What's it worth?
« on: 06 August 2012, 12:58:09 pm »
Hi guys & gals.

I'm thinking more and more about selling my FZS600 commuter bike as i've had one since 2006 and looking to buy something slightly younger. So, just trying to gauge what kind of money I might be able to get.

I'll put pics up before the end of the week but here's the details: -

2000 FZS600 in black
MOT till June 2013
8 mths tax
63,000 miles

Goodf stuff

Bombproof reliability - as a commuter it's never let me down
K&N filter - just re-oiled
New plugs
New Oil & Filter
Motad stainless pipes
Scottoiler
Oxford heated grips
Fuel can
BRAND SPANKING new Michelin Road Pilot 2 front tyre & plenty of meat on the rear (also RP2)
Fork seals replaced 6 mths ago
Brake caliper seals replaced & system bled and serviced 4 mths ago
C&S in good condition

Bad stuff

Forks are quite pitted
Some scratches on rear plastics due to soft luggage bungies rubbing
A few scratches on genny cover where I was clumsy and dropped it whilst trying to get onto centrestand

The bike is mechanically sound but the bodywork etc does show it's age and the fact that it's been used through all weather. Do you think i'd be asking for too much if I was happy to accept £1000?

Thoughts on a postcard
Brace

Depends how desperate you are to sell. If you can hold out, you might get it. If you need rid quickly, then you may well have to take a price drop.

you prob be very lucky to get 1k for it but if your not desperate to sell you could try asking for  1k and see what response you get then go from there,if it does everything you need it to do and its never let you down id stick with it,you could get a newer bike and either not like it or it turns out to be un -reliable etc

Yeah i thought a grand was pushing it tbh. Looks like i'll be going for about 750 then  :(

With regards to keeping it, it is a great bike i know but i spend 95% of my time for commuting so fancy a change of bike now. It's a toughy though as we all know how much fun these bikes are but I'm going to take a punt on something different.

By the way, fecking typical but as i left the petrol station this evening it developed a misfire!! I think it knows what I'm planning and is trying to screw me over lol!!  :lol So much for commuting 'bombproof'  :rolleyes

You've just stuck £300 of rubber under it - I'd wait a bit longer. £800 is most you'll get with that mileage and probably best to take stuff like the oiler off and sell seperately

I paid £3200 for my VFR 10 years ago, i decided it owed me nothing, for all the use it had and the good times, twice to Spain, last time was a few weeks back to se Catalunian moto gp,,

Anyhow the nice sales people in the bike dealers around the country were offering me £500 to £800.  so i took £700 against my bike and was happy with it.

With all those miles on yours it will scare a few off, mine had 53000 and to me thats alot.

Good luck with the sale, learn to haggle a bit too.
I know its only the internet but they are real people ! ain't they?

Yeah fair point, it probably wont be until about mid Sept when i'm ready anyway and I ride 1500 miles a month so they would have been used a little by then.

Will see what happens then. I'd be scared off by that mileage myself so guess the type of buyer would be someone who's a bit skint and wants to buy their first bike and doesn't realise that 63k is high for a bike lol.

I'd prob get more by selling for parts but...

a) That just seems wrong when it's a perfect working machine (minus a misfire!)
b) I can't be arsed  :D

I thought of upgrading recently.
I have a '98 over 60K miles and not really worth much.

Then thought why spend a load of cash on another bike that will
do exactly the same job as the Fazer.

if its mechanically sound why bother ???

like mine has & has 74 on the clock and still go's no problems milage its just a number as long as the bike is looked after then it doesn't matter what milage it has as long as its mechanically sound
full licenses don't come in cornflake packets!

20k ragged silly or 60k ridden more modestly with plenty of oil changes.

Which one's gona make 100k?

IMO (within limits) mileage is overated.

At least You know your bikes history...

Yeah i'm leaning towards keeping it again for a bit longer. Especially as it's thrown it's toys out of the pram and decided that it didn't want to run anymore (expired fuel pump).

I'm replacing the pump and can't wait to get it back on the road, it's only been less than a week but I miss the old girl  :'(

Virtually every time you change a bike it costs more than planned.

I would think at 50-odd mpg & upright comfy riding position its actually an ideal commuter bike - what else did you have in mind as a replacement? Also, as you said, it hasn't really let you down in that time (bar fuel pump?) - engine probably good for another 25000 miles of steady use.

I would just keep it running and even line up a spare engine over the next few months. Sort the forks out & then the other rust and corrosion can be dealt with as and when u feel like it.

it'd say around £700-800 with it needing new forks would be reasonable.

You may struggle to sell as 60k miles will put alot of people off.

A guy who tried to buy mine said well it is high mileage dumbfounded i said your joking? 23k miles is high for a 10 year old bike?
