400 and 600 parts that are the same
« on: 08 October 2011, 10:28:32 pm »
Here are some of the parts that I found that were the same on the 400 and the 600.

Parts That Are Definitely The Same  :)

Carb intake rubbers
Rear brake pads
Throttle cable
Clutch cable
Brake lever
Clutch lever
Radiator end covers
Oil filter
Air filter
Front fairing
Front screen
Exhaust end can and link pipe. not sure about the headers though
Front and rear wheels and tyres
Chain and sprokets
Battery

Parts That Are Not The Same :(

Carbs are totally different
Headlight unit and bulbs ae different

I know loads more parts will interchange between the two bikes but I've only put up ones that I've actually tried. If you've bought other 600 parts and they turned out to be the same as the 400 parts then add them to the list

400 seems truly exotic. Can't find a single one (for sale or show) in the neighbourhood. Guess finding 400 specific spares would be a nightmare. Pity, since it sounds like perfect bike - just a bit lighter than 600, probably less thirsty and lower taxes.

BTW, this spill check rally works! :)

it seems that not too many of them were imported into the UK. but a lot of parts interchange between the 600 and 400. if you have the part number you can get stuff directly from yamaha. if i had to get something more exotic like carbs i'd go for yahoo japan auctions. the prices on there are reasonable for most stuff. and if i blew an engine i just stick a 600 engine and carbs in it. so parts aren't too bad really

Just to update similar parts of the 400 and 600
Oil filters are not the same, even though the 600 one will fit, the correct one to use is the one from  02-05 FZS1000
All intake parts around the carbs are different as the 400 has smaller carbs,
Exhaust end can is not the same, it looks the same but the exit hole on the rear is smaller. Delkevic do an exhaust end can specifically for the 400 (check the polish ebay site)
The standard chain and sprockets are different but the 600 ones will fit, however the front sprocket on the 400 is 14 teeth whereas the 600 has a 15 tooth
Standard H4 bulbs will fit if you cut off two of the tabs.
They are a great little bike but worthwhile using 600 replacement rear shock and fork springs to greatly improve the handling.
I have a lot of info. which most people require for this bike as I have a 600 and my sons have and had 400s
As you will notice somebody has already uploade the files I created for spares and the word converted owners manual. I will upload the files for the other colours shortly.

hey pat good to see you've joined up. i'm sure you can add loads to this for people with the 400

i've bought the 400 oil filter off yamaha using the 400 part number and on the side of the box it has a list of the bikes that the filter fits to and the 600 is one of the bikes so as far as i can tell they are identical.

i also have a set of 400 carb intakes and a set of 600 intakes and they the exact same sizes. the diameter of the intake on the carb itself is the same

the exhaust can might have a different diameter exit on the can but the rest is the same and the 600 one bolts on. like i said i've only list parts that i actually bought and have put on the bike so i know they definitely fit

Hi Dude
A little bit of confusion here, the oil filter of the carburettor version of the 600 is different but the one for the under seat pipe fuel injected version is the same, which is most likely what you would have been supplied with. The FZS600 98 - 03 is much shorter than the 400 one and this is due to the oil cooler fitted to the 600.between the filter and the engine.
I had a used set of 400 inlet manifold rubbers and they were not exactly the same size. Maybe because they were knackered they did not measure up but they were close in size. However I have a new set for a friend’s 600 on order and will check them with a damaged set of 400 carburettors  I have in the garage. This will be brilliant for 400 owners because the 400 ones are over double the price of spurious ones for the 600 and I need a set for my sons 400.
Back to the exhaust, yes it does fit straight on to the 400 but it is not the same  Would hate to be a 600 owwer and be sold a 400 one. I had one on my sons for his test; he took it off again after passing. The downpipes will fit, even the exhaust gaskets are the same size and part number.
I'd say together we should be able to help many owners out there.
If anyone has a standard 400 exhaust I am looking for one.
Regards

ok pat you're probably right. i probably should have had the title as 600 parts that will fit the 400 instead of 600 parts that are the same.

if you're stuck for an exhaust just use the standard 600 one it works fine. it lines up and bolts on perfectly. i have a scorpion oval titanium exhaust off a 600 as well as the standard one and that fits perfectly too. i also have 600 carb inlets on it and they fit.

do you know if the clutch plates are the same on the two bikes? i'll have to replace mine soon

Hi DudeYou’re out of luck with the clutch plates as the 600 clutch is completely different, but a complete clutch from the 600 will fit. When removing the plates take note of where the damper plate is located as it is in a different location on the 600 especially if working off the 600 service manual. Replace the springs when replacing the friction plates. They are only about £5 each OEM and worth it. OEM Friction plates are probably £12 to £15 each. I replaced the 600 plates with OEMs as I had problems with the aftermarket ones. At Least I knew they would fit. Apparently the 02-03 fazer 600 have some different plates to the earlier models and the aftermarket kit I bought would not fit correctlyThe plates you require are: Friction plates 8 of 21V-16321-00 but this part number has been superseded by 3XP-16321-00Friction plate (damper plate) 1 of1HX-16331-00 Springs 5 of 90501-210L4 Bolts are easy to strip from over tightening, be warned.(Max torque 8Nm) Seen it so often over the years. As I said, that is great info. on the inlet rubbersI have a 600 exhaust but would like to source an original if possible Regards[/font]

cheers pat thats saved me a bit of hassle. i've already replaced the springs with oem springs but the clutch is still slipping under full throttle. the cable is adjusted correctly and the bike has fresh oil so i'm guessing it must be the friction plates. £12-£15 is a bit of a rip off. i'll have to do some shopping around

oh yeah this is a good site for oem parts incase you dont know it already http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/parts.html

Grab Rail for Fazer 400
« Reply #11 on: 24 February 2012, 10:41:04 pm »
Just recently bought a grab rail for my sons Fazer 400 from the Japanese Site http://japan.webike.net/. Part number is HA6471B. Depending on the exchange rate it may be a little expensive, Cost me €90 inlcuding postage, but it is a well made bit of kit and takes about 20 minutes to fit. Makes moving the bike around easier and adds a bit of security for passengers. Most amazing was that it took only 5 days to arrive from Japan to Ireland. The site itself has an amazing amout of accessories for all bikes.

yeah they should fit no problem. i bought a set of genuine fazer 600 carb inlets from a member on here and they fitted perfectly. from what I could see the 400 and 600 inlets are identical.

The parts are not exactly the same, the internal diameter of the 600 inlet tracts are a few mm larger than the 400 inlet tracts.. However the reason they fit is that the bolt holes line up and the external diameter of the carburettors are the same. It is only the internal diameters which are different.
The only way you will most likely notice the difference is on a dyno because of  turblence in the inlet tract and even then it would be negligible.
Prior to fitting the 600 ones (bought from M&P at a good price) to my sons 400 I measured them with a caliper. The 400 runs better now, but it was a combination of replacing the blanking plugs for the vacuum take off point and the inlet rubbers.
Again if you are checking anything around the carburettors check those plugs as they perish and crack all the way through much sooner than the inlet rubbers.
Happy riding

I've got a 400 starter cover to fit onto my 600, i've only loosely put it on but so far it's looking like it should fit fine and matches up i'm just waiting for the gasket to fit it completely...

In reply to His dudeness,  3mm, which is about 1.5mm all round. This corresponds to the carburettors which are 30mm and 33 mm. For some reason on the 400 the internal diameter of the inlets tracts of the rubbers reduces to about 27mm at the cylinder head. I am guessing that it may be to restrict the maximum speed in the Japanese home market to 180kph.
In reply to Andrew, yes all the sprocket, generator, starter, clutch and cam covers are the same.
One of the changes I made to the my 2003 600 is to replace the sprocket cover with an early 600 one. This is exactly the same as the 400 one. It has a rubber damper and internal cover. The 2000 to 2003  do not have this damper and cover. It stops the sprocket nut from falling off if thesprocket nut threads frett which in turn stops the sprocket from falling onto the threads of the shaft which can damage the shaft beyond repair.

I have a 400 and the carbs need replacing, they are proving a nightmare to find.  So can I use 600 ones? I see from previous messages they fit, but there is an internal diameter difference, which doesn't sound too good.  Or does anyone have a set of 400 carbs lying around for me?! thanks

They'd fit but the 600 ones are bigger so you'd have to try and jet them to make them work and I don't you'd ever get it right. What's wrong with your current set? Here's a set in Japan.  https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u137320988
