Title: Snapped exup housing bolts
Post by: Kenbob on 17 July 2018, 12:41:10 pm
hi all.
Well I’ve managed to snap the heads off of  a couple of my exup housing bolts and most of the thread is left in the housing.
For those who have been there or who know what I need to do now, what do I do now, help!!!! :'(

Patience, heat, decent drill bit, easy-out,decent tap to clean up thread...it'll be fine mate. All doable in situ and If you can't get the stainless replacement ALLEN caps I've got spares, I'll send you a set. 👍😉 btw if your anywhere near the Forest of Dean fetch it over I'll give you a hand

Thanks for the offer but I’m in croydon surrey.
Do you know the right tap size perchance and I’ve just been looking at the easy out bits.
I also have the stainless replacement bolts but thanks anyway.

With mine mate I actually ended up not useing easy outs. I drilled the bolts out slightly smaller than the original bolt so all that was left was the bolt thread, and slowly kept at it with a tap covered in grease, (m6 I think) in out in out half a turn at a time until it was. Cleaned out and on the original threads. Takes ages, but satisfying, in a weird way lol

Will give that a go but might try the easy outs first.

Buy a 4/5mm drill from an engineering shop. (Forest Fastners eh ogri)
Nice and slowly does it, then either retap or easy out the old bolts. Stainless bolts and coppaslip. Loosen them once a year and no more problems.

The most important thing is not to use cheap drill bits. Get the best you can afford, it will make the job so much easier.
I drilled mine out with a 5mm bit and then re-tapped with an M6. I took my time (for a change) and it all went to plan.

Just throwing this in here to see if anyone has tried the helicoil method, tap v helicoil, which one is better or easier even.

If you can drill and re-tap I would go down that route. If the re-tap doesn't work you can then do a helicoil.
