General / Re: Someone Locked My Bike?!?!
« on: 09 March 2012, 05:04:19 pm »
A couple of years back, every bike in the bike bay where I normally park for work had superglue put in the ignition, disc locks and/or padlocks.  Turned out to be a cyclist that was cut up by a biker so took revenge on any and all bikes she could.

It is still the only time I have not moaned about having a puncture in the bike and having to catch the bus in for a couple of days before I could fix it!

But Luke, does it fit if you put the whole swing arm on?  You missed half of it off  :lol

Nice work.  I'll be interested in the handling report.

Forgive my ignorance, is 47 tooth less than standard. If so, that WILL make the front come up. When I got my bike it had a smaller rear sprocket on, all suspension settings to max and it was hard to keep the front down.

Yes for me, but not a violent wheelie, just front goes lighter.

I put it down to the rear suspension working and the power is pushing the bike forward smoothly rather than the back end bouncing up and down so I feel more comfortable cracking the throttle fully open.  More throttle means more chance of wheelie!  If you accelerate at same speed, don't think it is more likely to wheelie.

If they ask you a question - answer it and stop.  If they pause before asking another question, don't be fooled into expanding your answer, just keep quiet and wait forthe next question.

Don't forget the BullSh1t sandwich.

Praise - bollock - praise
or
Agree - correct - agree
or (as is sometimes needed)
Lie - truth - lie

Get them in a good mood, break the bad news to them and then get them to leave on a good note.

They now do a compact, but it is still big. Doubt it will just fit where IS horn is.

I've got a twin air horn set up, adapted by previous owner to have compressor under the seat and one horn either side inside fairing. Even that is a tight fit. With air pressure, horn won't work over 100 mph, which does not affect me, but watch where the horns point if using air horns, should really be back and down.

If you do find a suitable solution, can you let me know.

Like you, my key can be removed with the ignition on and, only once or twice, the bike has had a fit whilst I was going along, wiggling the key sorted it.

I rang around but, although you can get a pattern ignition lock for most Yams for £45ish, I could not find one for the Fazer at all.  At the moment, the problem is not worth £150 .

I was told that the ignition switch changed when they hard wired the light on (2004 ish) so you will need to get the right one depending on if you have a switch to turn your lights off or not.

One set for the older bikes on Ebay at the moment http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-YAMAHA-FZS1000-FZS-1000-FAZER-5LV-2002-COMPLETE-LOCKSET-LOCK-SET-/200715502478?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2ebb93838e  but I'm not sure why he has not removed the ignition barrel!

Would have replied earlierm but could not remember the name of the place

You'd have thought they would have made it simple for Bikers looking for a retreat to remember!

Perhaps a little too South for you but very friendly.

  • Clocks: should I just leave them as they are? Guess I could buy those off ebay and put them on when my bike reaches 16,000 - but that's £200. I'm planning a long Euro trip on it in the summer, KM tripmeter might be quite handy![/l][/l][/l][/l]

I'd leave them.  You know it is KM.  May have a minor issue when selling, but the bike has only done 3/5 of the mileage you thought, so that's a bonus.

  • Headlights: They don't appear to dip down either side, I'll check next time I'm out at night - I guess this would have been picked up in previous MOTs.

Mine are flat too.  Never used a beam defelector in Europe.

Not sure about the removal, but if you are going that far I would strongly recommend an Ivanisation (loads of threads on it - search this site for Ivans kit)

  • Legal stuff: Do I need to tell the DVLA? Do I need to tell my insurance?

Don't think DVLA are bothered where it came from.  If it was new, just not officially imported then I don't think any DVLA records will show this.  DVLA will already know if the bike was imported as a second hand bike.
Insurance will (officially) need to know if you were asked if it is an official UK import and model (sometimes you are asked), if they did not ask, they don't need to know.

  • Value: is it worth less?

Grey imports used to be worth less based on the fact they cost less when new I think, but since the £ weakened against the € there are less and I don't know what the situation is now - but it has done 3/5 of the mileage so...

  • Ask the obvious: Should I just stop worrying about this, and get out and enjoy what is a cracking bike on a nice sunny March morning?!

Probably.  And lets face it, 104bhp is enough for the real world as long as the smell of garlic is not too much  :eek

I know it is not a stretch, but have you adjusted your gear lever to suit you?

After a quick spin on a mate's Blade at the weekend, his lever was too high for me so I had to take the foot off the peg to change down and chaing up was awkward, my thigh muscle felt tired, a step towards cramp and pain(?).

Just a thought.

I may be getting Datatool and Meta mixed up as I cannot remember which bike had which, but one or the other relates to a Datatool alarm  :o ...

on my Triumph the 'bridge plug' has to be returned to the manufacturer of the alarm to prove installation.  The manufaturer then destroys the plug (for safety).  Triumph don't make more plugs than bikes (for safety).  On ringing around, one Datatool installer said he could manufacture a bridge plug from the alarm plug, but this was not needed in the end.

Alternatively, on my 02 Fazer there was no plug and play facility and the alarm was wired in by cutting into wires.  Don't know when Mr Yam put a plug and play facility on the Fazer for alarms, but I guess after 2002.

Most half decent mechanics can (or claim to) be able to remove alarms.  Think it cost £25 to get the one off my Fazer [and it any theiving scroat is reading - before relacing it with a full singing and dancing, top of the range, super duper alarm - honest!]

I would blame the alarm/imobiliser, but then I'd blame them for anything wrong with the bike.

Could you have an imported bike and someone has changed the facia on the speedo to get that to read mph?

I don't think there is a way to change the odo from kilometers to miles without getting to the ecu.

I meant to say imported CLOCKS.  If for some reason the clocks break, it could be easier to find a set of KMH clocks second hand from an import that has been converted to MPH.

Out of curiousity, are the 2 trips and main odo all out?  I'm not sure but I guess the main odo mileage is stored somewhere different to the trip mileage.  If you disconnect and reconnect the battery the trips get reset, but the main odo does not.  If the main odo is the only bit that is on KPH you may just have a european chip or whatever stores the main mileage.

If it does turn out to be an import, is that a bad thing? It's in mint condition considering its age, rides well, etc.

No problems unless from France and still restricted, but that is not a real problem.

Actually got mine fitted yesterday.

It has all been said before how good it is. Love it.

As suggested ny Luke, the shorter dog bones are not needed. I had a jack-up kit on and the bike still turns as sharp as before, but with more stability too.
It helps the front end too, but I'm going the attack that soon, also mentioned by Luke.
Setting is spot on solo.

Thanks Luke. Another recommendation.

I really don't want to gloat but feel I must.

70k mile 10 year old bike. Exup not touched for at least 52k miles and 5 years, probably more. 2 days of of plusgas on bolts.

Bolts came off no-problems and Exup works just as in the vid and cables within operating levels.

Stroke the Fazer. :D

Thanks chaps - thought it was too good to be true that they were interchangable when the offer was made!

Fazer 1000/FZ1 corner / EXUP and pipes GEN1 and GEN2 compatability
« on: 02 March 2012, 10:20:42 am »
Firstly, sorry to start another thread on EXUP valves.

Whilst talking to a friend about EXUP valves he mentioned he has a spare (complete exhuatst actually) from an 06 Fazer, which he thinks is a fuel injected one (sounds right to me).

Would the EXUP valve from the Gen2 pipe fit my 02 Gen1?
Would the downpipes fit my Gen1?
Any other parts work stealing for the Gen1 from a Gen2 pipe?

Searched the 'net for info but all I can find for the EXUP valve is that they work differently (It seems the Gen1 has the EXUP for more power and the Gen2 for sound reasons, there is one reference that the EXUP valve is the same and the solenoid is different (but that is just from a bulletin board!).

Thanks in advance.

« on: 01 March 2012, 02:10:43 pm »
Are you running straight off the wiring for the lights, or through a relay?

I don't know what the wiring for the light is, but I would be a little apprehensive to run heated grips direct off the wire for the headlight.  I guess head light circuits will have around 4 to 5 amps in the circuit and by adding the heated grips another 4 to 5 amps or so.  I doubt Mr Yamaha put wiring large enough for double the design current rating (being tight and all that, use the minimum + a little bit) and you could fry the wiring.

Also, running fromthe battery (through a relay) will have less loss of voltage so the grips will (I think) work better at tickover.

I'm guessing mine is focced as I have no servo noise and just spoken to the previous owner who said he had done nothing to the exup (which means that is at least 6 years and 60k miles - 70k miles and 10 years if the first owner did nothing).  I guess if it was like that from when I got it I would know no difference.

BUT, I'm not getting any rev counter warning to say the exup is not working.  IS there anyway to check without stripping it down?  Anyone in Sussex that has a Gen1 with a working exup want to ride my bike to compare?

I'm going to start by covering penetrating oil over the bolts for a week or 2.  As this will be on the hot pipe, can I use any penetrating oil (I have GT85, 3in1 and WD40 at home)?  Is just spraying or covering once a day the way to go?  Anything else which may help the bolts come out?  I don't mind a mess and autosolling it later.

Any links to decent replacement bolts or does anyone know the size?

TIA
