I see Kahn is now proposing extending the scrappage scheme for 'hard working families' defined as those who claim child benefit.  it's £1000 to scrap a motorbike.  I'm probably going to send my Fazer on it's way via this route, might be an option for others.
Details end July: https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone/scrappage-schemes/car-and-motorcycle

Check the battery terminals are tight. Mine were a bit loose and the bike was cutting out.

I'm watching with interest because an electric moto would suit my needs well. Short London commute, great torque, no gears, less mechanical stuff to wear out. But range is an issue for the times I'd want to leave the city to go visiting.  75 miles claimed is likely to drop to 50 miles in practice.

We need modular batteries that can be swapped at petrol stations.

No change in circumstances.  20 years riding.  20 years no claims. The issue is living in London and the media noise about motorbike thefts I think.  E bike didn't quote with my postcode being the reason.

My Bennett's renewal was laughable.  From 100 up to £360! Insurance this year has been a nightmare.  I've dropped to TPO after seeing the compulsory excess being the book value of the bike.  Even with a 500 quid excess it isn't worth a claim due to the knock on effects on car and future motorbike insurance.

All arse.

I was wondering about my next bike and looked to see if there was much electric motorcycle choice.  I'm surprised how crap the options are!  Electric bicycles are quite common now in London.  I think I've only ever seen a Vectrix scooter twice, some Chineses heap-of-junk electric scooter a couple of times, and no other electric motos.

Hmm jubilee clip is an idea. I was thinking zip tie but didn't think it'd get tight enough.

My bleed kit was from Halfords.  I think the stainless bleed nipples might be smaller than the original ones.  Although the plastic retainer piece broke immediately! I might try putting the pipe direct onto the nipple rather than the rubber connector pipe.

Having not changed the brake fluid for ages i had forgotten just how shit a job it is.  The problem is the pipe on the bleed nipples.  I had a kit with a one way valve, but the valve needed too much pressure so the pipe was just popping off the nipple covering everything with fluid.
I got the job done by cutting the valve off and just using the rubber and clear pipe.   This was better but still feels a bit hit and miss as I never got enough flow from the brake system to actually see if there were any bubbles in the fluid (maybe the pipe diameter is too big - meaning fluid and air just swap sides inside the pipe).
note that I have stainless bleed nipples that may be more slippery / smaller than the standard FZS600 ones.

So what do you do?  Apart from use lots of water to clean the fluid off the discs, brakes and wheel.....

Closet fit is Moss, as it the real growing stuff.

Can I ask why? Are you trying to do a restore?  I actively replaced as much green cheese fasteners with stainless as I could.

I'm due too, and excess does seem to be standard at £250.

Bennetts renewal looking the cheapest - but premium has increased 25% since last year!  They want £100, without breakdown cover.

A sign of getting old is when the renewal is the cheapest option.

Frazer and I went to Morocco on our FZS600s.  Bikes were fine.  Couple of tips for you:
 - You can use the ferry to Northern Spain from Portsmouth or Plymouth.  Probably cheaper than riding across France by the time you factor tolls, accommodation, food etc.
 - Take some WD40 and oil with you.  Plus some old rags.  We were holed up in a sandstorm in the Sahara and had to limp to Gibralter with chains gooped up with sand.  (Rag is for the airbox and exhaust)
 - Morrocan police take bribes.  I was doing 100MPH and to be honest it was great value.  Luckily he left me with enough to get some petrol to get to the ferry port.
 - FZS600s take leaded fuel just fine.  No catalytic convertor to worry about.
 - Take some immodium with you 'just in case'.  The Pharmacist on Dar El Fna must do a great trade in the stuff.
 - If a backbacker guide says a hotel / hostel place is 'authentic' it WILL be a flea pit
 - Speaking French is really useful.
 - The border is shit, full of scammers.
 - The country is full of scammers - watch out for people walking in the road to try to get you to stop and buy a rock or something!
 - Their driving is terrible, overtakes on blind bends etc, so stay alert.

Have a great adventure.  Extra marks if you can get you bike stuck in the sand so you can get off and it stays upright!

General / MAG and London cycle lanes

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/londons-cycle-superhighways-make-roads-more-dangerous-for-motorbikes-a3369726.html

Lembus Opitk!!!

The basic premise I agree with: Segregated cycle lanes usually make motorcycling on those routes more dangerous.  Travelling west from Oxford Street to South Ken used to be a breeze via North Carriageway Drive.  Now I'm stuck to Park Lane or Bayswater road.  Then over the serpentine the road is so narrow I cannot filter very easily (so stay in with the traffic or take risks)

But why the hell didn't MAG stick to facts instead of then going on to accuse cycle infrastructure of bringing London to a standstill?

In some cases the cycle provision helps, where road furniture is removed from the cetnre line!

What about clearance with nobblies?  To the mudguard etc?

I wonder how the geometry compares to off-road bikes.

Sounds like the cat has managed to switch on the magnify option.  I guess windows M is the keyboard shortcut to switch it off?

Anyone else accidentally pressed cntl alt and arrow keys and ended up with the screen rotated?

Best bet would be chinatown.  Avoid on street bays as there is no respect for other peoples bikes in London any more.  At least in these car parks there are designated bays so you don't get a scooter up yer end pipe!

I wanted to travel the world on my bike.  Then after Morrocco I realised I wasn't that comfortable in Arabic type places (begging  / being pestered and the general filth!)

If you blow the house proceeds will you ever get back on the housing ladder in the UK?  Practical vs fun and all that.

General / Where to buy parts?
« on: 15 January 2016, 11:07:50 am »
I need some fazer thou rear break pads, possibly a FZS600 rear disc and some screen bolts.  Now I've not bought any parts for a long time so where does one go nowadays?

I used to use Hein Gericke in Stockwell but think they have gone.
West London yamaha have shut - not that I was expecting to use OE stuff anyway.
So looks like online - Busters are still going, but where do folk recommend?

I got my Fazer as my third bike when I was 24.  It was big enough, but wouldn't kill me on insurance.  It was a good compromise of practical whilst also fun.  I hankered after other bikes but always got stuck when thinking how they would be better overall than the Fazer.

I still have it, it is about to turn 15.

He saw the truck turning in.  He stopped and left loads of space for the truck to take his lane for the turn and get back into the correct lane.  For some reason the truck seems to decide to stay in the wrong lane.  Maybe trying to park on the right side of the road?

The only thing he could have done was to pull away to the right of the truck, BUT if the truck had turned sharply (as you'd expect) he would be in the danger zone.  I'd say well done for deciding to abandon bike.  100% truck drivers fault.  He even swung in very quickly.

As soon as buying an FZS600 take all the fasteners out and replace with stainless (Titanium for brakes), apply copper slip and sorted.

Never fit an alarm....
