the clutch needed a bit of adjusting and testing. I'm happy with it now, even though I still can't use settings 1 and 2.

I do like these, they feel good - the brake is far better than the one I took off - which I found was actually broken at the fitting hole.

Related to this topic, I wonder how much value riders put on their Fazers for the insurance.

Mine is pretty much as described in the post above this one and I put it at £2,000

Tho I'm pretty sure I'd get nowhere near that if it was totalled.

Also - I rode one at a dealer in 2014 before I bought mine - it was an 04 bike and in pretty good condition, except a few small bubbles in the tank paint lower edge area, which my qualified friend told me were rust bubbles and the dealer said was "just" a shabby respray. They wanted £3,300 and those are the two reasons I bought elsewhere. But at the right price I'd have taken his arm off. Other than the bubbles it was a gorgeous bike, very comfy to ride and had a full set of boxes. Mileage was around 30,000.

I paid £1800 for the one I've got.

Fitted them this morning - took a few minutes and was very simple. Only needed the bushing swap on the clutch side.

I'm not riding it just yet, as the battery is on charge in the house, and it's starting to piddle down outside.

The action feels good - hopeful that they will be an improvement. They certainly look a lot better than the ones that were on it - not sure if they were originals or not. Yeah, I know it needs a clean!  :o

I was impressed with mine to start with, but come winter it all went tits-up. Just had to take it off the bike this morning to charge, despite having had a good ride on it last week.

It's not even that cold now - tho nights can be a bit chilly. I rode it about 20 miles (A17 wide bit - so pretty fast) and when I got it out for the MOT a week later it didn't have enough juice to start the bike.

I put it down to the fact that I hadn't ridden it all winter. It's the first time I put it away for that long, so didn't know what to expect (though I had ridden it a couple of times prior to the MOT) - but now I am putting it on a charger once a week, just to make sure.

Update for info - they arrived today (so only two weeks from order to delivery) and I like the look of 'em - black with red bits.

I'll post some pics when they're fitted, along with my opinion of them.

My clutch has been very stiff since I got the bike, despite new cable (and oil, of course), so I'm hoping these will make my hands ache less in traffic.

Fekkin insurance companies and brokers.

I won't go into details, I'm sure you all have had your own hair-tugging experiences. Bunch of thieving tossers, imho, of course :)

Just got my renewal as well - gone up £4 from last year (when they just took the renewal money without so much as a "by your leave...") plus a tenner "renewal fee". No claims (ever on a bike in the UK) and actually added Datatag in the meantime, and it still goes up. I don't care if it's 4p - it's just taking us for a ride. And when it goes tits-up, well we know what happens then, don't we? Yup, shit on again.

I changed bikes previously and got slapped with an £80 admin fee. 80 friggin quid! The policy was £90 ffs. The new bike was cheaper to insure (£75) than the old one (GPZ500S to Fazer thou) as well - how the hell does that make sense?

My wife's car insurance will soon be more than the car itself is worth.
