oil change - magnetic plug, oil & filter ?
« on: 26 May 2012, 08:02:04 pm »
i'm not sure when my bike last had an oil change so i'm planning to give it a treat in the near future :)
does the fazer come with a magnetic sump plug as standard ?
if not, are they a good thing to have ?
also,
i assume i can't just put some castrol gtx in that i use for the car !
what is a good oil to use ?
whilst i'm at it i might as well replace the filter as well.
what is a good make filter please ?
thanks for your help :D

dont think they have a magnetic plug as standard so you might as well get one. you can also attach a magnet onto the outside of your oil filter to attract any metal into the filter. i personally only use bike oil not car oil but there will be a load of people on in a bit saying use either so its your choice. 10w-40 semi does the job. i'd go for a genuine filter but i've used hiflo in the past and it was fine. just be careful taking the sump bolt out. make sure you use a socket not a spanner. and dont over tighten it when you're done

The book always recommends changing the sump plug washer as well but I'm not sure if everyone does that,,,

Looks like Hein Gericke are doing their oil and filter deal again, I registered on their loyalty scheme at the weekend so it looks like I'm getting their 10w 40 oil and a filter for £14.99, happy days! I'm pretty sure that their own brand oil is Motul so no problems with that.

I have strapped a magnet to the oil filter, it was recommended by someone on here.

No idea if it works, haven't changed the oil yet.
I did verify that it  DOES collect metal swarf through a sheet of steel.

FYI. Every old HDD drive from a PC contains 2 of the strongest magnets known to man.
You can barely pull-'em apart and you can get serious blood-blisters if your fingers get in the way!
You never need to buy a magnet ever again. :)

I tried to install one of the hein gerike magnetic sump plugs - couldn;t see how I could get a socket on there as the frame bars access - any comments on this welcomed!

Problem was that the thread was a lot shorter that the standard plug - and I sheared the thread almost instantly.  Might have just been over eagerness on the first go at changing the oil - but I dunno.  Ye be warned!

Luckily the standard plug being longer could still be threaded in and still holds oil back - otherwise...

JZS, thanks for the alert about Hein Gericke oil on half price offer. :thumbup
Went down to my nearest at Farnborough this morning, they were still selling at £24 for a 4 litre carton of HG 10W 40 semi-synthetic until I suggested they look at their own website. They rang the head office who confirmed it and so they halved the price at the till. Result!
Staff didn't seem that happy: whether that is 'cos they're making no profit at that price or just pissed at head office for not keeping them informed, I didn't stop to enquire. :)

Note:  the sump plug is on the side,  so when you take the plug out the oil shoots out a fair bit SIDEWAYS at first.  Have a big oil tray or do a alot of cleaning up.   :'(

Yeah, it's exciting,,, the side stand gets in the way of the container so I stick the bike up on the centre stand and slide the can in as near as it can go but an old copy of MCN under the can picks up the over spill. once most of its out I then lean the bike, still on the centre stand towards the oil container to get the last dribbles out.

Morning...

Any good places to get replacement sump washers for an FZS 600?

Ebay's got load of washers but they all come with a free bolt for £4, erm no thanks.

Cheers.

WTF? Don't know whether to be annoyed that the bargain price I paid yesterday is now way over the odds or if I should start running the car on the stuff too. :lol

It's what it says on the box for mine when I got it from HG so it's OK, I reckon.
