Don't fit straight to the battery, you will forget to turn them off!  ;)

Been there, done that  :rolleyes

Mine were already fitted to the bike when I bought it and are wired direct to the battery via an inline fuse, this works fine but the only downside is that you must remember to turn them off  (even after you turn off the ignition). I came out one day after work and the grips were lovely and warm but the battery was almost dead  :(

On a previous bike I took a live feed from a spare supply in the fuse panel beside the battery, which meant that when I turned the ignition off, the grips went off too - I must do this on the fazer sometime :)

FZS600 Fazer / Re: how spot on do the dots have to be the cams aligned?
« on: 02 September 2013, 08:56:20 pm »
Did this recently myself and dots on my camshafts (with new chain installed) were slightly to the left of the alignment dots on the cam holders, no issue with this for me and bike is running fine since.

Start tightening the bolts down a little at a time in a criss cross sequence from the center of the camshaft to the outside.

Keep a close eye when your doing this that the holders are moving down and into place uniformly and evenly.

Harley sportster sport 1200 - 6 month old bike.

Front brakes were pure crap, no stopping power at all.

Rear shocks also bottomed out at every opportunity even with pre load up to max, I weighed around 14 stone at the time so this shouldn't have been an issue.

Engine was the new rubber mounted model which was supposed to better dampen out the vibes from the previous models, I think I'am still shaking 2 years later!

Pulling in the clutch was unbelievably difficult and was a killer in town.

Not for me thanks!

Stripped the front calipers and gave them a good clean. Fitted a new set of EBC HH pads and a new fuel filter.

All set for a blast in the morning!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: Rear brake bleed
« on: 31 August 2013, 09:58:27 am »
With regard to bleeding, I overhauled my rear caliper recently and when reassembled, had great difficulty getting any firm pressure on the brake pedal, even though there was plenty of fluid coming out each time I bled it. Tried this for ages and in the end I unbolted the caliper with the brake hose still connected, turned it around slightly, and bled it again whilst holding upwards in hand.

Several bubbles of trapped air came out and the pressure at the pedal was fine.

Just mentioning as may be useful to someone if they are having the same issue.

« on: 23 August 2013, 04:04:50 pm »
I think I'm gonna look at replacing the chain ten. Garyb  did you do yours yourself? I'm pretty handy with stuff, just takes me a while but I'm sure it's bound to save me a fair chunk on labour if I do it. Any recommendations on cam chains and where to get them?

Yeah I did mine myself to save on costs as I was on a tight budget.

Re: getting a chain, you can try some of the suppliers mentioned on here by the guys like Wemoto or AJ Sutton, they didn't have any in stock when I tried but may have some in by now.

In the end I got one from John at JAWS motorcycles.

Definetely sounds like the camchain to me also. I only replaced mine about a week ago, so the sound is very familiar to me.
Mine had 34k Miles on it and sounded exactly the same as yours does and was there regardless of whether the bike was cold or warm.
All is quiet now with the new chain installed.
Good luck with getting it sorted - plenty of helpful advice available round these parts if you intend to do yourself. Make sure you check the condition of CCT first though.

Make sure you get bulbs that are plastic friendly otherwise your lenses will just discolour and make things even worse!

Jeez I never knew about this - that must be what's wrong with mine, when I got the bike, apart from noticing the lights were crap the lenses seem to be a sort of brownish tint presumably from the wrong bulbs in use by the previous owner.

Any recommendations for the correct type to use?

Cheers Gar

Osram Nightbreaker Plus, or if you're feeling a bit flush Philips X-Treme Power  :b

Both plastic lens friendly.  :smokin

Nice one - thank you kind sir!

FZS600 Fazer / Re: riveting a cam chain
« on: 17 August 2013, 12:17:10 pm »
I just done mine last week and had a few issues with it, but I got there in the end thanks to some help from folks on here.

This may not be the most efficient or right way to do this, but it worked just fine for me.

Once I had the chain new in and ready to install the rivet link, I held the chain held in place with a clamp (rubber tooth type) as it draped over the edge of the engine.

Then using my hands (note this is a fiddly process and needs the dexterity of a gynacologist) I took both ends of the chain and folded back the open links on each side of the chain to get them out of the way, except the last links, the bottom ones in this case.

I pushed the rivet link through the bottom links but only pushed the rivets through until flush. Then I installed the first link plate and again pushed the link rivets through until flush. Then I pivoted round and into place the next open link on each side of the chain and pushed the rivets through until flush. Repeated this process for the next link until I was ready to put the top link plate in place.

Placed the top link into place and gently squeezed into place with a pliers over each rivet. This will allow the plate to be pressed on but only as far as the rivets come flush to the new plate. In order to get them through far enough to protrude and allow them to be peened over, I placed a small nut on the top plate over the rivet and squeezed with a pliers.

Did this with each rivet one at at time and press down in small increments to allow the plate to go on evenly and not to tight, I kept checking the width as I progressed as compared to existing link on the chain. Take care with the last pinch as you don't want to go to far and get a tight link as I did the first time.

Once I was happy with it, I got ready to peen the rivets. I checked the diameter of the rivet with the vernier, I then held a small lump hammer in one hand (and resting on my knee!) then using a small ball ended hammer and peened over the ends of each rivet.

A couple of small taps at a time works well, don't go too heavy handed, it's easy to over do it. Checked with the vernier again and once happy it was the same as the other rivets on the chain it was job done.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Got the engine connected back up after the removal for the new camchain, she started first time and is lovely and quiet now!

I am delighted with it and that I was able to do it myself, roll on the weekend and a nice ride out!
