Clocks woes...

My gen 1 seems to have a problem with the clocks,not the normal one with the trip resetting either.
Engine running,turn on headlights and the the speedo and tach drop to 0, milage and trip dissapear and the low fuel and water overheat light come on..... This happens at tickover and road speed revs. Battery good and bike starts easily.
Earth problem? Any particular earth tag or connector I should be looking at?

Sounds like the common low voltage issue. Even if the battery is fine there might be too less voltage at the dash.
First check the fuse for permanent 12V.
Next the connector underneath the left inner lining and the connector at the dash. And the ignition switch connector below the front of the tank including the wires in the protection sleeving.
There is no grounding to the frame except for the starter. You might add one at the headlights. There had been some discussion around here on how to do that some days/weeks back.

I have had a deeper look at this today.
Dispute running a dedicated negative and positive to the clocks I still get the clock dance. My hunch is that its something on the clock PCB that's gone,maybe a diode or something similar as so may bike are doing it as they get older.
That being the case it looks like mine will be doing it forevermore!

My bike has a very similar problem, but either running lights or brake light kills everything (even the engine) and then the bike will decide when it will power up again.  I have to leave the ignition on and sometimes it will all power up straight away and sometimes I have to wait 5 mins before the dash comes on it decides it will work.  When it is working, it starts and runs fine, until I turn on lights or apply the brake and the brake light comes on!

I had a quick look at the plug behind the screen but all was well.
At the end of Oct the bike comes off the road for the winter when I ride my old sr500. During this period quite a lot of work has to be done, new c and s set, new tyres and a valve check so at this time I intend to pull all the plugs under the tank etc and investigate. Hopefully I will find the problem then.
