FZS600 Fazer / Re: What have you done to your FZS600 bike today

Replaced oil filter and plugs. I think the filter was put on by a gorilla - it wouldn't come off with a normal filter wrench - I had to resort to the old screwdriver trick - even then the screwdriver just demolished the old filter.
See also the state of the plugs, there is no electrode left!! - its a wonder it ran at all

Or get Co-pilot on your smart phone for free. If you want voice guided instructions pay them about £15.
Not waterproof and there are loads of holders on ebay - Can also place one of those zippy bags over it to make it waterproof

I did try to ensure the lugs were in the correct position. but it's not easy lining then up and putting the spindle back in on your own.

Hopefully they were aligned ok.

Cheers

just checked the TPS and it went to 10000

Adjusted it to 5000 and took it for a run. The bike ran as normal and the rev counter was ok (but was ok when I reduced the revs on my earlier ride) but speedo still not working.

Just had a close look at the actual cable and there is a nick in the insulation but I can't see that it has nicked the wire(s) inside. The cable was routed inside between the brake hose and the fork lug.

Could it be that one of the wires is broken? and would it be worth cutting whole thing open and making sure wires are connected? Don't really want to fork out for whole new speedo cable/sensor.

The rev counter just went to zero and then back to whatever revs I was doing, about 8 or 9 thou -  I was giving it stick.

FZS600 Fazer / Help - speedo/electric problem

I bought a 1999 fazer a few weeks ago and have a speedo issue.

A few days ago, the speedo needle suddenly went crazy and started to go round to 160mph down country lanes! (you should see the milometer fly by at that speed)

It would sometimes settle down and work correctly. A few days later, it didn't work at all so I took the front wheel off and both lugs had gone. Bought a new rotor and fitted it yesterday.

Today went for a ride but no joy, no speed showing. The rev counter has been working fine throughout all this. Anyway , was giving it some stick over the mountain and the rev counter started playing up going to nil and then back to normal.

The bike goes really well, starts first time and the battery seems to be charging ok.

Could this issue be something to do with the regulator/rectifier over producing a charge? or is it maybe the main speed sensor. the fact that the rev counter started to play up seems to point to an electrical issue. When the pace slowed down, the rev counter was fine

Funny enough, when I got the bike, both rear side lights and the front headlight had blown - I did replace all these bulbs and they have been fine since

any ideas chaps?

This is my 3rd fazer, and it is very smooth and does go well.

Many thanks

FZS600 Fazer / Re: FZS600 Rear Caliper
« on: 27 April 2015, 09:04:11 pm »
I recently stripped all the callipers down and the trick with a car tyre inflator worked a treat with the front ones.

The rear ones were stuck fast and I got them out by using a pair of mole grips on the lip of the piston and putting the grips in a vice. The pistons are made of stern stuff and the grips didn't bend them out of shape. Then I held the calliper and twisted if from side to side and slowly it turned. keep twisting it and eventually they came out

Cleaned the pistons and fitted new seals. They were quite tight going back in but eventually they went in and working fine now

It is only a slight notch, but will see if it does return to centre - cheers

I recently bought a tatty 99 for £650 and am in the process of getting it sorted - I have never seen a chain so gunged up with layer upon layer of oil and gunge!!!  I can actually see gold links now.

Anyway I wanted to take both wheels off  - got the back out eventually and started to take the front one off.  The spindle nut was very tight so I thought I would put the bike on the side stand and forgot about no back wheel - Pushed the bike forward and crash....the whole bike was flat on the floor on the suspension linkage. Managed to get it up back on the main stand and just hope no permanent damage. Lesson - put brain in gear

Got the forks off and turned the bars from side to side to check the bearings - it was smooth apart from a slight notch when the bars are in the  straight position - is this middle notchy feel normal ? Its only slight and I cant feel it when riding it, although I haven't held in a straight line for some distance yet

Cheers

FZS600 Fazer / Re: stuttering fzs 600
« on: 08 March 2015, 01:09:08 am »
Hello all

I have today bought a 1999 600. it has done 32000 miles and is quite tatty - I only paid £650 for it though

I have previously owned 2 x 600 early fazers, 2 x thundercats and a naked FZ6 - so I must like them!!

It has a Scorpion race can on it and I took it for a test ride before I bought it- it rides ok, but did have a stutter on full throttle. I put it down to having a race can on it and that it has been stood for a year. I plan to put the standard can back on, put new plugs in and have the carbs balanced.

I read with interest this thread and it was good Saturday night reading!!

The paintwork is tatty so was planning on having it re-sprayed professionally. maybe a current white colour?

I hope that the above work will make it run properly, but will keep you guys informed

Hi Tom
Well, you never know - I have always wanted to take bikers in at TT week. The only prob is that our house is up for sale and we might downsize, but we will see!!
It's grand prix week at the moment and there are loads of vintage and older bikes over - just been down the prom and there are quite a few.
There are races tomorrow but the weather looks iffy, so it might be sunday.
It's nice to live here and the TT course is great to ride, but you can get fed up with riding the same roads. The rest of the island's roads aren't great and sometimes all you want to do is ride for a good few miles. The no speed limit over the mountain is great though.
There is not much crime here and bikes/cars never seem to get stolen.
Cheers
Phil

Introduction / Hello from the rock
« on: 21 August 2012, 08:24:27 pm »
Hello from the Isle of Man. Although I have been riding bikes for quite a few years now, this is the first time I have joined a forum - better late than ever!!
I am a mid fifties greying rider and have had two fazers, one naked FZ6 and two thundercats - I think there must be a link there somewhere. My current bike is a silver 2000 fazer 600 with about 24,000 miles on it. I really like touring on it and recently did a track day at Donnington. It was raining, so couldn't really give it stick. The fazer  has good acceleration and fantastic brakes. The back brake not too good though and I have just had new pistons and seals put in (about £85 using proper yamaha parts).
The thundercat is a seriously underrated bike and I once rode one non stop from Brno back to the IOM. I really don't think I would have preferred to have done it on any other bike - comfy and economical. I have just fitted a SP performance oval stainless can on the fazer and it gives a really nice deeper sound. I intend to keep the baffle in as I don't really like loud exhausts. It was only about £120 on ebay or direct with SP.
There are some great tips in this site and I look forward to posting further.
