A Major Guitar Success!

Been studying at the Rory Gallagher school of rock guitar and have so far sussed "Bought and Sold", and tonight got a handle on "Country Mile", including his slide in standard tuning method 

Also started to figure out some of his ragtime stuff for acoustic guitar, but needs more work.

Hmmm, Ralph McTell...sure I've either heard some his, or more likely someone doing covers of his stuff. Quite possibly the aforementioned Mr. Gallagher. Name a couple of tunes?

Jam sessions here are unfortunately unlikely, but when I'm finally relocated, you'd be welcome to visit up north. My playing is no longer rusty - bloody well shouldn't be, the amount of time I've been putting into it!

No, I'm guessing most folks will be at work today, while I'll be messing about on the git-fiddles

And now just ordered x4 dvds: x2 Rory Gallagher live performances, and x2 Joe Bonamassa live performances - getting serious now! 

And bought "Transcribe!" so I can slow stuff down and analyse it. A helpful tool, but only to be used as a last resort, as I reckon you learn more by transcribing purely by listening to the originals as performed. But useful for those tricky bits you just can't figure, or really fast stuff.

Ralph does some technical stuff - but he's less known for it. At least "Streets of London" is the thing people know him for.

He's fantastic live too.

Nope, not even close. You'll have to do better than that Christo. Try Rory's "Barley & Grape Rag", or his version of "Rag Mama Rag" from the Rockpalast dvd. Or for some real technical stuff, Doc Watson, or Brad 'Buster' Jones doing "Black Mountain Rag". And before exupnut says anything, Tommy Emmanuel does the odd ragtime number. You don't get much more technical on an acoustic guitar than him.

I think I need a Telecaster with a high action and heavy gauge strings for slide playing. Wonder if me bruv would notice if his went missing

Although if I want to hear that performed, I just go see my mate Will Killeen play. He does a blinding version of that one.

I've just been watching some Rory Gallagher and Joe Bonamassa live dvds, and frankly I think Rory blows even Joe into the weeds. You can watch as many performances of the same song from Rory as you like, and he'll never do it exactly the same way twice. A master at improvisation. Joe on the other hand, seems to have all his performances orchestrated from start to finish; lacks imagination for live performance if you like.

Both of course are better players than I'm ever likely to be, but if you asked me who's style I'd like to influence me more, I'd say Rory every time

I think  rory cut his teeth in the irish show band tradition so had to be versatile.

Saw Rory a few times back in the day ..awesome
saw Joe a few times as well but will never be as good as Rory
Ralph is very good at what he does but very different from the above
