According to the Haynes manual the switch only shorts at about 102-108 degrees C !!!That seems a bit high to me?
If it overheats it will dump a load of coolant into the expansion bottle and probably out the overflow pipe and onto the ground. If its not doing that then it's probably not over heating but its no harm testing it to be sure.
