Your 2015 Touring Plans
« on: 31 December 2014, 03:27:07 pm »
With a move up north to contemplate next year, I don't know that I'll get to do a proper tour next year, although having said that, maybe a short Scotland trip could be on the cards.

Anyone got anything good planned for 2015?

Nothing planned yet but from here in Yorkshire Coast I like to try and to Cornwall or south west Wales for a few days once or twice in the summer. I wait for a settled spell of weather and go at short notice. Only managed Lake District a couple of times last summer so due a longer trip this summer. I did get over Hartside pass for the first time this year though   :D

All depends how things are money wise but rough plan..,

As soon as weather allows, a weekend at my favourite little campsite down in Suffolk to test my new cold weather camping kit and hopefully catch up with friends.

Early spring, Scotland camping. Don't care if it's cold or wet, I'll be ready to clear my head by then. Determined to make it further north this time, probably Skye maybe highlands.

Late spring or early summer, Spain, hopefully, subject to budget. Can't afford the santander ferry so probably camp on way down through Germany and the black forest then a few days beach holiday in cheap Spanish accommodation somewhere in the north.

Autumn, Scotland again. Nothing fancy these trips just I find the countryside/nature/camping helps to destress and clear the mind. My 2014 Scotland trip was 5 days total £208 Inc everything, fuel accommodation food beer. Can be done on a budget.

May tag along on one or more of the group rides proposed recently (if I'm welcome!) But struggling to commit at present.

Hope the move goes well Nick, once north Scotland is very close sure you'll be able to do some touring. :)

Andy

You'd be more than welcome on any of my Scotland trips by the way Nick.

Simplest I'm looking at is a couple of nights wild camping in galloway forest, checkout the raiders road I think that looks do-able keeping the bike close by and just over the border.

Mine will probably be;

Assen WSB in April. Up the same way along the coast as this year as I didn't see much as it was so foggy. Return via Germany although I've been to that area a lot. But Assen is a great place to watch some bike racing and WSB is much cheaper than MotoGP, fewer crowds too. Plenty of room in the best grandstand.

July Knockhill BSB. Up through Wales and the Yorkshire Dales.

Probably a few other BSB meetings, WSB at Donington and maybe MotoGP at Donington. I'll try to mix those with an extra few days to visit places Ive not been to before.

Fantastic! Enjoy that one.

I've been thinking of doing something like that for a couple of years but have put that on hold for the moment.

I saw the Hairy Bikers episode again recently where they went there and I'm wondering why I don't go. The scenery and food looks amazing.

Doing the Mai Hong Son Loop no doubt, fabulous. Are you familiar with the Riders Bar in Chiang Mai?

I'm booked up for a week in The Black Forrest in May. Nurburgring, Cologne and Luxembourg are all on the agenda. I have a beautiful house booked, all to myself, only 2.7km from the ring. Its the closest I have stayed to the ring. Beautiful part of the world.

Andy, the raiders road is nothing special. I did it two up with a mate who is in to his star gazing. Very popular with that crowd on account of it being so dark. It is a very long way from wild mate. You'll be lucky to get a space in the summer. Go deeper into the forrest if you want wild. There is an excellent little road off the A714 that takes you right through the woods. If you want solitude, that's the one. And its not far from your original destination.
Not quite sure what to do with my early mid-life crisis. Ideas on a post card to P.O.BOX 150...

Thanks adeejay for the excellent info.

Just looking at map now. Is the road you're suggesting the one between Newton Stuart and Straiton?

Main thing is nice solitary spot with somewhere in sight to stick the bike where it's not in the way

Will look more, good info, appreciated

Easy to find and a good place to meet other travelling bikers over a beer. I wouldn't reccomend staying there as it's too close to the 'moat' road (which becomes a noisy racetrack at night). Best to stay a couple of blocks back from the road -billions of hotels available.
Oh, I got the T-Shirt...

Possibly Northern Spain. Overnight ferry, book a suitably placed hotel and scratch around for a few days :sun

Last summer I did Norway and Romania, so either:

(a) The Italian Alps - I need my fix and miss riding the Dolomites (safe cheap choice)
(b) Morocco - would love to go on the ride on here, but the dates are wrong for me (the dreamier choice).

Haven't been to the Netherlands - properly - for a while, so might do 5-7 days in the Hague at Easter.

Santander ferry already booked for late April and some (many?) trips around the North of England / South of Scotland will be on the cards as usual; with the odd couple of nights going further into scotland, north of Glasgow.  :thumbup
